Compare And Contrast Jonathan Mooney And David Cole
Jonathan Mooney and David Cole really touched me in their book, Learning Outside the Lines. Growing up, I had a lot of trouble in school. My teachers told my parents that I would never be a great learner, and it seemed that I could never get the hang of anything academically. The reason behind this was because I could hardly stay on topic or sit still for more than 5 minutes. In the elementary public school system, I was placed in every academic support system I could be, and though it helped some, I still struggled immensely. It did not take long for me to notice my teacher’s frustration, and soon I began to think something was wrong with me. Though my parents took me out of the pubic system and placed me in private schools, I still seemed

Growing up reading and writing has always been a part of my life; you could always catch my mom sitting in her chair with a book by her favorite author in her hand. I’ll always remember the day that she read a play to me, she was never into theatre as a kid but she read it as if she had been on Broadway. I think that is where my love for reading as well as theatre first started, just watching her so focused and completely into a book. It always amazed me and to this day it still does. I’ve also had some amazing teachers throughout my school years. Have you ever had those teachers who would do anything in the world for you? The teachers who just made you so excited to learn? I know that I have a few; they are the ones that you could never forget. From my English teachers to my theatre teachers, they have all made a difference in my life. I know that it sounds crazy that theatre ties in with all of this, but it does in so many ways.…

The main question that Thomas S. Dee and Brian Jacob are investigating is whether or not the No Child Left Behind Act has effected student achievement, as indicated in standardized test scores. They state that empirical research on the No Child Left Behind Act is sparse; however, researchers have attempted to identify national patterns regarding student achievement and the No Child Left Behind Act. Nonetheless, each study has reached a significantly different conclusion. Dee and Jacob attribute these findings to the fact that these studies have lacked a legitimate control group, and therefore are unable to differentiate between the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act and miscellaneous factors (Dee & Jacob 2011). Thus, Dee and Jacob…

Samson and Casey were two foolish men who made bad decisions. God gave Samson strength beyond human ability as long as he followed Gods rules, but Samson could not put aside his arrogance and lust in order to keep his gift. So God took his gift away and in the end Samson paid with his life. Casey was talented at baseball but his pride led him to miss a great opportunity which made people revaluate how great he actually was. They were both over confident which lead to their downfall. Solomon warned men about this very sin because he knew what damage it could do. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) The most disappointing component of both their actions was the fact that they had others depending on them. If their pride had not gotten in the way then they could have accomplished something great. They let people down and by their actions, displayed cowardice.…

Education is something so sacred to some people but there are many people that take it for granted as well. "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" by Sherman Alexie and "Learning to Read and Write" by Fredrick Douglass, is similar in many ways. Both of these men were so eager to learn when in the meantime so many people that do have the opportunity are so clueless. People are so clueless that there were others, and still are, that wish they were in a position to easily learn. Both of these men were minorities and grew up many years ago where learning was unusual. In their situation it was also forbidden in some ways. Although it was tough for both of them, they both felt compelled to take learning into their own hands. Alexie refused to be like others and Douglass did as well. Both of these men went through an astonishing experience to discover what they did. Not only did they both learn that education is something pleasurable, but they learned that it was difficult.…

In the beginning of civilization in North America, people believed in witchcraft and things out of the ordinary. Witchcraft means “the practice of, and belief in, magical skills and abilities that are able to be exercised by individuals and certain social groups”. Because of Witchcraft, the people of Salem decided to come up with a way to find out if someone was a witch. The Salem Witch Trials were if you were claimed to be a witch by another person in the community, you shall go through a trial. The Trial was if you sunk to the bottom of the river or a barrel with rocks attached to your body, then you were not a witch. But, if you floated, then you were officially a witch and you were to be hung as soon as possible. During the same time as the witch trials, a man by the name of Jonathan Edwards delivers a sermon that last for hours in a church that is locked up where people can’t leave. Before technology and social media, no one really knew the right way of doing things, so they came up with crazy ways of dealing with situations. From Edwards’ sermon to The Salem Witch Trials, these people were out of their minds.…

During my early years of education, school was a bit more challenging for me than the average student. My teachers never understood my narrow-mindedness when it came to learning. I was great when I was given a month’s worth of work to do and left to my own devices, but when they made me participate in the class itself, I never did as well. I was given low grades because of this, and my father would hit me more. By the time I got into middle school, my parents had gotten a divorce and my mom had been remarried for seven years. It didn’t make things better. I worked harder and harder, and got better and better grades. And more and more bruises.…

My failures taught me that sometimes we have to give up friend, family, and my spare times to work on homework and study extra for all of my class.I came home everyday to look at my notes and study with my sister for hours until I was sure I knew what I was doing. I learned that having a disability doesn’t make me any less smarter than other people. Soon after, I learned how to speak, write and read English. because of all of the effort I put into learning soon after, I was mastering all of my class. Getting Student of the Month three times in a row, most outstanding student, as well as most improved student. I liked earning all of this awards because it told me that my hard work did pay off. Living in a single parent home affected my ability to perform well in school. My mother barely finished school. She was not highly educated. When I was younger and needed help with my homework, she was unable to assist me. This motivated me and made me even eager to learn. I started catching on to things really quick by listening and doing a lot of hands on activities. This is when I realized I was more of a hands on person. I went to several different grade schools and two different high schools due to unstable living arrangements. This made it even harder for me to stay focused and catch on. Every school learning style was different. Every time I became comfortable in my environment and familiar with my teachers we would relocate. This confused…

I remember on case in point where my social studies teacher saw something in the way that I learned in a totally different manner compared to the other students. She pulled me aside one day and asked me to set up a meeting with my parents so they could discuss my level of critical thinking. Truthfully, coming from a 5th grade I thought I was in trouble or I was going to be put in a lower level class for students that were late blossomers. Fortunately she wanted to discuss putting me in a curriculum that would accelerate my style of learning much further by enrolling me in a class with higher level students.…

I grew up in a low-income home with parents that didn’t go to college, and where education was not stressed or valued. This is why I had no passion to read or learn. Growing up I didn’t care about school and would rather hang out with my friends and play basketball with them at the park. I would have trouble focusing while reading in class, which led to me failing tests. Most of the time I would be waiting for the bell to ring for lunch so I can go play basketball in the gym. After middle school I started high school and tried out for the basketball team during the summer and made the team.…
