Narrative Essay
College Writing I

My name is Angela S. Baez, and you can call me Angela. I am from the Dominican Republic. In this essay I would like to tell you a story about my experience in coming to the USA. I was very happy when I found out my daughter and I received full residency status from the USA. We would be moving to New York City Sometimes, I felt nervous, because it was my first time to go to another country, which used a different language than my country. I also had to leave my family for a long time. However, I tried to keep strong and calm. I knew it was a good choice to move to the U.S.
We departed from my hometown (Montecristi) to Santo Domingo on April 12, 1993 at 7:00 a.m. I went by and got there four hours later. In the airport, we went to the American Airlines counter and checked in for my daughter and me. We went through security. It was really empty because it was very early. After that we went to our gate. We walked around the airport and took a seat to wait for a while. I took my daughter to a cafeteria to eat some food and a soda. We were very early so we had time to walk. Two hours later, we went back to the gate to board the plane. I am sure that my daughter had no idea what was going on, and luckily she was a very quiet child, so I was not nervous.
On the plane, I found our seats and sat down and buckled our seat belts. I had never been on a plane before. When I realized that in a few moment we were going to be on the air, I was nervous. But I had to look calm, for my daughter, and for everyone else. The pilot introduced himself and said that the flight from Santo Domingo to New York was going to take 4 hours.
The flight attendants stood at the front of the isles and demonstrated the safety precautions as the plane began to get speed.
I began to pray, because that’s what I do when I get nervous. When the plane took off, I was relieved, that nothing bad happened. Soon after that my daughter

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

I was so scared about going on my first plane ride. It was August 13, 2014. Last night I stayed awake the entire night thinking about a plane crash. In the morning I was about close to having a fever because of the sweat I had. If we made it to Salt Lake City, alive I would be happy. I felt really bad for my dad because we couldn’t afford a ticket for a trip to Salt Lake City and back. So my mom and I went on 1 in a lifetime around close to the Midwest. We went from Salt Lake City, Utah to Idaho, to Yellowstone, Wyoming to Montana to South Dakota and saw the following presidents heads, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Roosevelt. We went to the battle of Black Hills, then we went to the Snake river. Then, we left for…

There I was, holding onto my suitcase, standing in the airport about to board my plane. I was fifteen years old, going into my sophomore year of high school, and I was going to Italy for ten days with my best friend and a tour group from his school. For months, we had been counting down the days until we leave. The day was finally here and everyone around was full of excitement. Everyone else had been on planes multiple times in their lives. As for me, I had never been on an airplane before and had no idea what to expect about this upcoming eight hour plane ride. This was going to be the first time I was ever away from home. The thought of being away from my family for this long, was a little intimidating to me. I always had the company and support of my family. I never traveled anywhere on my own before. It was not until we were waiting at this point, just minutes away from boarding the plane, that I realized how nervous I actually was.…

After fending off the crowd of travelers, my tickets was collected and I sat back and relaxed during a long but comfortable flight to London. I was thinking how my father was going to react after he found out that I wasn’t coming home, but London. Maybe he would want to kill me. However, that thought was short-lived because when I arrived at Heathrow Airport I was very excited to catch up with my cousin who met me at the arrivals area. Catching the underground (train stop) back to their apartment, we had plenty of time to catch up and share some funny stories.…

When I arrived here in the United States, it felt like falling into a roaring stream without any swimming skills. Dog paddling, panting, and swallowing gallons on the way, learned to keep myself afloat and gradually gained experience. I learned so many things and my knowledge about the world expanded widely. Back in the Philippines, I was a laidback person and didn’t care about anything but to have fun with my friends. But when I moved here, things turned upside down. I became more focused on my goals and reached for what I desire to pursue in my life. Moving to this country caused me to grow, mature, and made me into a better person. There were many obstacles and challenges that I had to surmount when I first came here. It all started out when my father had a call from his boss that he had to travel abroad to Italy to finish some work that the company assigned him to do. My father decided that he would take the whole family with him to see and feel the European life that Italy had in store. I wasn't hyped about it at first, I thought it would be a disaster, I felt that we wouldn't fit in. In the end I was convinced that it would be a nice change to visit and explore the very first European city that I would go for a trip to. When we arrived at the airport and were going to board the plane, I was surprised that there were tourists from everywhere around the world! Tourists which vary from the far Eastern-asian continent to the the very western part of africa. The airplane was striped Red and White and was spectacularly big. The inside was very advanced too, almost every seat had a television linked to it to watch movies! I was glad then that I would be occupied throughout the whole flight and not sleep out of boredom.…

    I Believe I Can Fly

I remember my first time flying on an airplane. My father, brother and I all flew down from Fairbanks, Alaska to Phoenix, Arizona on the Christmas of 1990 to see the Grand Canyon. This was our little vacation while my mom was in Hawaii. It was my first time flying and I was so scared during takeoff that I did not even make a sound. My brother gave me the window seat since it was my first time and he had flown before. My face was glued to the window for the entire four and a half hour flight. I had never seen a view from such a height. At the age of five this experience was absolutely mind blowing for me. I was so excited once we landed at the airport that I remember running up to the nearest ashtray and yelling to my dad “Look dad, they have dirt here!” I am sure that was a little embarrassing for him but it did not faze me at all. I was from Alaska and had not seen dirt in months. I was so excited by everything around me; the amount of people, the sheer size of the airport, and even how big the bathrooms were. I remember waiting for our luggage to come out and my dad having to yell at me because all I wanted to do was ride around on the carriage that brought the luggage to us from behind the rubber flaps. I was hooked from that moment.…
