Letter:
Dear Patrick,
I hope this letter reaches you well and in time. It’s Robert writing to like I promised when I reached the great lands of the United States of America. Patrick I’ll tell you one thing and that would be how difficult the ride was to the great land. There was a lady that got sick on the boat and in order to keep us all safe from her the captain had to let her off in the middle of the sea! It was very unexpected but I stayed tough with my lucky Irish blood and made it here. I do miss Ireland very much and wish I could be back there but I know if I want to get rich I have to push myself.
How has it been at home so far Patrick? I know my family is happy that we were able to escape from the famine. I hope that the potatoes start to grow because I would love to hear good news from you very soon. Though Patrick if you and your family do decide to move you should beware that my trip wasn't that easy like I explained before of the the sickness but that’s not the only thing that may haunt your trip. The countless hours of sitting and looking at the dirty floors can haunt your mind and may lead to going insane. But I was so happy when we finally arrived it was the greatest sight I have ever seen! There were so many people I couldn’t believe my eyes how much immigrants like me were out there. When I arrived I was questioned on my family and my beliefs. Thankfully the official let me through to the next point in which I got checked on by a doctor. As you know my Irish blood runs through me I guess because I seem never to get sick so I finally joined my family in the streets of New York where my dreams were being made.
Life right now in America is tough but I enjoy every minute of it because I know I am lucky to working and getting allowed to be in such a great country. Everyday I wake up and start my day by walking to the factory. The factory is a 15 minute walk from the Irish community we settled in. Our house isn’t that great but it will do because we know that as we strive for more great opportunities will come. Though a few things that don’t help me as I struggle is that I have found out that all of us immigrants get paid less for the jobs that we do. I already work the most dangerous part of the factory and the most hours but I seem to get paid the least just because I’m an immigrant. Patrick I hope all is good and that you write back to me as soon as you get this! Please be safe and tell your family I say hello. I hope you move here to America so that I can see you again.

“Crossing Border” is a documentary about four Moroccan and four American university students traveling together through Morocco and, in the process of discovering “the other,” they end up discovering themselves as well. Watching this documentary open my mind of the people around me and how people do judge other people based on their beliefs and background without even knowing who they are, and to be honest I used to be one those people as well.
