College Admissions Essay: Why I Deserve A Scholarship
As I am sitting at my kitchen table typing this and as I am typing and thinking of why exactly I deserve this scholarship, as I am erasing and typing, my mother keeps looking at me. As I ask her why she is looking at me and asking so many questions about my text. I realized why she was asking so many questing about what I was doing or why it is that I was focusing so hard on an essay. She didn't understand because growing up she was not given this opportunity or for that matter any hope of education. I am a junior who is going to Kansas City Kansas Community college studying to receive my CNA license. My counselors and peers told me to not try because only seniors make it into the program. The main reason I returned to school is to be able to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from college. My mother raised my two sisters and me as a single parent with very limited resources. I barely ever saw her due to that fact that she had to work at two different jobs. She wasn’t the most affectionate mother but showed her love through actions rather than words. Very seldom did we have deep conversations but one conversation that stands out in my mind is when she said to me “Fernando, I am sorry I can’t provide the same things your friends have. I didn’t even have the opportunity to continue my education. I only went to school up to 6th grade because my mother forced me to work or I would have to leave the house. I want you to have a better future. That is why I brought you all to the…

I don’t know if I feel that saying that I deserve this scholarship is the right thing to say, but going to Japan has been a goal of mine ever since I can remember. My grandfather was the one who really got me interested in Japan. He would always tell me stories about the culture, people, the little bits of language that he picked up, and the time that he spent there. My grandfather would have loved me going to Japan and would have supported me whole heartedly. I want to go to Japan not only to see what he saw, but also to improve the little that I know and improve myself.…

I am determined to go to college even if there are some setbacks that make harder for me to do so. For example, when I was in 10th grade I found out that I had scoliosis, and the only way that I would be able to treat it was through surgery. At the time that I had found this out, I had already planned out my sophomore year; I was going to take 2 AP classes and 2 math courses above my grade level. At the time I truly believed that I was going to be able to go through the surgery, take all my classes, and very least get decent grades in all my classes, including my AP classes. However, that semester ended up being my worst.…

I’m just starting my 4th semester majoring in Political Science with a minor in History. My grades are decent and studying is difficult. Last semester, I went to campus each day with a Sherpa. Because I broke the femur that houses my internal prosthetic leg last summer I could not drive for almost 6 months. I couldn’t even carry a simply backpack. So, my Sherpa was my mother. Due to finances it was more prudent for her to quit work and Sherpa me around. You’d think it would be awkward having your Mom go to college with you, but it wasn’t. It was rather interesting to spend 6 hours a day with her on a college campus. I wanted to go to school and there was no other…

I come from a family of six with only one parent who works as a painter. His income is just enough to pay for our food, bills, rent, and personal needs. Hence, I am aware that my parents won’t have enough to pay for my tuition or any expenses in college. Considering attending Houston Baptist University, a private college, I know it will be very expensive. For this reason I think about and stress over about how I will cover payments for college repeatedly. Out of all the reasons I wouldn’t be able to attend college, I don’t want money to be the reason why I won’t be able to pursue my degree.…

I believe in opportunity. The definition of opportunity is something that you want to do, have the chance to do, or the possibility·of achieving something. When I was younger, I lived in a heavily populated town: Laredo, Texas. At the time, I was an eighth grader trying to make my mom proud by getting good grades in my classes. Seeing my mom happy was the greatest feeling in the world. My father, on the other hand, started to disappear on us. I found out that my dad had a drug problem, and my mom was filing for a divorce. I did not want my mom getting a divorce, but I knew she would be happier. My parents splitting up killed me, but it was best for my mother and me. Thinking about the divorce now, it was probably the best thing that has ever happened to me, because it offered me one thing: opportunity.…

For most of my adult life, I have struggled to define success -success, in the sense, that I have never been where I wanted to be. I grew up in a small one-bedroom apartment in East Los Angeles where we struggled to pay the monthly rent of $500. My grandmother had been renting this apartment for 30 years. My mother and her four siblings were raised in this apartment. None of my grandmother’s children graduated from high school. Instead, they drove trucks for a living, joined the armed services or went to prison. This would make graduating from high school and attending college very difficult for me.…
