Celebration of Life
The bay windows placed behind my bed let in unforgivable beams of sunlight nearly every morning around 7 A.M. For over a month I had been throwing my blankets over my head cursing the fact that I kept forgetting to buy curtains. I was almost used to waking up so early, but on the 9th of September, 2009, the sun was letting me sleep. When I finally woke up, I felt different, and my dog hadn't come to lick my face when I called her name. Outside, it was cold, dark, and wet. I could tell today was going to be one of those days. Even though I wasn't looking forward to my day I found the strength to roll out of bed. Especially because I was worried my dog Daisy was causing trouble. Sure enough I had found her whimpering in the corner because she couldn't get a bag of crumbled Doritos open. She had already demolished a half eaten roast beef sandwich from Arby's, and what I believed to be the remains of a rotten banana peel. I cleaned up her mess and quickly grabbed her leash to see if I could exhaust her on a walk. After a half hour spent in the rain I realized I forgot my keys and didn't have my cell phone. At the time I was living on the third floor, and the only window that I could access was up an old rusted fire escape. Thankfully, my window was unlocked and easily opened. It felt like my day couldn't get any worse. So, I decided to waste it by watching TV. As soon as I made myself comfortable, a loud annoying sound began chiming every minute on the dot. I unhappily got up and went to find my phone. It had several missed calls from my best friend Rachill, and a text reading, “CALL ME ASAP. VERY VERY IMPORATANT!” My day had just gotten worse; I knew something was wrong. When I called her back, my heart was pounding, my hands were sweating, and I was bracing myself for the worst. Her voice answered with a very faint, “Hello.” The words, “What's going on?” flew out of my mouth. She informed me that our good friend from high school, Collin

In the wee hours of the morning my life is the embodiment of a living, breathing dichotomy. Awakening with a wry little smile on my face, I knew I had dreamed of the river, big brown trout, and sweet 3wt bamboo rods. My body screams – “Where’s the coffee”, while my brain questions the sanity of getting up this early on a Saturday. Oblivious to the cacophony, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Betraying logic, they forewarn that this pre-dawn moment was the premonition of a great day ahead.…

The sun was shining through my tent's window at the Ardeche. I could hear the birds chirping, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. It was a school trip, and today, we were going caving. I met up with my group, and we prepared our caving equipment, and we were briefed about secuirity. We had torn, dirty second-hand waterproof overalls, Helmets and Head…

I had to rush to the San Bernardino Valley College library to print out my research paper. Then I was late to my pharmacology class. My front loader Maytag washer machine just decided to break down on me early in the morning. I was on my second load of dark clothes, when I tried to turn the washer machine on. The machine kept saying error. I had 5 other loads to wash and I had asked my mother-in-law, if I could go wash at her house. My mother-in-law was washing and I had to wait until she was done. I didn't get home til 9P.M. and still had to do my trigonometry homework. Next, inanimate objects have their way of getting lost. My direct tv control remote always ends up in weird places. Sundays are game day. It was the first football game of the season and my favorite team Dallas Cowboys were playing at 1:00P.M. It was 15 minutes til the game and the televisions was on the Disney junior channel. I couldn’t find the remote control. Therefore, I had to download the peel remote on my phone in order to change the channel. I notice there was something on the top of my Honda Accord, it was the direct tv…

I walked softly up a brightly lighten path up the mountain, the weather was harsh; however I walked on a protected path leading high up in the Denali. What appeared ahead stood radiant colors raining from the sky blues, purples, yellows and green poured deep into the earth. As I stare in awe the moon grew brighter and beamed white light down onto a shadow that appeared in the shadow of the northern lights. As I began to walk towards this mysterious shadow my eyes focused in closer. As I stood there taking in the full image of this miraculous view, I was awaken by the sound of rain trickling on the window. I sneak quietly out of bed and make it into the kitchen to begin baking some fresh blueberry muffins. Before I could taste the muffins, “splash!”…

As I sit outside my porch gleaming at the clear blue sky, the sun peeking through the clouds down on my face. I take a long breath, taking in the morning breeze and letting it out. Today will be different, it will be a new beginning. I hear the birds chirping and the sun has risen. It's time. I run back inside my house grab the keys and head straight to the front door. I take a deep breath again telling the voices in my head that today will be different. I stroll down the road as I rehash what this day was one year ago. A deadly disaster, a heart throbbing story that I never want to be reminded of. I ambled past a group of people down the street, I hear their words turning into whispers and their ferocious eyes looking at me. The whispers are…

My heavy eyes ached as I closed them listening to music. I was nearly asleep when the song I was listening to paused and my familiar message tone sounded through my headphones. I picked up my phone just as the song faded back in, my eyes blurred as they adjusted to the light of my phone screen but the only thing I could see was Josie’s name. I sat up in shock and re-read the sender name a few times before believing it. I opened the message and started reading. ‘I’ve missed you so much Jacob, this is so hard and everything I do reminds me of you, I really want to see you again.’ I stared at it for a moment in shock before a huge wave of emotion came over me. I kept reading it over and over thinking I must be in a dream. I didn’t know what to do or say. My mind was soon crowded with thoughts and suddenly I felt wide awake. Every day that passed I thought how I wished I was good enough to be with her, because in reality I wasn’t over Josie and I really missed what we had. When I did reply I wrote ‘I need you in my life Josie, I can’t bear not having you next to me anymore, I miss your company and want to see you’ I pressed send and anxiously waited for a reply. I heard another buzz so I picked up my phone. ‘Meet me at Subway at 12’ she said.…

It is a beautiful day in Sacramento, California and I am just getting lunch at “Mrs. Castillo’s home for Orphans” while I was eating string cheese and carrots with my best friend Elijah, my other friend Allie ran into the cafeteria and said “Hey! Samara! I have something for you, from Mrs. Castillo! After she was done sprinting, she handed me a note that said “Mrs. Castillo’s office, and I looked at the bottom and I saw something circled… and it said NOW!!! In all capitals. I knew that I did something wrong, I just knew it! I was so nervous I felt like I was going to throw up. When I woke up, I was in the hospital again with my parents around me. “How are you darling?” the doctor asked. “I’m okay, can I go home now? I asked the doctor. “The stress caused her to faint. Her condition is getting worse and worse everyday. If we’re not gonna start her chemo therapy right now, we don’t know how long she can stay. Her body is getting weak.” the doctor said to my parents. The doctor left then my mom hold my hands, “I’m truly sorry about what happened Hailey. I want to give you a normal life. I want you to have fun without worrying about your health.” she apologized. “We’re going to Louisiana next week for your chemo therapy.” she added. “But mom how ‘bout my life here? How ‘bout my graduation? My friends? How ‘bout Alicia?…

“Patient coming through, move out of the way!!”, the doctor screaming. My hands held tightly onto hers, never wanting to let go. I barely said any of my words as tears streamed down my face and said, “Promise me to never leave me alone, I have something special I want to give you.” As we got near the emergency room, the doctor told me to wait outside. I slowly let go of her hand and waited patiently. Moments later, I see the nurse coming out, I got up and ran up to her to ask her what happened and she replied, “The patient lost a lot of blood, so we need to get more packets of blood..” and she left. Thoughts running through my head, thinking everything was going to be ok but at the same time thinking that it was not going to be okay. I clap my hands together and prayed that everything will be okay. Memories started to come back to me from when we first met and how we always fought because our parents never accepted us since we were different. I saw the red light turn off and I knew…

In the night’s high tides I look out for boats that are out in the ocean with my oversized flashlight up on the highest point in the lighthouse. “Is anyone out there!?” I yell. I end up finding no response. All that I can hear is the waves crashing onto the rocks. But then for an inexplicable reason, everything feels slower, colder… It’s snowing! I think to myself. I run down the stairs of the lighthouse and What do I see? I see the snow piled on the grass like solid clouds clumped on the green world. I hear the moose, just waking up, and already running around. I drive back home and I see frost stuck on people's houses like sugar stuck on a wooden ladle. Cold, I resumed my trip home. I seem to run into a moose,…

I awoke to the sounds of birds singing, and the light shining through the window of my bedroom. I opened my eyes and stretched my pale arms towards the ceiling. As I put on my slippers, I thought to myself, “today is going to be a good day.” And went downstairs to get breakfast. I hummed to the tune of one of the many songs I had heard on the radio as I made myself a bowl of Frosted Flakes.…

Celebration of Discipline, by Richard J. Foster, is a comprehensive guide to spiritual disciplines. In this book, Foster addresses twelve main ones (meditation, prayer, fasting, study, simplicity, solitude, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance, and celebration), and shows how we can implement them in our lives. It is only through spiritual practices that we can move from superficial living into deeper lives. To balance our inward and outward lives and overcome our sin, we must first receive the inner righteousness which is a grace given from God. When we allow the Disciplines into daily practices, they allow God to come inside and bring an abundance of God into our lives. Overall, Celebration of Discipline is a true book every Christian ought to read. After having read this book, I am motivated to practice the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting. According to Foster, prayer is very important because it takes us into perpetual communion with the Father and it is the central avenue for personal examination and change. I chose prayer because prayer was such a big part of my life and it brings positive outpourings in my life. Constant prayer allows me to get closer to God and love the people around me more. Without prayer, I have less tolerance for those I find hard to love, more concern with earthly things, feelings of disconnect with God that I love. In my life, I have never practiced fasting because of my health issues and disbelief in its power. However, Foster encourages me to pursue it as it can bring spiritual breakthroughs that will not happen in any other way. Focusing on those two disciplines, I hope that God can bring spiritual transformation in my life and help me find the true path to spiritual growth. Y, dXiJ(x( I_TS 1EZBmU/xYy5g/GMGeD3Vqq8K)fw9…

I looked down the hallway and around the corner I could see the blinding bright light of the day reflecting of the glass. I was jumpy, finally able to make it out! Once that was all done and the truck was locked and loaded us as a family would head to TGI Fridays to celebrate my great grandmother’s birthday as we did every year since her passing.
