To maintain a commitment to professionalism
Functional Area #13: Professionalism As a professional I attend regular trainings both in and out of work. Some training is provided for me by my employer, while others I seek out on my own. In June I attended training for 2 weeks before children started attending class. These trainings focused on areas such as health, routines and transitions, environments, goals/objectives and school readiness. One way I apply these trainings is by setting a routine in the classroom and remembering to abide by it, while allowing some flexibility as the children need it. It is important to keep a routine so that the children know what to expect. A routine helps children to stay focused

    In my classroom I keep my children healthy by monitoring their health. One of my first priorities is to know which child has any food allergies. I believe that the children need to eat a variety of healthy food. Our center is associated with the USDA Food Program and for this reason we serve lots of fruits and vegetables.     While observing the child you should watch the children, through play. Through observation we can have a better understanding of there likes and dislikes, you can also find out there interetests, this can be used while planning and providing a lesson based around there age and stage. For example if a child likes peppa pig you can provide a lesson which includes something to do with Peppa pig, but still following the curriculum. This is helpful as you grab there attention and they will be more willing to do the work as its something they enjoy. We can figure out what strategies work for the children, from this we can attain there goals. While observing we can then figure out what skills there children need to practice on, this will help there development and help them to reach there full potential. While observing the child we can begin to understand them and there personalities. For example a child might be reserves and does not like taking risks. This can help you plan and provide the child a lesson in which they will enjoy more. You need to consider there developmental level, for example if a child is playing with a ball she will throw it either very hard or not at all but she does not vary the throw along a continuum of very hard, hard and soft. From this you can figure out how far along she is in her development stage.…

    To ensure a well-run, purposeful program that is responsive to participant needs, there are many standards I exercise within my classroom. My teaching practices include following a pre-set calendar populated with planned activities. It is important to have a plan for each day so that we can transition the children easily from one event to another. Children react better to their schedule when they know what to expect and have a sense of control over their routine. I also believe it is important for the families to know what to expect each day. As an early childhood educator, I have to maintain a positive and productive relationship with the families that come into my preschool. Parents entrust me with their children all day and, I make the parents and families feel as much a part of our classroom and a part of their child’s development.     One strategy that can be implemented in any classroom, at any grade level, is structure. Having a sense of structure helps those students who need routine. Having a set routine helps all students know what they should be doing. Implementing a classroom structure does not have to equal a rigid routine, however. By dividing class time into increments helps. For example, in a 45-minute class, there can be divided times: 5 minutes for warm-up, 20 minutes for instruction, 10 minutes for groups or small groups, and 10 minutes for individual work. The type of instruction or activity does not have to be the same every day, but knowing what is to be expected is beneficial.     Well firstly, I decided to focus the first month of school, to getting students adjusted to my classroom routines. I noticed that when students knew what to expect, I was able to spend less time on classroom management and more time on instruction. Each day, students would walk in, and on the SmartBoard, I would have the Bell Ringer up and a countdown displayed on the same slide. Most of my Bell Ringers, incorporated some sort of image that would connect to that day’s lesson (for an example, if the focus was on characterizing Lady Macbeth, I would have an image of how Lady Macbeth has been depicted in the media). I would also have up on the board, the Agenda and Aim for that day. This way students would know that after sharing out their Bell Ringer (whether it be in pairs, groups of three, or as a class), they would then engage in whatever activity was listed. Lastly, every lesson ended with an Exit Slip, which students knew would be answering the Aim in RATES format [restate question into topic sentence, answer the question, provide textual evidence (with proper citation), expand on the textual evidence, sum up the paragraph].
