This past year, I was given one of the most important leadership positions of my life: a Junior Marshal for the 2016 East Rowan Graduation. Being a Junior Marshal is a lot of responsibility; you have to be composed, organized, and flexible to help out with senior activities leading up to their graduation. Although it is the seniors’ day when they graduate, Junior Marshals have a lot to do with the actual process: we set up and decorate, lead them to their seats, show them the layout of how they are to walk when they get their diplomas, and so much more. Before this experience, I had actually never even heard of a Junior Marshal and I had been in high school for three years.…

implementation of any program or project. As imperative as it is to lay a solid foundation through mission, goals, and objectives, it is equally as important to have a way to define success or failure through use of appropriate tools, accurate reporting, and proper evaluation techniques. Deciding whether to use a process evaluation format or outcome evaluation can be challenging, but often a coordinated system is most telling. The main objective of any evaluation technique is to provide the state of the agency and how well or poorly their programs are working, what may need to be changed, and how well they continue to meet their mission, goals and objectives. The Santa Rosa Philharmonic Youth Symphony (SRPYS) is an organization which prides itself on the development and achievements of young people; primarily in music education and excellence, but also leadership and scholarship. The community strongly supports the teaching and mentorship that this organization provides the youth of its area; recognizing that without music, life becomes dull. Discipline is one of the primary drivers of most musicians and SRPYS encourages hard work, challenging mastership of musical talents, and performances of exceptional quality. Auditions are held each year in June for qualified candidates, but with the loss of music programs in elementary and middle schools they realize that some type of program needs to be developed to serve that group of students. The mission, goals, and objectives that are presented in the scenario are fairly generalized. Without an adequate, detailed description of how the program will be administrated and implemented, it is nearly impossible to perform a process evaluation.…

Last summer, I endeavored a life changing experience. American Legion Buckeye Boys State is a leadership program. It is the best Boys State program in the nation. On top of this, it is among the top programs for leadership, growth, and is a meeting of the greatest minds of Ohio, and by proxy, of the nation. But it’s so much more than that. From Day One, the minute you step off the bus, it instantly becomes an incredible experience. Everyone, people who have never even met before, are shaking everyone else’s hands, introducing themselves, and campaigning for positions before anyone has even dropped their luggage off. It was breathtaking, truly, and it made me realize that I too had to step up. Naturally, I did just that. I started meeting people,…

As quite the introvert, I never would have imagined myself as the secretary of such a renowned organization: the National Honor Society. However, I had decided to take on the challenge of running for board, requiring me to give a speech to our 500+ NHS members. My strengths did not lie in public speaking or persuasion like the other candidates. Instead, my speech involved me singing Mulan’s “Be a Man,” using ingenuity and humor to win over opinions. I believe that pushing yourself into an unfamiliar situation is the best way to learn and grow, as this approach demands problem solving and innovative thinking. NHS has pushed me to be more outgoing and active in the community by giving me the privilege of leadership, and I would definitely serve…

This year I decided to interview Mrs. Jackie Hammers, the choral director of our Jr. High School. I have a love for music and she was a very inspirational teacher when I was younger, so I felt the need to ask her about her job. Mrs. Hammers is like I said a music teacher, but to be more direct she teaches 7th grade general music and is the choral or vocal music director at the school. Her daily routine consists of the following, taking attendance and watching the morning announcements before class starts. Then she teaches 3 periods of general music, then she finally gets to have her half an hour choir rehearsal, which you have to audition to be a part of. Then she teaches another period, then off to lunch! After lunch she plans her criteria…

Through my assistant job at the library I have learned to work with a staff to plan events for kids during the summer. I learned that planning is not easy and there are many administrative hoops that you have to jump through in order to plan a successful event. I have been teaching roller skating to kids in the community for about four years now and this experience has taught me to work with people all ages and has given me a chance to develop leadership skills. I have learned to be an empathetic leader, by helping them learn and grow from their mistakes and providing emotional support. Spearheading this class was no walk in the park. This experience put my leadership abilities, patience, and positivity to the test; however, I am proud to say that I have taught over four hundred students how to roller skate proficiently over these past 4 years. Being a roller skating instructor has really shaped my qualities and values I have now. These leadership qualities and skills I have gained from my experience of being a roller skating instructor are transferrable to my ability to be a good RA. I know that this job will help me continue to improve my leadership skills and allow me to learn from my residents, co-workers and supervisors. At last, being a crew leader has given me the chance to be a mentor and a leader, guiding the freshmen to discover what it takes to be…
