The Mcfarland Cross Country Team
Ricky Williams, a NFL player, once said, “ A team takes on the personality of the head coach.” If one were to construe the meaning of this quote, then one would look at Coach Jim White and the McFarland cross country team. The kids of the McFarland cross country team were known as pickers in the past, but Coach White was able to edify them into the cross country state final champions. Because of the characters Coach White possess, the McFarland cross country team was able to win the state finals. Coach White is a key character in the movie because he demonstrates responsible, strict, and caring character.
McFarland won the state finals because Coach White was always strict towards the team. In the beginning of the movie, Coach White gets …show more content…
For example, Coach White is the one who takes the responsibility for the first loss of the team. He could of blamed the team, or he could of gotten furious at them for not winning. Instead, he chose to take the responsibility by himself. He never reinforces the team to emulate the other teams. Instead, he tells the team that it is his fault for not training them on hills, and he even finds a place with hills for them to practice. He also takes the responsibility for having the Diaz family in their team by adjusting their practice time to not overlap with the Diaz’s job as pickers. All the responsibilities he took over for the team shows that he truly cares for the …show more content…
A team will never succeed without the care of a coach, and Coach White is able to provide the care that the team needed. For instance, the Diaz’s father tells the Diaz siblings to drop out of the cross country team because it interferes with their job as pickers. In order for the cross country team to avoid dispersion, Coach White volunteers to pick in the fields until he is saturated with sweat. Coach White did not have to help out in the fields, but he chose to because he cares for the Diaz siblings. When the McFarland team wins their first game, Coach White takes them to the beach for the first time. Taking the team to the beach was not a necessary job as a coach, but Coach White chose to take them because he cared for them. The care that Coach White had for the team brought them one step closer to being champions.
The people surrounding one’s life will definitely have a big impact in one’s future. The McFarland cross country team was able to win the state finals because they had an amazing coach like Jim White. For every team, an influential coach is necessary. Coach White’s strict, responsible, and caring character is the reason why the team was able to win. Jim White was the one who influenced the McFarland team to be the winners they are

Providing these anecdotes of Coach Fitz allows the reader to form an opinion on Fitz and further lets the reader comprehend what type of people are going to be present in the narrative. In the beginning of the story, Lewis describes meeting Coach Fitz and recalls that he "...had no idea who he was, except that he played in the Oakland A's farm system and was spending his off-season, for reasons [he] couldn't fathom, coaching eighth-grade basketball."(121).     Coach Ken Carter is offered a job to coach the basketball team at his former high school, Richmond High, where he was one of the best athletes to ever attend a secondary education there. He took the job to bring change into the poor neighborhood of Richmond but more importantly the student athletes on their basketball team. He made the athletes sign a contract outlining that they will only be allowed to participate in games if the players attend all their classes and practices, maintain a C average, wear a tie and suit on game days, and respect all their teammates and coaches. Coach Carter used a variety of ways to lead and motivate the team to get them on their way to the state championships undefeated. Although he noticed from the progress reports that most of his athletes were doing poor academically, violating the contract the athletes signed at the beginning of the season, so he took immediate action. To get the attention of his athletes, school, and community, that the first word in the term "student athlete" is "student", he locked the gym and cancelled all the games until his athletes showed improvement in their grades. This caused huge commotion and made the athletes, the school, and most of the community extremely mad. After long debate whether the lock should come off or not, the school board decided to open the gym doors and continue the season. Coach Carter did not support the message that "basketball players or any athletes are above the law", he wanted to guide them to success in the future so they do not end up like most kids from Richmond, in jail or died.
