Carlo Crivelli's St. Michael
I have chosen to do this assignment on the art piece by Carlo Crivelli “St. Michael”. This panting is one of the Four Panels from an Altarpiece that was painted in Ascoli Piceno, Italy. In this particular painting the subject matter and content are very similar. Crivelli painted Saint Michael standing on Lucifer showing when Lucifer tried to over throw God, St. Michael and his army defeated Lucifer. In this piece Carlo Crivelli was showing representation. The reason this painting, “St. Michael”, is representational is Crivelli is showing a biblical era when Lucifer was overtaken. Carlo Crivelli’s role in this painting is giving form to spiritual forces. In this painting Saint Michael is holding a balance with two humans on one side and a weight

    The heavily-muscled grave-diggers emerge from murky shadows, the mourners are so much smaller that they seem placed some distance away, the officer directing operations beside the bishop is obscured and only the young man above the saint stands out poignantly in his red cloak. Characteristically, light imitates the action of the sun by falling from the right. The scene takes the viewer back to the age of the Church of the catacombs. Caravaggio was well accustomed to painting multi-figural compositions. His use of monumental figures in the foreground compared to the smaller figures behind them creates the depth that is not obvious otherwise due to the dark background. Although the classical niche he painted in the back wall indicates more depth than there would be otherwise. Best known for religious art, notably renowned for his vivid realism and rejection of his idealization. Caravaggio does this through his manipulation of space, his use of perspective, and his use of chiaroscuro and tenebrism. His figures emerge dramatically from the background.     The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky. Fra Carnevale creates a mysterious, yet orderly, scene of subtle emotion and veiled heterogeneity.…
