Norton Museum
When taking a trip to the Norton Museum of Art I chose a one dimensioned painting called Adam that was located on the first floor. The artist is Nicholas Carone and was painted in 1956. To the left of the painting, Adam, was another painting named Personage which was painted by Robert Mothewell in 1943. Personage is an abstract oil painting on canvas with multiple different colors. To the right of Adam was a sculpture called Sea Quarry and was created by Theodore Roszak. The sculpture was not an obvious choice that it was a sea animal at first. I had to stand there for a minute and really look at the sculpture to being to see what it was really intended for the sculpture to be. Returning to my original choice, Adam by Nicholas Carone, it is also an oil painting done on canvas. Carone first started with a plane black picture and continued to manipulate it with white paint color and other lines using different thick and thin brushes. The picture was made to represent and recreate light and shadow but is opaque. It uses several different elements of art including color, value, line, shape, and space. “Adam”s composition is curved lines and is known as an Abstract Expressionism type of art. Located at the entrance of the third floor that was designated as Europe, I chose a three dimensional sculpture that is called the Archangel Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan by Henry High Armstead. This sculpture was started and finished in the year 1852. There was no art work next to the piece I chose but on the other side of the wall that it was on there was a painting called The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape by Alessandro Tiarini. The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape is an oil painting done on a canvas in 1640. This sculpture is a cast statue based on one of the saints. It was created to show the strength of Saints and how they were loyal, and angelic hosts of heaven out of a bronze material that was shaped and carved. The art work was purchased by the

My family and I recently visited the Orlando Museum of Art in Orlando, Florida. The museum enjoys a seemingly eclectic collection of artifacts, sculptures, photographs, and paintings. While perusing the gallery I was fascinated by one painting in particular. The piece was called “Ante Meridian”, oil on board, c.a. 1935 by Frederick Judd Waugh (American 1861-1940). This representational painting was of a presumably north eastern coast line where waves were battering the cliffs and rocks during a stormy day. The sky was ominous yet you don’t see the rain falling. The sun appears to illuminate a jetty in the distance giving you the impression that the storm was passing. The focal point of the painting is a rather large wave, cresting, foaming, and crashing against the cliff wall set off in the left foreground and at the same time overwhelming a smaller set of rocks in the lower foreground. We catch the wave just after impact, slashing backwards into the surf. Waugh’s brush work was loose and open, yet still showed surprising detail in the rock and cliff formations. The paint was heavy, thickest on the wave caps and froth, textured to give you a feeling that the wave was jumping off the board. Waugh seemed to employ the impasto technique in specific areas of the painting where he wanted to emphasis a rich tactile surface. The art work was physically very large in comparison to the other pieces in the gallery. It measured 45 inches by 65 inches. It was prominently placed in the center of the room on its own wall which seemed barley large enough to hold the frame. This, I believe, added to the overwhelming I got when I studied this Waugh’s work. My first response when I turned the corner and saw Ante Meridian was to stop in my tracks and stare at it. It is a very powerful piece. I exclaimed to my wife that I had found the piece of art I wanted to write about. I love this painting and…

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky. Fra Carnevale creates a mysterious, yet orderly, scene of subtle emotion and veiled heterogeneity.…

The artwork that I chose for the museum art assignment was Footed Goblet, 1924, painted by Fernand Leger. Footed Goblet is at first glance a precisely-ordered grid of rectangles and curved shapes that lie flat against the picture plane. The painting was done on a medium of oil on canvas. Looking closely, objects described in terms of basic geometric forms become visible: upon a table rests an electric light, a book, a domino, and an adjustable lamp. On the shelf sits a footed glass.…

During our tour at the Legion of Honor, we observed art starting from the early and High Renaissance. Next, we went to the Dutch Baroque period, British art, and ended at the impressionists. A most notable work of art from the tour was “The Annunciation” by Master of the Retable of the Reyes Católicos. This oil on wood panel painting was created in the late 1500s, during the High Renaissance period of the art historical cannon. It portrays the biblical event found in the Gospel of Luke in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is pregnant with Jesus, the son of God. “The Annunciation” is a religious painting and is an example of the many great works of art from the High Renaissance.…

By taking a virtual tour through the Cosmic Buddha exhibit, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I was able to observe and analyze the different pieces of artwork and sculptures. Through observing the similarities in the mediums and tones of the painting or sculpture, I was able to identify the various differences between certain pieces of artwork. All things considered, I found a new fondness for the elements involved to construct such astounding pieces of artwork.…

I went to the North Carolina Museum of Art on April 8th, a beautiful and sunny day. Being around the museum conjured a sense of nostalgia to my middle school days when I took a field trip to the museum. Since that last visit I have gained a better understanding about art and what goes into every piece of work. I have also gained more experience, back then I did not know how to shade properly and did not know a thing about composition. Now, I have a greater appreciation for every stroke of a brush and color applied. The reason I chose the North Carolina Museum of Art was solely to re-experience the art with my new artistic eye. While walking through the museum, I searched for that one piece of art that would catch my eye and inspire me to talk…

The first piece I want to talk about is shown at Angel Alley, a local clothing and art boutique. The atmosphere alone in this shop is amazing. From its’ collection of art to funky local clothing and carefully picked items to lavish yourself with. It sets the mood to see the art in its true element. It almost seems to be among friends. This first piece is by Laila Cola, a local artist. Its media I’m guessing is oil on canvas. Its size is two feet nine inches by four feet. The first thing that attracted me to this piece was the colors. They’re extremely intense croma and complimentary to each other (blue and orange, black and white). So the relationship between the background and the object stands out and also creates an after image if one looks away for a second. The image itself is a personal favorite of mine as well as many others. It is the human body. It almost seems androgynous but the slenderness of the arms suggests that it is female. Although only her torso is showing, the angle of her shoulders illustrate that she is standing contropposto. The artist did a remarkable job of showing gravity and movement. She did this through the use of different ranges of values which created shadows in the muscles portraying them aroused…

On February 6, 2016, I visited the Tampa Museum of Arts located in downtown Tampa. Originally I was planning to visit the Dali Museum, however on that day the weather was awful. So, I had to visit a museum that was close by the area where my aunt lives. It was my first time visiting this museum and I wasn’t too eager about going there, however it turned out to be a great experience. The museum wasn’t as entertaining, but the artwork was fascinating and eye-catching. Being able to see the artwork in person allows your imagination to run wild, allowing you to become a part of the artistic world. It gives you the opportunity to admire the real beauty of the artwork because you get to see the exact details and colors of the selected piece. Also, you can make inferences about the art just from the environment that surrounds it. For example, the area where the art is located in the museum or…
