Campus Carry Laws Essay
In the United States of America, most Americans would argue that the Second Amendment is one of the most important rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights until gun violence intentionally or unintentionally impacts their household. Unfortunately, most Americans have limited knowledge regarding the foundation of the Second Amendment and the guaranteed right to bear arms; therefore, every incident that Americans encounter is fair game. The premise is quite simple, “to protect citizens from the government” in the event the government attempt to “exert power beyond the powers enumerated in the Constitution” resulting in an infringement on the civil rights of its citizens. According to a study conducted by John Hopkins University (JHU), campus carry laws are unlikely to bring an end to, or prevent an active shooter situation. In fact, the study revealed that students who are licensed to carry guns are more than likely to cause more deaths and injuries in an active shooter situation. According to the JHU study, an unarmed student will be more likely to disarm an active shooter. Furthermore, the study revealed that over the past 30 years, only 12% of the over 100 mass shootings in the United States on college campuses and elsewhere occurred in “gun free zones”, and only 5% occurred in “gun restricted zones”. The truth of the matter is that in real-life active shooter events are unpredictable, happening quickly using high power firearms to cause maximum damage. Furthermore, there is no pattern or method to the active shooter’s madness, except to cause great harm; therefore, a college student with a handgun are not trained tactically to deal with these type of situations, or any other situation pertaining to the proper use of a handgun. With this said, my concerns are the reckless behavior of college students, from alcohol use, drug use, petty arguments, not to mention anxiety and depression, will these factors potentially result in gun violence.
