Why We Should Have Concealed Weapons In College Essay
College and Weapons
Should college students and teachers have concealed weapons? A concealed weapon, or a concealed carry (CCW), is when an instrument or device, used for attacking or defending in combat, is hidden when in public. College students that are 21 years old, or above, can legally hold a concealed weapon. In order to carry a concealed weapons, one must purchase a permit and be a resident of their state or country. Schools shouldn't allow concealed weapons because weapons are too dangerous for college students, college students would not use them for safety purposes, and criminals will use this as an opportunity to kill people.
Weapons are too dangerous for college students, and teachers. The Harvard School of Public Health found that “students who have a firearm at college are more likely to binge drink, drive a motor vehicle after binge drinking, use illegal drugs, vandalize property, and get into trouble with the police”

The Department of Justice conducted a study and “found that 93% of violent crimes that victimize college students occur off campus” ("College Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Weapons"). This research shows, conclusively, that college students on campuses are significantly safer than off-campuses. It is because of strict policies that have kept firearms off our nation's campuses that made colleges and universities a safe domain. The United States of America found out that “there were 11,920 total gun homicides in the United States, but only 10 total murders on the nation's college campuses [in 2013]” ("College Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Weapons"). College campuses prohibit concealed weapons, while outside of the campuses, concealed weapons are allowed. More crimes are committed when places allow concealed weapons, as you can see from the quote. If campuses were to allow concealed weapons, then violent crimes will, and shall, occur more

In the article “Students, Guns and Politics” by Allie Grasgreen, she describes the debate on college campuses whether or not students should be allowed to conceal carry firearms. It seems that Grasgreen’s position on the debate is neutral, she cites arguments from both sides but does not take a stance herself. In my opinion, I do not think the best course of action against gun violence is to necessarily evoke a policy such as conceal carry, since this allows more access to firearms and their presence on a campus community. Though I do understand that gun owners have their own rights, I just do not see the necessity, and I believe there should be more steps in general for people to obtain firearms. Even if there was perhaps a situation where…

Meaning not every college student is necessarily your average student as stated in the article. The author discusses that students carrying guns are more likely to be white males, engaging in risky behaviors and binge drinking, be in trouble with the law, and attend college in southern and mountain states. And I feel he is right, because down south your average student that would be more likely to have a gun is a male that usually would be into hunting and came from a very country background, other then a black male for instance. The policy that is trying to be enforced on campus that there are no concealed weapons allowed may not work. This policy may not make students feel safer its just kind of there for a safety blanket. The next bet step to making these students on campus feel better may be to setup a more stricter plan to crack down on these concealed weapons. Plans such as making it mandatory to do room checks at least once a month, and maybe have more police on foot around campus. This may help the student feel a bit safer. I think the crackdown to be more strict on campus with concealed weapons would definitely help the campus students feel more safe and not have to worry about walking alone or even just walking to class in general. Just a few little things could make a big…

It still does not determine how each student feels about CC a firearm on campus. Though both Aaron, and Taylor attend small universities and feel safe on their campuses. They still feel students who have a concealed carry weapons license (CCW) should be allowed to carry their firearm on campus. This was the next question I wanted to answer. Taylor Beavers who was a 2015 graduate of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Physical Training (PT), also agrees with being authorized to CC a weapon on campus if one possesses the licenses to do so. SPC Beavers is also an Army veteran, and she feels that being in the Army has an encouragement in why she would support the idea of allowing conceal carry on campus. Slippery Rock University is also known as SRU, has about 10,000 students enrolled in their institution. Compared to Taylor and Aaron’s college it is rather big. So one can see that size really does not matter in this case. There was one response out of all my interviews that raised a red flag. Hannah Burras a Nursing major at The University of Toledo was not on board for carrying a firearm on campus. “I do not feel that students should be allowed to carry a firearm on campus... I would never even think of taking a gun into an area that was set up for educational purposes.” Hannah shocked me with this response because she also has her CCW license, yet…

Would faculty and students benefit from a concealed weapon permit holder to carry on college campuses? Guns should be permitted on college campuses because schools are gun free zones, making them vulnerable for the opportunity of crime to occur. One reason why guns should be allowed on college campuses is because time is of the essence with a split second to make a life changing decision. Another reason why weapons should be authorized on school grounds is because, it can assist with detaining an active shooter before law enforcement arrives on the scene.…

Imagine the feeling of safety as if it is constantly within our control or ability, people that are in possession of a concealed weapon are aware of the responsibility and the results of what can happen when using a concealed weapon. Safety of teachers, all other employees and students at a learning intuition can greatly improve if the staff could be armed with concealed weapons. Also we must remember that all citizens of the United States have the right to carry and own a weapon as guaranteed by the second amendment of the constitution of the United States of America. Will having students carrying handguns on campus actually make students feel safer? Texas Senate recently passed a bill that all students at least 21 years of age with a license to carry concealed handguns will be allowed to carry their weapons on college and university campuses. Legislation allowing handguns on campus violates the sense of protection students feel when at school, leaving many questioning civility. In April of 2007, Virginia Tech experienced one of the deadliest shooting In U.S history by a student, leaving 20 people injured and 32 slain.…

What if you were a teacher and an armed intruder came into your school? How would you protect your students and yourself? If we allowed teachers to carry a firearm that is stored in a locked container a student would not be able to acquire the weapon, and only in emergency situations would the teacher be allowed to remove it from the container. If there was to be a situation where an intruder entered the school building the teacher would be able to protect themselves and the students. There should; however, be a…

That in it of itself is an eye opener to those for gun on college campuses. College campuses are a safe heaven, where students can be at ease, and be at peace knowing that they are protected 24/7. Lawmakers should take joy as well. Campus police is actually doing what’s asked of them and doing it above and beyond. Police are doing what is asked of them. Now imagine if a student or even faculty member such as a teacher with no crisis training is asked to respond to an emergency situation? Many if not most would panic and not how to respond to the situation at hand. Situations could lead to disaster, so why not leave that to the…

How safe are students on campus? Today, many universities state-wide are gun free and considered safe locations. According to David Skorton and Glenn Altschuler's article, "Do We Really Need More Guns On Campus?," "colleges and universities are far safer than most public spaces in the United States." However, there are others who believe colleges would be safer with concealed gun carry. A group, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, who goes against this idea argues in their article "College Campuses Are Less Safe Without Concealed Weapons" that a professor that is licensed shouldn’t be obligated to be a victim when they have the right to defend themselves. The argument doesn't mention how permitted gun carry would only possibly stop shootings…

Many wonder whether or not any forms of weapons should be approved on campus grounds. College staff, students, and families, may worry about their safety on campus while attending college. Safety tends to be ensured through protective weapons. A big controversy among the society of college, is whether or not concealed weapons should be allowed. Some people believe that teachers/faculty should be allowed to posses a weapon for protection on campus, others believe that both teachers and students should be able to protect themselves with their own concealed weapon, and others believe that concealed weapons on campus only provide danger and destruction. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but others fight for what…

Lately it seems as though there is a stanch split in our county when it comes to the gun debate. One side views guns as the problem while the other views them as the solution. Many places including schools are designated gun free zones. Despite this designation we are all aware of the many campus shooting that have taken place within the last few years. I believe that college students, teacher and administrators should have the right to carry their legal firearms onto college campuses. It is my understanding that gun free zones create easy targets. Students, teachers and administrators have a better chance at saving their own lives and the lives of others when armed. I also believe that any campus…

On Friday, December 14 there was a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. A man shot an entrance into the school, through the front office and then continued toward the classrooms. He walked into a Kindergarten classroom of 14 innocent 4 and 5 students and a substitute teacher, in which he shot all of them. He continued toward a first grade classroom in which he shot the teacher and six of the students. This is all could have been stopped if a citizen with a Concealed Carry Permit, CCP, was near during the incident. A school isn't allowed to have guns on campus and that makes it all the bit more easy for a shooter to walk in and not be stopped. Concealed weapons should be legal in all states because it is a right of the US citizen, can stop…

Concealed carry is the right to carry a handgun or other weapon in a concealed manner and the current concealed weapon laws vary from state to state. Carrying-concealed-weapons (CCW) laws have nothing to do with private firearms ownership in the home. They relate solely to allowing individuals to carry their concealed guns almost anywhere in the community. Currently, 48 U.S. states have some form of concealed weapon law. In 39 of these states, issuing officials may not arbitrarily deny a permit application if the applicant has no criminal background and some states require a very minimal training program. These types of laws have come to be known as "shall issues" and they must be abolished. In two states, Vermont and Alaska, the "shall issue" laws are so weak that any non-felon who has reached the age of 16 or 21 respectively can carry a concealed weapon without a permit or training of any kind.…

In many bigger schools and cities, campus carry will be the first time many students and faculty will think that they are near a gun; however, in states like Texas people are around guns and legal gun owners most of the day. Many places that people visit on a daily or weekly basis allow some sort of legal carry; for example, banks, restaurants, stores, and any public property allow guns if the individual is properly licensed. When questions arise about exactly who can be licensed, opponents of campus carry must not fear. The process to legally obtain a firearm, and then a concealed carry permit is not an easy task. One must first pass a background check (which checks an individual's criminal and mental health history) to even purchase a firearm, then to be able to legally carry the gun one must take an extensive concealed carry class. Since 1998 when the mandatory federal background checks became law over four-hundred thousand applicants have been denied for criminal or mental reason. The individuals that finish all these steps go on to become some of the most law-abiding citizens; in fact, legal gun owners are five times less likely to commit a violent crime, and fourteen times less likely to commit a non-violent crime. One group that the general population all agree on to be allowed to carry are our police force. With the idea that one can trust a police officer with the ability to carry, one can only come to conclusion that a police officer’s opinion would be highly valued; thus, when seeing that a 2013 survey of over fifteen thousand police officers found that ninety-one percent support conceal carry for civilians; therefore, one must conclude then that police officers know how important an armed citizen is for the lowering of crime. States with shall-issue concealed carry have seen reduced crime, eight and a…
