Camarena Consciousness Ceremony
The most frightening and the most enlightening PDP I have done was the Camarena Consciousness Ceremony. On Thursday, November 5th Rachel, Mia and I went to the NIRSA Room at the SAC to to learn more about our inner selves from the Honors Director, Phame Camarena.

I signed up for the Consciousness Ceremony because I was intimidated by the secretive nature of the meeting, and had never tried any form of meditation or lucid dreaming. I hoped to have a greater understanding of my self, and reflect on what my subconscious images mean to me.

As we arrived at the NIRSA room, we heard a loud, undulating and repetitive noise, low in tone and somewhat calming. After a few minutes, Phame appeared from the side door, wearing a kimono. He invited us into

We sat in a circle as we learned a little about the history of meditation and spiritual journeys in other cultures. We each took a sip of tea as we learned what might be achieved through our participation, and noticed how the rest of the room started to fade to black as we stared at the center candle flame. Phame then instructed us to lie down and put the blindfolds on. He turned the music up, and everyone was quiet. The music seemed to change as I listened intently. First high pitched, then slow and quiet. I did not even realize that I had fallen asleep before I opened my eyes. I could see people moving about, with the fire-light of the candle in the background. I thought for a moment that everyone was leaving without me, before I realized that I did not recognize any of the figures wearing dark cloaks moving silently around the room. I was imagining this whole scene in my subconciouness, I realized, as the quiet figures began to mill around me, and I could see that there was a fire lit behind them and they were eating out of small bowls. As I focused from left to right, small details began to appear, like stone walls of a

It seemed like I was wandering into a different dimension. My senses were becoming acquainted to new feelings: guttural whispers, excruciating odour, ponderous glass-like air and the cemented, pungent, taste of death! As I opened the door candlelight rose to greet me but who lit them? I was informed that the secluded house I was purchasing has been unoccupied forever.…

However, Jordan Paper created an outline that defines a mystical event, which can help a person determine whether or not they have experienced one. The first sequence of events of when a mystical event occurs is usually when a person is sitting still or moving in a pattern that does not require any thought. For example, during Jordan Paper’s first mystical event he stated, “I was lying on my side and directly in my vision across a sunlit, mown field I perceived an attractive woman.”. Moreover, the second stage of a mystical event is a feeling of merging with a person’s vision or surroundings. As Jordan witnessed the attractive woman, slowly approach him until she and the rest of his surroundings filled his view and became one with him. The third sequence of a mystical event is becoming one with light from within their self. In the case of Jordan, the light was white and he had the option of entering the light or have the mystical event cease. Additionally, the fourth stage of a mystical event is when they feel themselves completely disappear. For instance, Jordan mentioned that he understood what the meaning of death meant as he felt not-being. The fifth stage of a mystical event is when a person is aware that they can stop the experience from progressing any further. This is the moment when Jordan had the choice to enter the light or not. Consequently, since he entered the bright white light he achieved an immeasurable amount of ecstasy.…

A mere twenty minutes later, I was exhausted. The sun had burst through the clouds and was basking the mountainside in violent light. I was roasting in the safety of my outer shell. As my once confident steps became desperate shuffles, I began to understand that my end was near. But I had a goal to achieve, and so I fought to deny what I knew to be true. Soon, I fell back and separated from the group. It was then that the guide made his move. He swooped down on me, looked me in the eye, and told me it was…

I was disappearing again. I could feel it. I could feel the sterile white walls slowly sucking all the colour out of my skin. I could tell that the iron bars covering my window were slathering at the curve of my body. They were tired of always having to stand up straight; they too were slowly taking a part of me. They were taking my outline. The fluorescent light was burning the colour from my hair and the whispers were carrying it away strand by strand.…

The sky started to glow fiery red as the sun moved behind the mountains. My grandfather and I regularly walked during the evenings but that day we walked for a while. There was something different about that day, as though we didn’t want to go back home. We kept on strolling down the red brick road until we reached the famous Buddhist monument which was fairly close from our house. The monument had immense eyes that stared at everyone who walked past it. My grandfather explained to me that the eyes were there to look after the whole world and everyone who lived in it. On the contrary of the perception of that monument, I was rather angry at the sight of an elderly woman with an infant begging for food. I asked my grandfather, “If the eyes are…
