Effective questioning techniques to gather information from the client
Interviewer: Can you tell me what brings you in today?
Client: My wife just got diagnose with cancer
Interviewer: Is this your first therapy section, since her diagnose
Client: Yes, this will be my first section
Interviewer: Well Mr. Robert I know that it may be difficult, but do you understand what your wife condition is?
Client: “Yes, I know that she is very sick, and she was taken away from me our home because I can’t take care of her like I use to.” He puts his head down and begins to weep.” I miss my wife and wish that she could come home.
Interviewer: Well I’m truly sorry to hear this Mr. Robert, getting up offering him tissue, and letting him know everything will be ok.
Demonstration of paraphrasing and summarization
Mr. Robert: I came here today, because I feel confuse on what to do. My wife is in a home, we had no children’s so I feel like I’m here by myself, and I am angry and upset.
Caseworker: So sorry to here to your feeling like this. So you are angry and upset, could you elaborate on you’re feeling a little more. Mr. Robert: Husband; I feel like my wife leaving to soon and I just do not know what to do about it.
Demonstration of Empathy through Reflection:
Mr. Robert: My wife is dying slowly, and there’s not much I can do to help her
Caseworker: I can see that you are scared. And I know what you are going through, with losing my mother a year ago. So I understand you are scared. But I’m here to help you through this taught time.
Mr. Robert: Yes I’m scared, because when she pass away, then I’ll be here alone
Caseworker: Well you’re not alone, you have me, and whenever you need something just come in and, we can have a one on one section
