Alice: I was in complete shock. No one is ever prepared to hear those words and, you know, I just started crying because it’s just, you’re just worrying about death and dying, and you’re having to kind of, sort of talk to yourself about all the possible outcomes. It’s a very lonely place because the really difficult thing of that period is just, is the uncertainty. I remember hearing about a friend who had cancer in 2012 and that was devastating, but for it to happen to me – it, it was a lot, you know. I felt like I was in a completely sort of separate place from everyone else. And, though my family and friends were, you know very caring, very understanding, you can’t…

Chris came closer, as if he was going to make a move on Lucy. Lucy leaned in as well. “Did that just happen…?” Lucy said with a little chuckle. “Yeah, I think so.” Said Chris hoping she would feel the same way. “Chris?” whispered Lucy. “Yes?” said Chris. “I love you.” said Lucy. I have never stopped loving you. “Me too!” exclaimed Chris. “But….” sighed Lucy. Chris looked down with sadness in his eyes, knowing they would never be together again. “Lucy, I want to say I’m sorry, for everything. I really do mean it. I wish we could just go back, to the good old days, back when we had no worries, no problems. Just a girl and a boy fulfilling their dreams. Just hear this Lucy, One day; I hope you find the man of your dreams. I hope you’re blessed with beautiful children, house, clothing and everything marriage has to offer. Just, if I beg of you, Lucy. Don’t fall for a man like me.” Lucy stood in shock, surprised at the man Chris has become. He was no longer an evil coward, but a man that recognises his mistakes, and Lucy appreciated that. Chris got on the transit bus, not even looking back. She looked at her watch; it was 7:13am, on a Cold, Winnipeg…

Rufo was biting at the bit, as always, to be let outside to chase the squirrels and creatures still awoken from the night before. As I reached for the door handle, he lunged onto me and began licking my face intrusively. A little too much slobber for my liking, but hey, I couldn’t complain. At least someone still loved me. Laying on the floor, Rufo expressing his love and companionship, I began reminiscing on my ending marriage. How was this all happening? The love of my life, Hallina, was leaving me. She was the woman I knew I would spend the rest of my life with. The woman who would have my blue-eyed babies; the woman who would be there for me in every success, triumph, and every situation…she was truly leaving me. “How is this happening?” I inquired to Rufo. Rufo simply looked at me with a puzzled, crazed look.…
