German scientists Max Bockmühl and Gustav Ehrhart first synthesized methadone in 1937. The synthetic opioid analgesic was created while they were searching for a pain reliever that would be safe to use during surgeries and had a low potential for addiction. On September 11, 1941, they filed for a patent for what they called Hoechst 10820 or Polamidon. Eli Lilly and Company brought methadone to the United Stated in 1947. They gave it the trade name Dolophine, which came from the German Dolphium, which came from the Latin "dolor" for pain (Wikipedia).…

Methadone occupies a position of huge prominence in drug misuse treatment to date. It is estimated there are around 650,000 illicit drug users receiving treatment globally (WHO 2008). Historically it was the earliest form of opioid replacement therapy and continues to be the most widely used form in the United States, Europe and Australia (Ward et al 1998). The most recent figures for Scotland show approximately 22,224 people are receiving methadone for drug misuse (Scottish Exec 2007). The effectiveness of methadone treatment is however questioned by some critics. This paper aims to describe methadone intervention treatment, look at the evidence surrounding it and discuss its effectiveness. For the purpose of this essay the history and treatment goals of methadone will be identified. The paper will then go on to discuss 4 main areas of debate in treatment, namely:…

This writer interviewed and researched the Aegis Medical Systems located at 103 Modesto Avenue in Modesto, California; however there are many Aegis Medical Systems treatment centers throughout California. All Aegis Medical System treatment centers follow the same practicum. These centers offer outpatient treatment with three different treatment options. The three treatment options differ in the length in which the person receives drug-replacement therapy. These treatment options include “a short-term detox program, lasting 21 days; a long-term detox program, lasting up to 180 days; as well as a maintenance program” (Aegis Medical Systems, INC., 2012). Each of these treatments consists of an induction period and a tapering period with the replacement drug methadone. The client is slowly given methadone, which is called the induction period. The dosage of methadone increases until the symptoms of addiction and withdrawal no longer hinder the client’s efforts towards fighting their addiction. This writer was told that this drug-replacement therapy does not stop all the symptoms, just lessens the symptoms from being so overwhelming that the client can not focus (personal communication, September 5, 2012).…
By the end of phase 4, the client has received almost a year of drug treatment. Presence is still required for counseling (rather individual or group, whichever is necessary), social support groups and outside recovery groups as noted in Phase 3 but weekly attendance drops to once a week (Roll et al., 2005 & Wolfers, 2006). There should be an improvement in the participant’s life skills and if they have any problem areas they need to look into them such as employment or housing (Wolfers,…
As I observed this meeting, I found most of the people were very proud to be there and were very interested in what others had to say. The group appeared very close and knew each other very well. I was surprised to hear how the community and one another were so important in each others sobriety. This was the first time I have ever been apart of any type of substance abuse meeting and I now have a great respect for those who have overcome long, hard pasts and are now not only clean but continue to help others.…
