Bouncey Egg Experiment
The Bouncy Egg Experiment!
Mrs. Murosky
December 19, 2013

Introduction:
GOAL: The goal of this experiment is to get an egg to bounce.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? : The results of the egg experiment is important because it shows what the membrane of an egg looks like, but allows the experimenter to have fun in the process.
LITERATURE: The acids in the vinegar make the shell deteriorate. Eggs contain "calcium carbonate"(this is what makes it hard), and vinegar is an acid. When they both combine a chemical reaction takes place, and carbon dioxide is released. This is what bubbles are made of. The vinegar makes the egg soft because it takes all the carbon out. Since the egg shell is made out of "calcium carbonate" and is "eaten" up by the acidic vinegar. It leaves behind the inner membrane and gives it the rubbery effect.
WHY I CHOSE THIS: I chose this experiment because it was fascinating how an egg that breaks easily, can bounce. My papa suggested an experiment that my neighbor recommended.
HYPOTHESIS: I think that the egg will grow then explode!

PROCEDURE:
LIST OF SUPPLIES:
1.) A clear, see through cup.
2.) 5 cups of distilled white vinegar.
3.) A brown egg.
STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE:
1.) Put the egg in the cup.
2.) Pour all of the vinegar over the egg.
3.) Let the egg set for two-three days.
4.) Take the egg out and see what happened.

DATA AND CALCULATIONS:
Day 1: The egg looks normal and looks like the bubbles are starting to form around it.
Day 2: The egg shell looks like it has started to dissolve and it is floating to the top.
Day 3: The shell dissolved and is floating on the top of the vinegar. The only thing left is the eggs inner membrane.

Observations:
1.) The egg looks like it is see through.
2.) You can see the yoke.
3.) The egg has grown.
4.) The egg looks like its white now instead of brown.
5.) The egg is translucent and very thin.
6.)

Conclusion: The things I would have done differently are that I would make a more stable structure so that the egg would have a smaller percentage of breaking or dismantling. Otherwise, I would have made it so that there was more weight near the bottom so that the bottle would not tilt so much during the fall causing the egg to land on its side and break. Some questionable results I got were that the material completely absorbed the shock of the egg for the most part, and then if the egg would be harmed during the fall. Changes in design for a higher drop height would include a more stable…

    Egg Drop Project Essay

For this project, I made a capsule for an egg that is to be dropped from about twenty feet. This capsule that I made was not what I was thinking at first but when I started to build it, I saw that this capsule would hold better than the one that I was thinking which was a triangular capsule with the egg in the middle but I saw later one that the egg would break if it hit one of the flat sides. The capsule is a cube that is made out of the tongue depressors and I used most of the yarn for the big cage and I used the Elmer’s glue to glue the tongue depressors together. I used pieces of the paper clips to hold the popsicle sticks together with the tongue depressors and some more glue. I then made the center, which was made by two popsicle sticks that I had which formed into a triangle and I made a little railing around it with the paper clips. I then put the cotton puffs inside the triangle that was formed with the two popsicle sticks and it is used to cushion the egg while it’s falling so when it hits the floor, then it wouldn’t receive all the damage if the cage were to break and the small egg holder were to fall out of the capsule or if it were to hit the floor straight. I used the pipe cleaners to hole the egg inside the egg holder so that it doesn’t fall out of it and break. I used some glue to glue the cotton puffs to the railing that was made for the egg holder and to the two popsicle sticks.…

Obviously I built this device with some prior knowledge to physics and how to make this device successful. I have learned several equations about force, work, power, height, speed, velocity and a lot more. So with force, f=ma, then I can easily discern what the force of the egg will be. Also, since I know all of these things, than I can figure out all of the physics with just the equations. Also I learned, with these things, that if the force of the egg doesn’t have something to fall into, like cotton or balloons, then it will break, because the force needs to be shared or it takes over the egg. With that, I understood a basis of how the device should be.…
