1) a. Based on background knowledge regarding beta fish, I believe that the male beta fish will be the first out of the two specimens to display any aggressive behavior.
b.
- Pectorals flap at rapid speeds when the beta fish is uncomfortable and appears agitated.
- The gill cover expands in size when the beta fish is uncomfortable.
- Caudal fin moves quickly when agitated and also determines how quickly the specimen moves.
c.
1. H 0 : There is no change in the flapping speed. H A : There will be change in speed of the flapping.
2. H 0 : The gill cover will not expand. H A : There will be change in size of the gill cover.
3. H 0 : The caudal fin will not increase or decrease in speed. H A : The caudal fin will move rapidly.
d. - No color change occurs in interaction and separation. - Gill cover unfolded twice in 30 seconds.
e. Yes, my results do support my alternate hypothesis because firstly, we recorded that the gill cover would unfold more than once when put in an environment with another specimen of beta.
2) a. The worm will be more oriented to move toward the wet side of the paper towel as opposed to the dry side of the paper towel.
b. The response variable that I am going to use for this experiment will be the movement that will eventually increase to either the wet or dry side.
c.
H 0: There will be no movement by any of the worms.
H A : There will be movement as the worm goes to one of the sides.
d. My experimental design was very simple and realistic where in which I intended to get the best results out of it. It’s a paper towel placed inside of a Tupperware. We then put water on half of the paper towel and put worms at the middle of the box and observed which side it preferred to go to.
e. Yes, there are potential confounding factors in this experiment, such as placing the worms on the paper towel and also the amount of

The experiment was conducted in five trials. The pillbugs attraction to the substance was measured by the amount of time within one minute the pillbug was in the substance. Inside the crate the sand was placed on the left side followed by a cardboard divider and the cornstarch was placed on the right side followed by a divider, leaving a neutral spot in the middle where the pillbug was placed for one minute after each trial.…

I then prepared 4 dampened similar sized paper towels that were placed inside of the pots to prevent the escape of the red wiggler earthworms. I poured the soil evenly into the 3 pots until the soil filled ½ of the pot and patted down the soil evenly. Next the 2 mesh strainers were used to shift through the soil that the red wriggler worms were being contained in, the small mesh strainer was used to gather the dirt from the container and then the dirt was poured into the big mesh strainer and shaken until a worm was found, if not another scoop of dirt was shifted through until in total 10 worms were retrieved. 5 worms were put into the experimental nitrogen pot and the other 5 were distributed to the experimental phosphorus pot. Once all the worms had burrowed into the soil the rest of the pots was filled until the…

For future references what we could do to improve out methods of conducting this experiment is after each trial we should clean the choice tube to make sure there is no residue, which can cause miscalculations. Though the whole experiment we used different sizes of isopods. Maybe next time we can stick to one size throughout the whole experiment or we could do these trials by size. Preform the same trial a few times using different of pill bugs and see if the size of the pill bugs has anything to do with their…

The materials used for this lab were filter papers, a choice chamber, eight pill bugs, water, and tin foil. The first step of the process is to trace and cut the filter paper so it fits neatly within each side of the choice chamber. Then, put water each filter paper and place the damp filter paper into the choice chamber. The damped filter paper causes the pill bugs to not be able to crawl under the paper and therefore disrupting the results. Four pill bugs should be placed on either side and one side should be quickly covered with tin foil, so light cannot get in. Continuously for ten minutes, monitor how many pill bugs are on each side every thirty seconds. In the end, there should be twenty-one observations about the locations of the pill…

In order to understand a little bit about the effects of common household drugs such as nicotine and caffeine on pulsation rate, an experiment was conducted with Lumbriculus Variegattus (Blackworms). In week 1, we observed the basal rate of three different worms, and then placed the same three worms on different concentrations of caffeine and nicotine. “Caffeine is known to act as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain; it promotes sleep and suppresses aurosal, binding to the adenosine neurotransmitter receptor to block its inhibitory action” (CCNY lab manual, 2014). Before our experiment was conducted we hypothesized that increasing the concentration of caffeine will increase the pulsation rate. During this experiment we used 1.0mM, 3.0mM, and 10.0mM concentrations of caffeine. The highest the concentration the more effect it would have on the pulsation rate, so in this case we could assume that 10.0mM would have the highest effect on the pulsation rate of the blackworms.…

    Worms Vs. Dry Creatures

The worms chose the wet side of the paper towels rather than the dry side because the prefer moist places. This statement becomes clear when the data of the two trials is looked over. The data proves that mealworms prefer the wet side of the paper towel. Research says that mealworms prefer moist, dark places, and that cold stunts their growth. When the mealworms were taken out of the fridge, the larvae were slow to get moving. This is why the data for trial one is so scattered around. But by trial two the worms were all warmed up and active so the larvae were a lot quicker to get to where they wanted to go. That is why the data in trial two isn’t very scattered but trial one is very scattered. During the lab it took longer for the worms to…

    The Orangespotted Sunfish

The compressifrom body shape is not as favorable for fitting into small spaces as the anguilliform, eel-like, style but with the small size of these fish and a larger amount and variety of refuge or cover found in rivers, they survive quite well. This compressiform body style allows this fish to make quick turns and short, fast bursts of speed with good maneuverability. The caudal fin is forked with a low aspect ratio meaning the tail is broad, the fish has good acceleration from the start, and the tail aids in hovering. A forked tail allows for good acceleration and maneuverability with a slight amount of drag. The dorsal fin has ten anterior spines that are directly connected to the rays of the posterior dorsal fin. Spines help protect this fish from predators and keep them balanced. The anal fin, outlined in black, also has three spines for extra protection. They have short and rounded pectoral fins which contribute to speed and allow the fish to fit into small crevasses. The primary swimming form of the Orangespotted Sunfish is labriform because they row their pectoral fins, an oscillatory fin motion. The mouth of these fish are terminal and moderately…

The Siamese fighting fish is native to the tropical waters of Southeast Asia Malay, Thailand, Kampuchea, and Southern Vietnam. They dwell in rice paddies, shallow ponds, and slow moving streams, and are renowned for the ability to surface and gulp the air from above water in these relatively, fetid oxygen-poor environments. Most experienced aquarium hobbyists know that only one male B. splendens may be kept in an aquarium at a time as they exhibit extremely aggressive behavior toward males of their own species (thought they exhibit more…
