Bless me, Ultima
Is Ulima a witch?
Witches usually appear in Halloween but also in a book. Bless me, Ultima written by Rudolfo Anaya. This book is about a boy, Antonio, who is choosing between his mother’s dream and his father’s dream. In the meantime, Ultima comes to live with them, and with Ultima’s help, Antonio chooses to combine his parents’ dreams both. But Tenorio, an evil person who has three witch daughters, tries to kill Ultima and Antonio. Ultima is a witch because she performs black magic and has an owl as her soul.

Ultima curses Tenorio’s three daughters by the art of voodoo because they put a curse on Uncle Lucas. When Ultima is healing Lucas, she makes three dolls that may represent Tenorio’s daughters and curses them: “Then she took three pins, and after dipping them into the new remedy on the stove, she stuck a pin into each doll” (101). Ultima pins the three dolls and lays a curse on them. After that, two of the daughters dies. This proves that Ultima is a witch because she curses people.

When Tenorio tries to test if Ultima is a witch or not by putting a holy-cross sign on the door, Ultima doesn’t pass the tesbecause there are two needles on the floor. After Ultima passes through the door, Antonio finds two needles on the floor: ”I bent down and picked up the two needles that had been stuck to the top of the door frame” (135). This means that Ultima may be a witch because she may have taken the two needles out while her owl attacks Tenorio’s left eye. Ultima is scared that her witch identity will be revealed because she cheates on the test.

Furthermore, Ultima has a spiritual animal. When Tenorio kills Ultima’s owl, Ultima dies too because her owl is her soul: “I have killed the owl with a bullet molded by the Prince of Death!” he shouted at me. “The witch is dead, my daughters are avenged”! (258) Tenorio kills Ultima because his daughters are cursed by Ultima when she is healing Lucas. Tenorio knows if the owl is dead, Ultima will die too.

First, Tituba is a female descendant of the Arawaks. To be a part of such a magnificent lineage and history is something that most would be proud of. However, this is one of the sole causes that lead Tituba to her horrible death. Arawak culture is known to be significantly more peaceful than other Indian cultures and is known to have an iron belief in the supernatural. The fact that Indians and Negros have a firm belief in the supernatural was not an uncommon fact in the 16th and 17th Puritan society. Thus, when a group of girls whom were trying to take a glimpse of their futures and instead stumble upon a vision of their coffins, they accused of Tituba as a witch and her Indian husband John, as well. The white puritans around the time did not testify against this accusation due to the well-known fact of Indians being involved with supernatural doings. Samuel Parris, the white slave…

Over the next several months the two girls began to show strange behavior. Betty’s father, the Reverend Samuel Parris, was puzzled by the girl’s peculiar behavior and found out about the sessions with Tituba and decided that the girls were under the Devil’s spell. Soon the strange behavior spread to other girls in town. On February 29, 1692, the girls identified two local white women and the slave Tituba as the witches who were causing them such pain. The three accused women were carted off to jail in Boston and only Tituba confessed to practicing witchcraft, in which her life was saved. Over the next few weeks, the odd behavior of the girls continued and accusations kept increasing. The Salem witch hunt was under way and people were determined to not stop until they’ve found every last witch in Salem. (The Crucible by: Arthur…

The need for good is represented by the owl, which symbolizes Ultima. The symbolic value of the owl is seen early in the story when Tony calls it "Ultima's owl" (12). Tony is aware of the presence of the owl because he "heard the owl cry its warning" before the death of Lupito (14). This foreshadowing of events occurs throughout the book, and shows the magical powers Tony believed to belong to the owl and Ultima. Because of these powers Tony's life is very confusing and unstable. The owl also proves to be a savior to Antonio's family when it "pounced on the coyotes," while Ultima and Tony are helping Uncle Lucas (92). Tony realizes that in order to be successful, he must heed the warnings that come to him through nature, and his dreams. He learns that he must put himself in vulnerable positions, like the owl who risks it's life, to help others.…

The underlying truth is that yet a young and innocent child commonly endeavors to achieve the dreams of their parents, and Antonio is no exception. In Bless Me, Ultima, parents of Antonio, a six-year-old boy, invite Ultima, a curandera, to live with them. During her stay, Ultima sees Antonio internally struggling to find his destiny since his parents each wants him to choose only his or her path. Due to this, Ultima constantly advises Antonio to prepare him in deciding his destiny as he grows up. Throughout the novel, Rudolfo Anaya uses the juxtaposition between the unique characters in the Luna and Márez blood, thus indicating that a child’s identity is only chosen and found by the child, not his or her parents.…

Ultima's owl is a mysterious character that is talked about throughout Bless Me, Ultima. Often it is referred to by the antagonist Tenorio as a brujas tool. However it is a symbol of Ultima and her kindness, which is interesting since the owl is a symbol of witchcraft in Native American culture. This is probably where Tenorio founded his accusations. The owl is her “bond to the time and harmony of the universe” because here mentor, who was a wise and kind man, told here it was. The owl is a gateway of sorts for Ultima to connect to the spirit world. If the owl dies, so does Ultima.…

In chapter veintidos when Ultima is dying she says, "'Love life, and if despair enters your heart, look for me in the evenings when the wind is gentle and the owls sing in the hills. I shall be with you--"(Anaya 260). When a mentor leaves their student it is because they believe they have been taught as much as could be. Ultima died when Antonio had witnessed several deaths and had learned lessons about helping others, not interfering with man's fate, and to do good not evil. Also in chapter Veintidos Ultima says, "--I accept my death because I accepted to work for life--" (Anaya 260). This is one of Ultima's last teachings and these are the words which she leaves with Antonio to ponder on for the rest of his life. Her teaching is done as she sees he will be able to go on without…

Throughout "Bless Me, Ultima" there are numerous allusions to Antonio being, or becoming Christ. Such as in one of his dreams from the first half of the book, "It is neither! I shouted. I swung the dark robe of the priest over my shoulders then lifted my hands in the air. The mist swirled around me and sparks flew when I spoke. It is the presence of the river. Save us, my brothers cried and cowered at my words. I spoke to the presence of the river and it allowed my brothers to cross with their carpenter tools to build our castle on the hill." (Pg. 26) This symbolism of Antonio allowing his brothers to cross the river with their carpenter tools suggests that Antonio is not just a priest in his dream but Christ. Talking with the river to save the ones he loves who are carpenters.…
