Bless Me Ultima
Throughout "Bless Me, Ultima" there are numerous allusions to Antonio being, or becoming Christ. Such as in one of his dreams from the first half of the book, "It is neither! I shouted. I swung the dark robe of the priest over my shoulders then lifted my hands in the air. The mist swirled around me and sparks flew when I spoke. It is the presence of the river. Save us, my brothers cried and cowered at my words. I spoke to the presence of the river and it allowed my brothers to cross with their carpenter tools to build our castle on the hill." (Pg. 26) This symbolism of Antonio allowing his brothers to cross the river with their carpenter tools suggests that Antonio is not just a priest in his dream but Christ. Talking with the river to save the ones he loves who are carpenters.

With Antonio symbolizing Christ, there needs to be someone to offset him, someone such as the Devil. One such character is Ernie. Ernie, for no reason known to Antonio, dislikes him very much. "He has a witch to help him. " Ernie sneered". Ernie was still after me. I still didn't know why." The Devil does not like God or Christ because they over powered him. They were full of goodness, and the Devil could not understand this. Between Ernie and Antonio, there is a similar story. Ernie is not a "good" Christian like Antonio. Ernie picks fights just to fight, and once Antonio stood up to him and showed Ernie his power. "Then Ernie's arms snapped out and the football he was holding hit me full on my face. I instinctively struck out and felt my fist land on his chin." (Pg. 146) After this act of defiance against Ernie, Antonio stating that he would not be drug down by Ernie's bad ways, everyone had more respect for him, even Ernie. " No one teased me about Ultima after that. If I had been able to take on Ernie I guess they figured that I would fight anybody." (Pg. 147) This passage puts Antonio in a light as being able to defeat Ernie, or Christ defeating the Devil.

Bless Me Ultima, in both text and film, share many similarities and differences. The storyline develops as Ultima comes to live with the Marez y Luna family during the last of her days. Antonio, the young boy, witnesses the deaths of Lupitio and Narciso causing him to face the reality that everything living is everything that dies. The similarity throughout the book and movie, is that Antonio constantly struggles between choosing his mother’s wish for him to become a priest or becoming vaquero like the men on his father’s side of the family. Each of these choices were equally honorable. There is also an ongoing battle between good and evil in the village; Ultima, representing the good being, and the evil of Tenorio and his witch daughters. In the end, as in all good stories, good destroys evil and Antonio recognizes that change has brought him peace. He understands wisdom and has a better understanding of his reality.…

To take the scorpion metaphor deeper I think that El Patrón captures his prey much like a scorpion. He takes them in and like a scorpion he injects them with poison. In his case the poison is turning them into eejits and/or ruining their lives by never letting them go. El Patrón believed that he deserved his siblings lives so he takes others in return. The main element on my shield is a drop of poison coming from the scorpion tail. It represents El Patrón’s wrath that fuels his empire. The colors of my shield are black, Gray, red, and white. The dark red represents El Patrón’s rage, anger, leadership, longing, malice, and wrath. The black represents his power, death he caused, and pure evil. The used the gray to represent the poison and actually means isolation. The poison of El Patrón is often just separating the from the rest of the world. The gray is sitting on white which we all know stands for innocence and purity. The shield shows the buildup of innocent lives that El Patrón takes by “poisoning them”. The motto I used for El Patrón’s Empire is “Sus Vidas Son Mis Vidas”. In english this says “their lives are my lives”. Going back to the “stolen lives of his siblings” this represents their lives being…

“From my father and Ultima I had learned that the greater immortality is the freedom of man, and that freedom is best nourished by the noble expanse of land and air and pure, white sky” (Anaya, 228). Tony’s father then talks about the land possessing “a power that can fill a man with satisfaction” (Anaya, 229). Ultima adds on about the land giving faith for nature to grow and evolve. This means that with freedom and faith, you can evolve and grow. Consequently, Antonio comes to the realization that even though nature had a dark, mystical past, nature evolved and grew with faith and freedom.…

“Understanding come with life. As a man grows he sees life and death, he is happy and sad, and he works, plays, and meets people”, says Rudolfo Anaya, the author of Bless Me Ultima. In the novel, we are first introduced by Antonio to his childhood. Antonio’s mother is a staunch catholic while his father is the son of a vaquero. His father wants him to become a cowboy, however his mother wants him to become a priest. This is when Antonio begins to question his destiny. “Then maybe I do not have to be just Marez, or Luna, perhaps I can be both –“, said Antonio. (247) In chapter one, Ultima comes to live with the Marez family. Ultima is a curandera, a healer who uses folk remedies. Ultima is more like Antonios mentor. “I felt more attached…

Blood becomes the river. The human race dies and only the "she-goats and the he-goats" remain (176). The lake "cracked with laughter of madness" and the "ghosts stood and walked upon the shore" (120). Who dares dream such gruesome images? Only Antonio Marez. He argues with God and the Virgin Mary. He commutes with the dead; the dead asks him for blessings. Just who is this Tony person! You might not believe that this is only a seven year old kid, but he is the hero of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. Tony is valiant, and this courage sometimes reflects his curiously precocious nature. Precocious he is, he still is in constant mental ambivalence.

When I say Tony is brave, I don't mean that he fights demons or kill dragons, but rather that he stands for what he believe is right and he is not afraid to go to extreme measures to protect the people he love. He shows that he is a "man of the llano" when he "does[n't] run from a fight" even when confronted with Horse, the notorious bully (37). Tony also stands up against a mob for Florence; everyone wants to punish Florence for "not believing in God" (214) and Tony pushes the crowd away and refuses to give Florence the penance that Florence does not deserve. Although Tony knows that he will be given the "Indian torture" (214), he still speaks up for his friend. Anaya often presents Tony as a dependent character, never wanting to "be away from the protection of [his] mother" (51); in fact, he's so close to his mother that it seems that he's going through Oedipus's Complex. Anaya actually does this to increase the impact of Tony's bravery. One might expect Tony to stay in his undercover bushes when Tenorio is standing so close; however, when Tony hears that Tenorio knows the way to kill Ultima, the thought to warn Ultima supercedes his fear and encourages his legs to pick up and run home (255). At trying times, he "stood by Ultima" and "would have slashed out to protect Ultima" (138).

Oftentimes, Tony's…

In The Tattooed Soldier, Antonio is flooded with guilt as he carries on after the loss of his wife, Elena, and son, Carlos. The guilt is easily seen as Antonio travels by bus to San Cristobal. The author writes, “He vomited out the window, wept into his hands, pounded a fist into his thigh. I am a coward. I am a coward. He had failed to summon the courage to jump from the bus in the square in San Cristobal and confront the man who had killed his wife and son“ (Tobar 19). Antonio is sickened with guilt as he is reminded that his family is gone and he did not stand up against the man who murdered his family. The sight of Longoria reminds Antonio that his family is gone and that he is still living, leading Antonio to feel much guilt. Alternately, El Casper is burdened…

In the first dream, the woman, who turns out to be Ultima, buried Antonio’s afterlife. This foreshadows Antonio’s true identity being revealed by Ultima right before her death, as she asks Antonio to follow in her footsteps. In another dream Antonio hears his brothers in the woods saying, “ Oh our sweet baby, we are coming home to you. We who had been beyond the land of our father’s dream; we who have traveled west until we were in the east, we are coming home to you” (61). This foreshadows the return of his three older brothers from the war. But yet in another dream of Antonio’s, when the three older brothers cannot cross the river, it foreshadows that once they return from the war they will leave…

Throughout Antonio’s life, the religion he was born into that has helped shaped his life good or bad is Catholicism. Such as, when Antonio was so lost in his life, he looked to his religion to give him guidance. “I hoped that in a few years the taking of the first holy communion would bring me understanding” (74). Antonio was feeling so out of place even his family was, after Eugene and Leon left them. Andrew help Antonio realize that he and his brother couldn’t fulfill their parents dream, it had to be Antonio.
