Bless me Ultima, Good Vs. Evil.
GOOD VS. EVIL = Maturity

Bless Me Ultima, a book by Rudolfo A. Anaya, is about a young boy named Antonio who comes of age through troubling ordeals throughout the book. He is aided in this journey by a curandera named Ultima, who teaches Tony many life lessons. Anaya uses animals to symbolize such as good and evil. Representing Ultima, he uses the owl, which serves as the good character, while the coyote represents evil, portrayed by Tenorio. The Golden Carp is a symbol of Tony's confused uncertainty toward religion and morality. Anaya's portrayal of these magical characteristics shapes Tony's ascent into manhood.

The need for good is represented by the owl, which symbolizes Ultima. The symbolic value of the owl is seen early in the story when Tony calls it "Ultima's owl" (12). Tony is aware of the presence of the owl because he "heard the owl cry its warning" before the death of Lupito (14). This foreshadowing of events occurs throughout the book, and shows the magical powers Tony believed to belong to the owl and Ultima. Because of these powers Tony's life is very confusing and unstable. The owl also proves to be a savior to Antonio's family when it "pounced on the coyotes," while Ultima and Tony are helping Uncle Lucas (92). Tony realizes that in order to be successful, he must heed the warnings that come to him through nature, and his dreams. He learns that he must put himself in vulnerable positions, like the owl who risks it's life, to help others.

Evil, on the other hand, is symbolized by coyotes and the character of Tenorio. Before Tenorio is involved in the story, there is no mention of the wickedness of the coyotes, but once he shows up, they're constantly on the side of evil. Tony refers to Tenorio's friends as a "ring of coyotes around him" (83). A different and unique perspective makes Tony stand out from the other characters in the story. Once an idea is planted into his mind, it remains there in his subconscious and dreams. Later in the story he

Bless Me Ultima, in both text and film, share many similarities and differences. The storyline develops as Ultima comes to live with the Marez y Luna family during the last of her days. Antonio, the young boy, witnesses the deaths of Lupitio and Narciso causing him to face the reality that everything living is everything that dies. The similarity throughout the book and movie, is that Antonio constantly struggles between choosing his mother’s wish for him to become a priest or becoming vaquero like the men on his father’s side of the family. Each of these choices were equally honorable. There is also an ongoing battle between good and evil in the village; Ultima, representing the good being, and the evil of Tenorio and his witch daughters. In the end, as in all good stories, good destroys evil and Antonio recognizes that change has brought him peace. He understands wisdom and has a better understanding of his reality.…

He thought that the river was going to be forever stained with Lupitos blood. He did not know if Lupito was going to go to heaven or hell. The boy also witnesses the death of the innocent Narsico. After the deaths he begin to wonder why God was not a forgiving god. He knows the Virgin Guandalupe would forgive Narciso but he did not know if God will. The virgin is the personification of the virtue of faith, devotion, and forgiveness. He questioned why Narsico even had to die and he was so innocent. He also starts to wonder about sin and death. It is all so confusing to him and difficult to understand. Ultima’s healing powers helps Antonio not just physically but emotionally. Antonio runs home crying when he sees the death of Lupito and as he run he hears the owls cry, which right after he hears it, he loses his fear. In Native American culture the owl is seen as a protector, summoning spirit, or as a reincarnation of the virtuous. The owl sends out warning calls that means that danger is near. It also protects Ultima from Tenorio by blinding him in one eye. Antonio did not understand the meaning of the owl and why it was always around until chapter twenty two when he realizes that the owl is Ultima’s soul. “It is the owl that sends out the spirit of the old witch,” says Tenorio. (256) Tenorio kills the owl and Ultima also…

An important motif in “Bless Me, Ultima” are Antonio’s dreams. His dreams foreshadow major events and make him question his beliefs, especially revolving around religion. The dream that Antonio had subsequently following his witnessing of Tenorio killing Narciso, best shows why Anaya corporates them in his novel. In this dream Antonio’s guilt and young principles take over. Evil, revenge, and sin lead the end of the world as Antonio views it. At the bottom of page 176 it reads, “A new sun to shine its good light upon a new earth.” (Anaya, Page #176). Based on this text and knowledge from reading the book, we can conclude that after the earth has been destroyed and the golden carp swallows all that is good and evil, a new world is produced.…

Blood becomes the river. The human race dies and only the "she-goats and the he-goats" remain (176). The lake "cracked with laughter of madness" and the "ghosts stood and walked upon the shore" (120). Who dares dream such gruesome images? Only Antonio Marez. He argues with God and the Virgin Mary. He commutes with the dead; the dead asks him for blessings. Just who is this Tony person! You might not believe that this is only a seven year old kid, but he is the hero of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. Tony is valiant, and this courage sometimes reflects his curiously precocious nature. Precocious he is, he still is in constant mental ambivalence.

When I say Tony is brave, I don't mean that he fights demons or kill dragons, but rather that he stands for what he believe is right and he is not afraid to go to extreme measures to protect the people he love. He shows that he is a "man of the llano" when he "does[n't] run from a fight" even when confronted with Horse, the notorious bully (37). Tony also stands up against a mob for Florence; everyone wants to punish Florence for "not believing in God" (214) and Tony pushes the crowd away and refuses to give Florence the penance that Florence does not deserve. Although Tony knows that he will be given the "Indian torture" (214), he still speaks up for his friend. Anaya often presents Tony as a dependent character, never wanting to "be away from the protection of [his] mother" (51); in fact, he's so close to his mother that it seems that he's going through Oedipus's Complex. Anaya actually does this to increase the impact of Tony's bravery. One might expect Tony to stay in his undercover bushes when Tenorio is standing so close; however, when Tony hears that Tenorio knows the way to kill Ultima, the thought to warn Ultima supercedes his fear and encourages his legs to pick up and run home (255). At trying times, he "stood by Ultima" and "would have slashed out to protect Ultima" (138).

Oftentimes, Tony's…

In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” the use of symbolism is used heavily throughout the story. Marquez uses symbolism by giving an old man unique, angel like qualities while she also uses a spider woman to represent an evil, sin-like creature. Symbolism is also used among the townspeople, who represent a greedy cluster of humans who always want more, no matter the consequences. The use of syntax is used throughout the story because each of Marquez’s sentences are used in a creative manner and explain each character very well. In the short story, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” the use of symbolism, syntax, and greed are used among characters to represent the good qualities and evil qualities a human can possess over the course…

For instance, Samuel and Tony were fishing and Sam told him the story of the magical golden carp, “The river was full of dangers to the new fish. So he went to the other gods and told them he chose to be turned into a carp and swim in the river where he could take care of his people. The gods agreed... they made him very big and colored him the color of gold. And they made him the lord of all the waters of the valley” (Anaya 74). The pagan god chose to sacrifice himself for his followers, as Jesus died on the stake for his. The golden carp gives Antonio alternative to the religion he is raised on. Additionally, God proves his love for humanity and forgiveness of human sins by ascension into heaven and acquiring eternal life and salvation through faith in Jesus (BBC). The water of the secluded lake is heaven for the followers of pagan ideals, when they die they join their god in the lake for eternity. Similar to the idea of heaven in the afterlife in Christianity. As Tony was having an epiphany about God a huge fish shot out of the calm water of the river, “The evil mouth of the black bass was open and red. Its eyes were glazed with hate as it hung in the air surrounded by churning water...” (Anaya 105). As the black bass rips out of the calm water, Antonio thinks about God and sin, this being a coherent symbol of evil. The theme of good versus evil is transposed from the human and…

Animal Imagery is used throughout the play especially in Act 1. Iago makes almost all of the imageries. He uses this imagery to make himself feel better and to also downgrade people he hates. In Act 1 where he is talking to Desdemona’s father he describes the relationship between his daughter and Othello as animals having sex. This is used to provoke the father and make him angry, Iago tells him "daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs."(Act 1 scene 1). Iago is determined to expose Othello for the beast that he is by saying "bringing this monstrous birth to light"(Act 1 scene 3) and this use of imagery is the starting point of Iago’s evil plan to overthrow Othello. As we see later on Othello even starts using animal imagery himself.…

Inside Othello’s mind, there is a constant battle between the effect of Iago’s manipulation and the truth Othello yearns to hear. He even became a monster of “black vengeance” after being exposed to Iago’s rhetorical abilities; this monster chose Iago’s lies over the truth until it is revealed by Emilia (3.3.462). By revealing this truth and disobeying Iago’s words to cease speaking, Emilia becomes a symbol of honesty that mirrors that of the one inside Othello’s conscience (5.2.226). On the other hand, Iago’s attempt to stop Emilia replicates that of the deceit in Othello’s mind; his wife’s betrayal allows them to symbolize and demonstrate each side of the battle within Othello. Because Emilia betrays Iago, together they symbolize the constant internal battle in Othello’s…
