From the Author Assignment Hi my names Rudolfo Anaya, and I am the author of the story Bless Me, Ultima, and I would like to answer some commonly asked questions about this story. I will answer questions numbered 8 and 10 today. First, Antonio believes that the best god will be a woman because He thinks that she would forgive easier. This matters to Antonio because at this point in his life he realized that his own three brothers are major sinners, and spend a lot of their time at the town’s whorehouse. He then has a dream were he talks to god and god says he will not forgive his brothers, and then he talks to the virgin Mary and she says she will forgive his brothers. This shows that woman are more forgiving thus leading to Antonio’s conclusion that woman would make a better god. Now to questions 10, I believe Ultima is a witch, but a good witch. Just because she assumes the title of a witch or bruja does not make her evil by nature. Ultima uses her power for good and healing instead of bad things like the things Tenerio’s daughters engage in. The proof behind my conclusion that Ultima is a witch is that when Tenerio came to the Marez household to test her, Ultima failed the test. She had to walk through a door with a blessed cross pinned into it, and as she was walking through it her owl swooped down and attacked Tenerio, and in that distracting moment the pin fell and that’s when Ultima walked through it. So she ended up failing the test and that’s how she is known as a

In Bless Me, Ultima, the narrator is a young boy named Antonio who lives in a Spanish-speaking community. Anaya also incorporates many Spanish words such as “llano” to set the tone. Furthermore, instead of stating facts like Lee chooses to do, Anaya’s style goes from idea to idea, blending together with seemingly no plan of where it is going. The entire novel consists of Antonio’s river of thoughts, including his dreams and flashbacks. Along the way, Anaya adds many seemingly extraneous details, but later they will come into play. Anaya’s style also includes many flashbacks that will foreshadow events that are to come later. In Antonio’s early flashback, Anaya’s writing style is clearly shown when he flashes back to when he was…

From the Middle Ages until the 1700s, a fevered witch craze was spread throughout Europe. These witches were isolated, persecuted and when found, tortured and consequently killed. With most of the population concentrated in southeastern Europe, over 100,000 witches were tried. It was believed that these individuals practiced black magic and were associated with the Devil, but a single fact becomes clear when studying the witch craze and that is that there is a certain type of individual that was singled out as a witch. The majority of of accused witches were female(Witchcraft Statistics, doc 2) and mostly over 50 years old(Witchcraft Statistics doc 3). The witch craze concentrated on elderly women who more often than not were from a low social class (Witchcraft Statistics, doc 1.). A combination of religious beliefs, social prejudices and cultural precepts helped heighten the already rampant witch persecution throughout Europe.…

The author in this article questions the gender of god in the face of the onslaught of the question of the female divine; the varied criticisms and the study of the scriptures where God declares to Moses “I am that I am.” The article goes on to defend the male divine in that it argues from religious studies, scriptures and published studies the male nature of God from a Christian’s standpoint. Taking on certain criticisms and arguing against them point by point, the article is a reaction to the threat of women’s liberation and the wave of studies on the female divine. The author of this article goes on to reiterate the actions taken on by other religions to fall into a certain political correctness when discussing god, removing his gender which the author believes is confusing. Since the establishment of early Christianity as God is seen as the “Holy father” and Jesus as His “only Son”, the author of this article argues that God has no gender and that even with the male divine argument, God exists outside sexual differentiation. The attributes of the Male divine in God is due to the fatherhood personified in human worship of 'Him' and the female attributes come from the “female acts” that God is seen to perform according to the scriptures. Even then, the question of God's gender in this article while 'made invalid' due to God's “motherhood” still pronounces the “male divine” being that 'God' even from a Christian viewpoint due to the Jewish patriarchal nature of the Old Testament being that Jewish Theology is heavy on male transcendence. Judaism sees patriarchy as the mandate of giving life and of making reality - women need the male to “be heavy with child”, to look after the family, to carry the line from generation to generation. Thompson however argues that while this is so, the Male Divine is just a manifestation of the “wholeness” that is “God the Holy Spirit” and “Spirits” do not inhibit a corporeal body so gender does not limit them. The Dvine is…

In literature, many authors expressed their opinion on this idea. Most authors state that at the time, “women were lower than men in the social hierarchy” (Karlsen). For example, “According to this opinion, that women were evil, whorish, deceitful, extravagant, angry, vengeful, and of course, insubordinate and proud” (Karlsen 69) demonstrates how women were thought of during the time of the trials and prosecutions. Men were thought to be the better, more intelligent sex and to be servers of God, which is quite the opposite of women.…

Throughout "Bless Me, Ultima" there are numerous allusions to Antonio being, or becoming Christ. Such as in one of his dreams from the first half of the book, "It is neither! I shouted. I swung the dark robe of the priest over my shoulders then lifted my hands in the air. The mist swirled around me and sparks flew when I spoke. It is the presence of the river. Save us, my brothers cried and cowered at my words. I spoke to the presence of the river and it allowed my brothers to cross with their carpenter tools to build our castle on the hill." (Pg. 26) This symbolism of Antonio allowing his brothers to cross the river with their carpenter tools suggests that Antonio is not just a priest in his dream but Christ. Talking with the river to save the ones he loves who are carpenters.…
