Biography Of Evangelizing Japan Through English Teaching
Evangelizing Japan through English Teaching”

I am Rizalinda Rafano, a dentist by profession in the Philippines and an English missionary teacher in Japan. Serving people as a dentist is truly inspiring and rewarding to me; however, serving the Lord is incomparably glorying that absolutely completes me. Therefore, I will not get tired working with the Lord to reach out and tell to the unbelievers His saving grace. It is indeed such great achievement and priceless wealth to see people get freed, healed and alive again in the love of God.

I came to Japan not as a dentist, but as a Missionary English teacher in 2004 for Hallelujah International School, a church based school of Midorino Christ Church. However, since I did not have TESOL then,

He has not heard anything about me and the mission that I do in Japan after TESOL. I am a direct missionary of God’s organization: God-my sender, Jesus-my personal mentor and the Holy Spirit-my power and strength, the only help I have to persist on doing God’s mission or mandate. I have tried to connect with some mission organizations before, but they all discouraged me to go to Japan for financial reasons. I had enough disappointments…. that I trust very few people only. I live to trust and obey God only and not any person—so the bottom line and the beginning of everything is, this is God’s mission not mine. I trusted and depended on God to lead me to a place where He wanted me to go and use me in anyway and in everyway He pleases me to do for His Glory and Honor.

I would like to take advantage of this time not only to thank Sir Sam for the timeless and boundless legacy he has given me in order for me to thrive and prosper in the mission field of evangelizing Japan through English teaching. He has no knowledge about this, that ever since I came back to Japan in Nov. 2015 to engage in mission, I already have considered him my— “big brother”— to be one of the very few significant persons or foundations of my missionary work here in Japan—to make God’s salvation be known in Japan.

In his book Share Jesus Without Fear, William Fay lays out an easy and attainable way for one to reach people for Christ. A former mobster, and prostitution house owner, Fay says that if “God can take somebody like me and change him, he can take anybody in your life and change him as well.”1 In an easy to understand, comprehensive way, Fay shows how to overcome your fears and witness to those who are lost. By breaking down the six most common excuses one uses not to evangelize, he shows how to overcome the roadblocks that we place on ourselves. For instance, one of the fears he addresses is the fear of rejection. Fay points out that one must realize that this is not a contest. He says, “success is sharing your faith and living your life for Jesus Christ. It has nothing to do with bringing anyone to the Lord.”2 He goes on to say that it takes someone 7.6 times of hearing the Gospel before they give their lives to Christ. Just because you may have been the 3rd, does not mean that it didn’t make a difference. Throughout the book Fay lays out questions to ask, verses to go to, and objections that you will encounter, to lay out a way for you to share your faith with others without excuse.…

I gladly accept my call to serve in the California Rancho Cucamonga Mission. I have been super excited thinking about where I will go to serve and teach the gospel. Thoughts have been running through my mind about how my friends and I have received our mission calls in the past couple of weeks and the similarity of the sons of Mosiah in the beginning of their missionary years. A good righteous group of friends going to serve the people and bring them unto Christ. Thinking about the idea of serving and wanting to be an excellent missionary like Ammon and the other sons of Mosiah has made my heart leap for joy. The scripture Mosiah 28:3 has been running through my head as well (3) Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared…

In the early years of the Meiji Japan entered the international community and began to industrialize, modernize and urbanize. These were hard times for Buddhism in Japan, as it became the subject of a critique and censorism and also a symbol of corruption or decadence in opposite to Japan's need for scientific and technological development. As a group of modern Buddhist leaders emerged, they agreed that to fit the new, nationalistic policy of the Japanese government, Buddhism is in need of revitalization. Before that Westerns treated Japanese Buddhism as superstitious, institutional or ritual-based religion and such ideals directly influenced the creation of the new tradition. The result came to be known as the New Buddhism (shin bukkyo), shaped and promoted in reference to West.…

Other missionaries have wrote to me to be prepared, as for some Hawaiians will not easily convert, while others will in a snap, now I understand. I am writing you this letter and I have stayed here for about 6 months now. When I first got her I realized soon after that no Hawaian could read the bible because they couldn’t read or understand the english language, which is when we realized we needed to create a language that the Hawaiians could understand. Twelve letters were selected for the Hawaiians to learn and we pressed the first Hawaiian bible so the hawaiians could now learn. Before we came into contact with the Hawaiians I do not believe they had a written language and I hope these selections of the twelve letters will help them communicate with us now. I think our interaction with Hawaiians are slowly starting to modernize their society and I hope it has larger impacts in the…

If I had the opportunity to meet one person in the world for a day, I would want to meet Pastor Wani who works in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. The Nuba mountains are a very dangerous place for Christians now due to Sudanese government bombers. The bombers often attack churches, hospitals, schools, and homes; people of the Nuba mountains are constantly seeking shelter at the sound of a plane’s engine. Pastor Wani has kept his faith and hope as he strives to protect his people, and continue loving people and spreading the gospel. Pastor Wani was captured by the Sudanese government soldiers earlier this year, but he was able to escape. This evangelist and the people of the Nuba mountains continue to press on through the bombings and torture they…

the reason why Japan was able to modernize its industry, military and government to the point where they were able to compete with the west, while the rest of Asia lagged behind was due to the fact that they were flexible. They realized that in order to become more powerful than the west they needed to modernize and get their technology, industry, military and government up to date so they could improve and become more advanced than the other world powers. They knew that if they continued living as they were (under their strict and ancient ways of life and traditions) they were not going to become anything significant, but instead end up defeated and ruled by the west (who they despised).…

Buddhism was spread to China through the trade routes that went through Central Asia and Southeast Asia. A large portion of the Indian merchants were Buddhists. The Buddhist bodhisattva was portrayed as an enlightened saint for the merchants. The bodhisattva would be there for the merchants to protect them from danger and would give them courage for their long voyages. Since the Buddhists monks were not there with the Buddhist merchants on their voyages the bodhisattva was there to protect them. The bodhisattva the merchants worshipped was named Avalowitesvara. The Guanyin was first familiarized in the 5th century by a ruler after a miracle cure had occurred. At that time statues of the bodhisattva started to appear and the statues…

The two main religions of the Japanese people are Shintoism and Zen Buddhism. While they both play major roles in Japanese culture today, Shintoism is as old as the Japanese culture itself while Zen Buddhism was imported from the mainland in the sixth century. Zen Buddhism teaches that everyone is an enlightened being, but we have yet to comprehend that. It also teaches to take away anything that is unnecessary in our life and leave only the bare essentials. The main idea that is thought is that one must be in harmony with nature and society to lead a fulfilled and purified life. The ideas of Zen Buddhism can be seen in Japanese architecture, gardens and the Japanese tea ceremony.…
