Theory U is a leadership philosophy based on connecting to the source of our authentic self and that which wants to emerge through us. It is a new social field theory that equips us with a new consciousness and a new collective leadership capacity to meet challenges in a more conscious, intentional, and strategic way. The development of such a capacity will allow us to create a future of greater possibility.
According to Theory U, the cause of our collective failure is that we are blind to the deeper dimension of leadership and transformational change. We know very little about inner dimensions and very seldom are specific techniques applied to enhance management performance from the inside out. This “blind spot” exists not only in our collective leadership but also in our everyday social interactions.
When we apply the Theory U, we need to shift from reactive responses and quick fixes on a symptoms level to generative responses that address the systemic root issues. In order to move from a reactive field to generative field, we must embark on a journey. When embarking on a journey, it is important for us to consistently performing the 3 (three) instruments, i.e. the open mind, the open heart, and the open will.
Open mind is based on our ability to access our intellectual, type of intelligence. This allows us to see with fresh eyes, to deal with the objective figures and facts around us. The enemy blocks the gate to the open mind is the voice of judgment (VOJ). Once we are being able to shut down the VOJ, we will be able to make progress in accessing our real creativity and presence. The second capacity is the open heart, relates to our ability to access our emotional intelligence (EQ); that is, our capacity to empathize with others, to tune in to different contexts, and to put ourselves into someone else’s shoes.
