Benefits of Delegating
BENEFITS OF DELEGATING MANAGEMENT TASKS

Delegation is the assignment of authority and responsibility to another person to carry out specific activities. However the person who delegated the work remains accountable for the outcome of the delegated work. Before we start doing any delegation there are a few things we need to consider: • Is there someone else that can do the job? • Is there a training need which must be met as soon as possible? • Is there enough time to delegate effectively? • Does the task provide an opportunity to grow and develop my team player’s skills? • Is the delegation beneficial to the team’s objectives?
Delegation can be beneficial to the team’s objectives by: • Better distribution of work through the group • Creating more involvement • Getting task done more efficiently

To delegate successfully we have to: • Identify a suitable person for the task. • Prepare the person. Explain the task clearly. Make sure that we are understood. Leave room in the task description for ingenuity / initiative. • Make sure the person has the necessary authority to do the job properly. • Keep in touch with the person for support and monitoring progress. Do not get to close. Accept alternative approaches. • Focus on results. Concern ourselves with what is accomplished, rather than detailing how the work should be done. • Build motivation and commitment. Discuss how success will impact financial rewards, future opportunities, informal recognition, and other desirable consequences. Provide recognition where deserved.

Delegation is a very helpful aid for succession planning, personal development - and seeking and encouraging promotion. It's how we grow in the

Step one of any effective delegation or any task is to have a clear and concise understanding of the objective or mission. You can’t expect to tell people to go from point A to point Z if they don’t fully understand the scope and limitations of the task. Imagine also being told to bake a cake then being reprimanded because it’s not a double stacked, low sugar, chocolate frosted cake. A manager can’t delegate a basic block of instructions and expect a finished detailed task. How many of us have been on the receiving end of bad instruction and vague guidance. No doubt that feeling of confusion and vagueness transferred to the work ethic and outcome of that mission. A leader in order to have a successful outcome must master the fine art of effective communication and ensure that his desired end results are understood by all.…

Delegation involves you realizing that even though the drill wasn't done your way, you need to let go in order for your team and yourself to grow for the better. You might even ask yourself “Will it be done as good as the way I’ve done it?”. Nobody is perfect. Managing the different personalities of course requires patience. The managers in my department delegated tasks appropriately according to the skill levels of the staff. According to the text, Management: The New Competitive Landscape by Thomas S. Bateman and Scott Snell, " Delegation is perhaps the most fundamental feature of management, because it entail getting work done through others." They were tops at planning and organizing. As the needs of the company struggled for survival and evolved, new tasks needed to be done, managers would lay out the procedures to achieve the required results, ascertain who was best qualified to get the job done, make sure that employee received any additional training needed and re-distribute work loads or hire on additional staff as necessary. These changes gave the company more employees trained on proprietary duties, made the employees feel more valuable to the company, gave the employees job security and insured the flow of the work went on uninterrupted. The employees were stimulated which brought their best work performance.…
