The Independence Blue Cross Nurses for Tomorrow Scholarship will afford me to the opportunity to reach my professional goals while setting an example and creating a better future for other nurses of tomorrow. Professionally, I desire the doctorate of nursing practice degree to create change in how nurses are educated. I have large ideas that this degree is helping me refine and learn how to implement. One of these ideas is the creation of a better educational path for individuals that would have traditionally become associate degree nurses. This new path will have the potential to reduce the health disparities faced by these students while creating the bachelor’s prepared nursing workforce.…
It’s amazing how much time is given to elder care but without it many older adults would suffer. With the number of older Americans growing there is an increase need for care but the appropriate funding is required on both ends financially and more support and education is need among staff and administration to actually supply the proper essentials to the aging population. Being a CNA goes beyond caring for sick patients and keeping their patients healthy in a variety of setting as Ai-Jen Poo mentioned in the audio interview incorporating those attributes of dignity and value into the work and allowing the geriatric population to be surrounded by love care and connection is vital to getting older. Nursing aides are the backbone of these health…

My personal nursing mission statement is changing and developing as my career advances, however, one core piece will remain constant. I will strive to provide the best, safest, most ethical and compassionate nursing care that I can for all patients and family members with whom I come in contact. I began my post-high school academic career as an accounting major. I enjoyed the challenge of manipulating a report until I had balanced. I thought I had found my calling. As my first semester was nearing an end, I found myself contemplating the thought of sitting behind a desk all day. I wondered if I would find fulfillment in this work as a career? The more I pondered this thought, the more I realized that this was not the right career path for me. I saw images of the medical assistant program in the catalog at the school where I was attending. I could not shake the thought of the medical field for a profession. I attained my medical assistant degree and worked in the field for 10 years. The longer I worked, the more I realized that there was more that I wanted to do, but my current degree restricted me from going further. I researched nursing school programs and selected one with a night/weekend program that would allow me to continue working full-time during my studies. I have a family that I needed to continue to provide for and this seemed to be the best fit. My nursing school decision was fortified when I was selected for an award by the nursing faculty from all four semesters for excellence in the clinical setting. After graduation, I began my nursing career working as a case manager for orthopedic worker’s compensation patients. During this time I gained critical knowledge of the importance of clear documentation, the ever-changing requirements of insurance companies and an extra measure of compassion for…

The domino effect was at its best today. One six year old patient started crying after the injection. The five year old patient in the room next to him started crying when I walked over to the chair. The 9 year old patient getting walked back by the assistant started walking with hesitation and the hygiene patient started crying right before fluoride application. This was just another wonderful day in the pedo clinic in dental school over eight years ago. As crazy as that day sounds, I remember going home at the end of the day of a pedo rotation smiling, laughing and in a good mood. I recall my husband telling me that I was my happiest at school during my pedo rotations.…
During the summer I worked at a nursing home to gain some experience in the healthfield. Working as a certified nursing assistant really helped me grow and it is one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had, it also was very challenging at times. As I said before I struggle with anxiety, but working as a nursing assistant pushed me to overcome some of the fears I had of communicating. I learned really quick when working in a nursing home you strongly need the ability to have good communication skills because without it you can’t communicate with the charge nurses, the residents or the other C.N.A’s. Everyday that I worked there I used different forms of communications such as body language which I learned says a lot about what a person is feeling.…

Nursing is a second career for me. It is one I have approached gradually, over a long period of time. I might have chosen it as a first career if I had been a better student when I entered college, or had people in my life who were involved in healthcare careers when I was growing up. As it was, I had a longstanding interest in health and the human body, but nursing seemed very foreign, and the idea of touching strangers made me uncomfortable.…
My most rewarding achievement was becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) this past month. My younger years were always spent in a nursing home or a group home for disabled adults. Both grandmothers were CNA’s at the time and was always working. They are both still currently there working, hard as ever, they are in their sixties and plan to retire soon. I remember how cool it was to follow grandma around while she works, it still is. I actually work with with my grandma, it can be somewhat annoying. She has been working there for thirty years now, so I grew helping.…
While there are numerous similarities between Certified Nurse Assistants and Registered Nurses, Certified Nurse Assistance’s are willing to accept more exertion. Although, they work in the same work industry and have major responsibilities and duties that are similar CNA’s makes Registered Nurses job easier than it should be. A Certified Nursing Assistant is very crucial to the survival of people who are in need being a Certified Nursing is not an easy task to work in this profession, you need to be emotionally, physically, and mentally very strong. While Registered Nurses have an advantage of not doing as much as they should because they’re in a higher position than a Certified Nurse Assistant. The main priority for both roles as nurses is to make sure the residents get the basic care they need.…
When you ask a child, “What do you want to be when you grow up”, you tend to get a different answer each time. This was not the case with me! For as long as I can remember I said, without hesitation” I will be a nurse, I want to help others”. So it came with no surprise that I graduated from Nursing School in 1993. In 1996 my family moved to the United States, it took me a few years to get my nurses license here, but I never gave up. While I was going through the process of obtaining my nurses license I started working as a nursing assistant. In 2000 I was able to earn my registered nurse license in Maryland. In 2012 I injured my right shoulder at work. To date I’m still not able to use my right arm for much of anything. With that I have come to the…
