Kurt Mitchell 2013 Accomplishments
The year has come to an end and it’s been a fantastic year. I’ve achieved and experienced things a typical 17 year old doesn’t really get the chance to do. Last year, when I turned 16. I immediately started looking for a job. I eventually found one. It wasn’t the ideal job from my perspective, but it was a job from which I could gain experience. At one point I took on a second job as well at 16 years old. By managing those two jobs I gained time management skills and most importantly, learned about being responsible. For the summer I had to cancel all of my social plans because of the two jobs I had. I worked one job from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. then the other job from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Those jobs prepared me for the job I currently have, working at BNY Mellon for Terence Law. I have only been here for at least three months and I have gained knowledge I didn’t have prior to these three months. When I first started working here, I had never worked for a company like BNY Mellon or knew what it was like to work in the business world. I always had a passion to work in the business world and I am deeply and sincerely appreciative of the opportunity presented to me in 2013.
My first week here I met some of my co-workers and we introduced ourselves and got to know each other. The next week I was given a workspace, computer and phone. I was told what my responsibilities were for this job and things I have to do on a daily basis. I had no problems doing the majority of them after learning. I just had one problem which was answering the phone. As I wasn’t really taught how to answer a phone in the business world so I had struggled completing that task. After a week I caught on to answering the phone by listening to my peers around me. I’ve learned many things since I started working here. I learned to do call reports, overnight mailings, outside messenger coordination,

Previous to this, I was the Director of Human Resources for a dot com called All Outdoors in Traverse City, MI. Although my title was HR, I wore many hats and worked in each department of the organization. This was perhaps one of the best jobs ever. We had a creative "team" environment. I helped build the company from the ground up but,…

The most essential details are that I am very dedicated to whatever I do. As I was given a lot of work on my first day, I was hesitant in saying that I was overwhelmed. I was worried to tell my coworker that I needed help, so I continued to work. I continued doing my job for hours, until finding out that I wasted my time, as I did it all wrong.…

Before starting my college education, I worked for over 6 years at Mitchell & Ness, a multi-million dollar retail clothing company and store in Philadelphia, extensively in their inventory department. I spent time during the year working with our various warehouse managers to investigate the root cause of inventory adjustments. Working in a position that required attention to detail further taught me ways to improve my problem-solving skills and give me a change to work independently as well as in a team environment. Being able to grow with that company from working on their retail sales floor to their corporate office gave me a full view of the company’s day to day operations and gave me a better perspective on work.…

I spent the end of May and beginning of June applying for any activity job or volunteer opportunity that held my interest. I spent hours preparing for interviews, writing lengthy letters and internally panicking at every ring of the phone. in June I started my first job at the Hebron Carnival, and I could not have been more excited. I promised myself that I would work my hardest to make the carnival a better place than when I arrived. I also was accepted by the volunteer program at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and began work there every Monday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that was the most educational job I have ever had the pleasure of working at.Also in June I applied to work at Azar Eye Institute and received a position there. I worked there Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7 to 5:30. even after balancing my workload I was informed that I got a job volunteering at the library; which I did Monday and Thursday afternoons, and I also got a job working with children and animals at the Pemberton nature camp. Five jobs for a 15-year-old without a license sounds overwhelming, and it was. However, I loved every minute of it. I liked being part of the team, I liked being relied on by my fellow staff members, and most of all I liked having a…

I started working at fifteen years old. I have had a few jobs over the past 11 years, but my current place of employment is the worst one I have ever had. I worked in a welding shop for 7 years. I then got a job working in the plants for Apache Industrial. We get to do a lot of different things which is why I wanted this job. My first day on my new job couldn’t have come easier for me. Exercising before work kept my blood flowing through my body. Doing what my parents told me before they left work, helped me become productive. I felt well prepared, focused, and motivated. The first thing my boss had me do was work the cash register. I was good at math in high school so I thought counting money would be easy for me. When I was working at the register, I learned how to operate it with a breeze. I was quick moving my hands, picking up money, putting money in the register, and swiping credit cards. I remember one customer that I had to help said, “Are you new here?” after I gave his money to him. Of course I responded with politeness, “Yes sir.” Then he said, “You are fast on that register!” Once he said that, I couldn’t ask for a better start to my job. I felt so good to get customer feedback on how I was doing. After the register, my boss immediately had me start cutting food from the cold bar. The cold bar had 16 different types of candy and fruit in there. As soon as my boss told me what to do I was right on it. The first thing I had to do was get the candy from the…

Yesterday was 5th of June, the first day of the ESL class and the first day of my job, what a bad coincident! Anyway after ESL class I went to work. I was familiar with the office and the workers because it was my brother’s office and my sister, who I have to sit in her place, was working there. I had visited the guy who was responsible of training me before he was amazing but I found him a little bit serious. He started to explain about the program that I had to work with. Everything was new, the files, the vocabulary that they use, and the computer program that I hadn’t worked with before. It wasn’t difficult but for the first day it was confusing I tried to take a note and memories the place of every files and invoices. Sometimes I made mistake but he was checking them and corrected them. He used to work with my sister who her English was better than me so he tried to make me like her in one day. After entering the numbers and prices in the computer he taught me to order the files by date. It was easy but I have to be careful. Any how I worked there till4:30 and then went home. What a busy day! The day before there was nothing to do and now there were a lot. I didn’t like to work there at first I took it for granted but after coming back home I thanked God because I had a job that I was looking for it more than 5 months.…
