AP English Reflection Essay
Earning a 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam was my most memorable experience in English. The test required three hours of multiple choice questions and timed essays, and it left me feeling both exhausted and validated. While passing the test was a serious accomplishment, it was not an isolated act. Much of my growth and success came before the exam, rather than after it. I attribute my score to a year of hard work and learning in my AP English class, which greatly enriched my life.
My biggest accomplishment in AP English was strengthening my essay writing skills. As I practiced analyzing passages and writing essays in only forty minutes, I watched my writing turn from being competent to more eloquent. Initially, this shortened time frame posed a significant challenge for me. In the past, I had spent days on editing and rewording my essays, but while preparing for the AP test, I no longer had that luxury. Instead, I worked to fine-tune my word choice and analyzing skills so I did not need additional time. Through bimonthly vocabulary tests,

I was particularly intrigued by the use of ethos, pathos, and logos in persuading others, so I began to incorporate these techniques into my own writing and speaking. Appealing to an audience’s emotions, I learned, was something I enjoyed and did successfully. This has become a large part of my writing experience—I enjoy poetry, persuasive writing, and even heartfelt conversations that allow me to express my feelings and connect with others. Outside of this technique, I learned that I gravitate towards longer sentences, academic diction, and subtle sarcasm. Through my self-exploration in AP English, I solidified my voice and became more comfortable with writing. My unique style helped me pass the AP test, and it has been useful this year as I take AP English Literature and continue to write and speak in my everyday

After a year of focused work in English 250, I feel that I have developed the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in multiple ways. My strengths as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the material we had this semester. I ask you, what is a journey? Is it something we merely physically embark on or somewhat more? Well, those who say a journey is simply physical are too naive to realise the existence of imaginative journeys. An imaginative journey is explored through speculation to come to a deeper understanding. An imaginative journey, may be one you read, see, think or relive and can often result in an individual finding a change, proving that without imagination there can be no change.…

The blur of blue caught my eye and I watch it bellow down the street relentlessly swallowing people and children, and then fading into the hazy distance. Another breed of the same species comes careening down the opposite side of the street, it’s screeching tires skid across the miserable cracks of cement, suddenly halting to a dramatic stop. The metallic fiend exhales and shudders, impatiently waiting to select the next poor soul for consumption. Its mouth opens wide with a deep sounding hiss, beckoning me forward with a breath of steamy air. The air is stale and it forces my eyes to cry. To escape I attempt to rush forward but a jolt of force sends me crashing into a fortified wall of steel. The tribute I am carrying in my left hand is instantly relinquished as a result of the crash and I scramble on the floor for a minute before retrieving it. I solemnly stare at the crumpled dollar bill I hold between my fingers for I know this spoiled hell of a machine will never accept such lowly currency!…

The English III AP (or AP( English Language and Composition) course objectives are to help students become “skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts” and to help students become “skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes” (The College Board, AP( English Course Description, May 2007, May 2008, p. 6). Students are expected to read critically, think analytically, and communicate clearly both in writing and speech, which form the “basis for academic and professional communication.” The purpose of this course is to emphasize “expository, analytical, and argumentative writing” based on selected readings…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

As shown in my final products, my ability to convey a message through my writing has gotten stronger. My persuasive essay, for example, was able to convince those with opposing views by using information and inferencing how it would affect everyone in a negative manner. Also, in my cultural identity essay I was able to effectively describe and define my culture and how the combination of my parents’ distinctive cultures became a unique one entirely. Previously in my writing I do not think I was able to efficiently convey a message to my audience like I do after this…

One of my more enriching experiences occurred during my freshman year of high school. For years, I strove for straight A's, and for years I received them. Over time I constructed a mentality, and underlying self-confidence that I would receive an A no matter what. Due to my over-confidence, I was under the impression that I would not have to put forth much effort; however, near the conclusion of the second semester, I had a B in Pre-AP English 9. Despite my last push to earn a 90% in the class with the concluding assignments of the semester, my grade was finalized lower than I had wished for. It felt as if a five pound ball of lead materialized in the pit of my stomach. This experience, at first, devastated me to the fullest extent, and I…
