A Weirdest Day On Argyle Street
These pictures I took on Argyle Street, on Monday November 9th. It was a lovely day to go out and interview people for the speech project. I had an amazing day with my group. First, when we arrived to the street we went to a restaurant to have something to eat. At the restaurant we had a soup that was very delusions. After we ate, we went to interview people. I like that street. There are many cafes, restaurants on that street. On this street it was hard to find people for the interview, everyone was late for work or they hadn’t had time. I had an idea to find a park, because people in the park people always have time to talk. And we went to a park that was on this street. It was dog part, everyone there had a dog, and we interviewed 4 people

This photograph has two main purposes: to commemorate a loved man who was murdered and to point out the injustice of his murder. There is a painting of this man with clouds behind him signifying he was a great man who is now in a better place, however, the man is covered in red and there is a large amount of red underneath him on the curb representing the bloodshed of his unfair death. Right in the center of this photograph written very largely across the wall of the building is the phrase, "When you take someone's life, you forfeit your own." There are also flowers that people have placed in the surrounding area, somewhat like a grave site. These things represent the people's opinion about this man and the killing.…

The thick tree lines and vast open fields bring a sense of freedom and grandeur. The brilliant light shining like beacon of hope with the soft calming breeze flowing across the field is refreshing and pure like a baby after a warm bath. The air seems to be free and clear of the city’s poisonous air pollution and the soft sounds of birds makes it all too refreshing, like a beautiful day on the beach. With quiet clean monuments and buildings dancing across the landscape, the look of peace and quiet seems to be present at last. As the blue crisp skies begin to darken across the brilliant blue pond, the shimmering light hitting the trees is as beautiful as the sun setting on the Catalina Island on a bright blue day with soft clouds flowing across the sky. I have the taste of fresh fruit on my tongue in my mouth as I take a long deep breath, and realize how much the soft green grass adds to the peacefulness in the park. I can hear the cheerful wildlife scampering beyond the tree line, like young children frolicking in their mother’s front yard. As the quiet darkness sets in, and with the city brilliant lights in the background, the serene park makes the bustling city seem peaceful once…

For this project, I decided to go to San Juan Capistrano to do my observation. San Juan Capistrano is a small town located in Orange County, two hour north of where I live. It’s also my boyfriend Colin’s hometown. Going to San Juan was a random and hasty decision because I didn’t have any real connection to or interest in the town and, in fact, I hadn’t even known that it existed two months ago. Colin convinced me that San Juan would be perfect to write about because I would get to see things that I didn’t normally see in Los Angeles. I trusted him, so we agreed that I would tag along the next morning when he would be driving home for Mother’s Day weekend.…

In the essay “Reading a Photograph” by Cheryl Aaron, is a short story about how taking photos enables her to take a better look at her subjects. Apparently her current series of photos are related to cafes. Aaron describes how she makes contact with the owners of the cafes that she would like to visit, and obtains their permission prior to her showing up and taking photos. This particular photo of Pellicci’s café, Aaron illustrates her emotions of warmth, as she relates to the reader that she signifies the café as almost a home away from home. Comparing the ambience to the diners that she patronized as a child. Aaron details her visit, giving details about where she sat, along with what type of camera she utilized to take the photo. Aaron, again reverts to talking directly to the reader about the interior and the food, “I hope the audience picks up on the ambiance of this splendid place. Unfortunately they cannot taste the home cooking by Mrs. Pellicci” (Silverman). Aaron concludes this short story, by telling…

For this film, I chose to have a narrative about my neighbor walking her dog. On her walks, she stops by her friend’s house to have her dog play with her friend’s dogs, and to unwind from a long workday. For this assignment, I tried to emulate the style of Flaherty in Nanook of the North. To add reflexivity to the film, I purposefully used a clip in which I am visible, filming the…

Since we had nothing more suitable to do, we decided to go. Just as all of us were about to leave, another close friend stopped by my house and wanted to know. If we would care to go to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, a city north of Pueblo, to go swimming. We choose that as a more desirable alternative than a picnic. We got back home from the Broadmoor swim outing around 3:00 p.m. on that Sunday afternoon. When we turned on my street, I observed many cars parked on both sides of the road, curious, because I was not aware of any events at my house that…

Abandoned buildings tell a story behind the boarded up doors and windows, that are so easily forgotten in our ever-changing city. Recently, I have been working on a documentary photography series to bring these stories back to life. In Toronto, we are trapped following the same guided streets, with no way to escape our everyday routine. Urban exploration creates a new untold narrative of this city, as we venture into these man-made structures. It encourages people to create their own adventures by appreciating our cities forbidden spaces. These structures can be invisible in plain sight, in the middle of our city or in the quiet suburbs. They're isolated from the "normal" world, places that the average person would never think twice about,…

One day where the sun was shining, with perfect weather during the Summer, my parents had decided on this day, that we were going downtown to go to the Sea Life Aquarium in Crown Center. After about 15 minutes, we had arrived at our destination. After we had gotten out of our dirty, blue car, we went inside and went to pay for our tickets. When we got our tickets, the worker showed us where to go, and when she opened the door, I noticed a lot of people surrounding the different types of sections. There was also this activity where every station we went to, we had to stamp it in our booklets. It had pictures depending on what area we are arriving in.…

It’s not everyday when the sky was a dark black color and the clouds resembled those in Seattle. It wasn't an average bright sunny day in El Paso, And on this day i didn't realize it was going to change my whole perspective on life. On this beautiful Saturday evening i was hanging out with one of my friend named Fernando who i had never met before and had only met earlier this day . He pulled up in his two seater 2010 Crystler -that was black- as he came out of the car he was a five feet eleven inches with dark brown, hair medium skin color ,and dark eyes that reminded me of the night skies. He was a cold hearted person who would rarely let people in, but surprising in that moment he had glowed with radiance and positivity to meet…

It was september. The day was quite sunny and little bit windy. Tdifferent than in Poland. I knew that was a new beginning for me. My dream finally came true. That was the live which I have always wanted. Without parental care, without boundries. Also living in such big city as Chicago was more than I could have ever asked for. I got my first job, later I rented my first small flat. But I relized that was something missing in that beatiful picture.…

I spent the day on my own but yet, I never felt lonely. I began the day with coffee and croissants at a quaint little restaurant that overlooked the Seine River. The setting was perfect; I sat on the pavement taking in all the sights and wonders of Paris. All along the river were up and coming artists displaying their works, hackling with potential buyers. Stalls; selling T. shirts and miniature Eiffel towers. On every corner is a family bakery with the most interesting and delicious pastries. I confess that I tasted as much as I could in one day.…

Illustrating this issue of “The Review” is a selection of photos by Julie Guiches. Julie is an independent “photo-graphist” who studies the urban landscape, its people and its changing faces; her photomontages question our assumptions about the place of the individual in society. The rhythms she creates by playing with time and space help us to understand the individual’s experience of reality. In addition to working for the press and advertizing, she is also a contemporary artist contributing to several networks spanning Paris and Barcelona, including Picturetank, Exyzt, Joystick… moving between photography, architecture and Street Art. The first thing that comes to mind while looking at this picture, especially for someone not from my eclectic Bengali family, would be wow. The amalgam of colors, faces and personalities may be overwhelming to look at for some but for me, the beauty lies within the chaos. All the family members are situated side-by-side in a long line atop a short wall of bricks. Though the group is predominantly under the cool shade provided by nearby trees and shrubs, rays of sunlight penetrate through a few sparse leaves and reflect off a few faces and bodies. The camera is about twenty feet away from our family and yet each personality is clearly prominent. I could see my dad’s playful behavior as he tries to cover my cousin’s face with his baseball cap; my grandmother’s old Bollywood flair is depicted in her not looking straight at the camera but at the fountain to her right; my cousin’s grouchy attitude is shown in his scowl; and my mother’s inherent desire to look as thin as she did in her teen years is apparent in her curve conscious pose. But focusing on the entire picture rather than a single person reveals that the entire group, regardless of their situation, was simply happy at that moment in time. The bold smiles, sparkling eyes and lighthearted ambience fall nothing short of joy and delight.…

Being the only son of the family, I was always at the center of attention. My uncle, Aziz, 6 years older than me, used to live with us while he was attending college. From 2001-2004, these four years he was my best friend, partner in crimes. He always thought of him as my elder brother not my uncle. He played a very important role to help me become the person I am today. Soccer is his life and so is mine. During weekdays at 3:30pm he used to go to the park for practice. He played as the Right wing for a local club called ‘Abahoni Football Club’. I used to be the one carrying his duffle bag as I used to go with him all the time. Soccer and my uncle Aziz isn’t the only two things that come to my mind when I think of Bipin Park, there is more. Brahmaputra River, Sarinda Café, 17 small tea stalls, many street food vendors and snack shops, boats will colorful sail on the river, the homeless artist ‘Jamal’ and etc. all these elements give character to this park. May be I am writing about Bipin Park as my most pleasant place because a whole lots of good memories had been made in this place but I disagree to admit so. I mean it could be a very good reason but that’s not the main reason for me to choose this as the most pleasant place.…
