In Toronto, we are trapped following the same guided streets, with no way to escape our everyday routine. Urban exploration creates a new untold narrative of this city, as we venture into these man-made structures. The sculptures that adorn the acre-wide Cullen Sculpture Garden are not just an exhibit. They are an experience. They are to be walked amongst, and viewed as they are exposed to the elements. Light, shadow, weather, all play a part in how they are viewed throughout the day. In essence, no one sees the exact same sculpture. In full light the trees still dapple the sculptures with shadow. Metallic sculptures cast dark shadows. The steel sculptures especially challenged the viewer to interpret its meaning.…

This report was prepared by an expert in architect and urban planning Mr. J.E. Hoare, Jr. who was also the architect for Regent Park North, along with 20 other Federal-Provincial selected officials. It was understood that as a top-down planning process the redevelopment under the National Housing Act was primarily the Federal Government’s concern, but it was agreed that Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Ontario Regional Office and the Province would work closely together throughout the redevelopment plan, since, the benefits of both parties were closely correlated. All planners and architects were locally chosen, with a strong sense of belonging towards this space, and have better understanding of the space compared to outsiders. At the same time, they know the needs and wants of the…

Today's world is cruel and cold. Not so long ago, young people imagined an egalitarian society where men and women wouldn't be limited by money or possessions. A world of peace and abundance where nobody would be left behind. Unfortunately, the future is here, and it looks bleak. We live in a world still plagued with wars, diseases, greed and poverty. In 2015, we are confronted with the harsh realities of the traditionnal economy in which we live. Homelessness is one of those problems, and it does not just hurt a couple of unprivileged souls but the whole of society and our economy.…

From the inner city to the outer suburbs, statistics tell us that there are several hundreds of people sleeping on the streets, in cars or who are simply homeless. And that is just in Melbourne alone. People are having difficulty all over Australia, and all over the world, with the majority not knowing where there next meal will come from. Brad Ellis, coordinator of project 614 (a Salvation Army bus that gives homeless a place to sleep) says that the main homeless youth in Melbourne are children who are no longer with the department of human services (who have fallen through the gaps). As the so called most livable city in the world, does Melbourne really do enough for their homeless? No I don’t believe it does.…

Social work is a huge part of our society and has a great deal of benefits the effect our society on a positive note. For example social work plays a huge influence on those who are homeless, and have no shelter or proper supplies to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Homelessness is structural rather than individual in nature, thus defining homelessness in terms of oppression, power inequalities, and social forces” (Taylor, 2013, pg.262). Homelessness plays a huge role in our society and many individuals see this as something that needs to be eradicated. In the era of the 1980’s, New York City was going through a calamitous time, as the crack cocaine epidemic unleashed a wave of crime and addiction, and government mismanagement caused near bankruptcy of the city. Due to a decrease of manufacturing in the city, an economic downturn ensued, which in turn caused a shortage of affordable housing, and low levels of public assistance payments, such as welfare. The combination of these elements, caused a rise of family homelessness. The city responded to the crisis by placing the families, in hotels as temporary “housing”. Amongst these families, were Pietro’s. The downfall of his family can be rooted to three major affairs; him losing his job, being placed in The Martinique, and his son’s, Christopher,…

    1. Dust lay over every surface like dirty snow, pristine dust layer, not a foot print anywhere, dust bunnies the size of bowling balls tumbled across the floor boards toward unseen skittles, free papers piled up to the letter box and cascaded all the way to the foot of the rough wooden stairs, old tea cups lay on a coffee table thickly encrusted with dried up mould, dust covered mirrors, smell of mildew, stale air, air thick with dust, shafts of light bursting through gaps in the boarded up window, light streaming through the gaps in the heavy velvet curtains, absolute silence, not even the hum of a refrigerator, the houses only occupants weaved their webs between the spindles of the stair banisters and from the ceiling to the wall, old cobwebs billowed in the draft.…

Cultural theorists Walter Benjamin and Michel de Certeau have conceptualized the process of understanding the city and reflecting upon urban life. According to De Certeau, walking is the key ‘tactical practice’. In other words, walking is the most effective tactic that allows the execution of the strategy, which in this case is understanding the city. He views walking as being conducive to opportunities for learning. The approaches of de Certeau and Benjamin are different yet they share the central theme of walking. Benjamin focuses on flanerie as being central to the urban experience. The Flâneur refers to an artist whose work is meant to evoke place-bound nostalgia, memories, and uncover local history (Stevenson, 2003). Flanerie is the act of occupying urban space by strolling effortlessly and observing the built environment.…
