Body Keeney: A Short Story
The years passed by, with my sister watching over me. In conclusion, I will add that during the entire time my sister Jackie (surrogate mother) was watching over me, I never questioned her authority over me. And on a brighter note, how many little boys have their mom in their bedroom all night, keeping the cookie monsters at bay. I without a doubt was the one and only kid in the nation to have learned the arts of embroidery, and crochet. Jackie became an expert at playing cowboys and Indians, shooting marbles, and flying kites. When Jackie was young, she could not pronounce the word brother. Hence, when questioned who I was, she would answer I was her little body, rather than a baby brother. So, as a result from that time on, until I was fourteen years of age, all of my family, friends, and my school teachers called me Body, and still do, until this day. I still have my eighth-grade report card; the name Body Keeney appears on the front. Not knowing I had a middle name until I was fourteen years of age. However, I recall out-of-town relatives calling me by the name Charles, on the rare occasion when they would visit. It was odd they appeared not to know my name, "Who is Charles anyhow." I will cover that later as we continue down the path of my life story. As my sister and I grew …show more content…
Since we had nothing more suitable to do, we decided to go. Just as all of us were about to leave, another close friend stopped by my house and wanted to know. If we would care to go to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, a city north of Pueblo, to go swimming. We choose that as a more desirable alternative than a picnic. We got back home from the Broadmoor swim outing around 3:00 p.m. on that Sunday afternoon. When we turned on my street, I observed many cars parked on both sides of the road, curious, because I was not aware of any events at my house that

For this project, I decided to go to San Juan Capistrano to do my observation. San Juan Capistrano is a small town located in Orange County, two hour north of where I live. It’s also my boyfriend Colin’s hometown. Going to San Juan was a random and hasty decision because I didn’t have any real connection to or interest in the town and, in fact, I hadn’t even known that it existed two months ago. Colin convinced me that San Juan would be perfect to write about because I would get to see things that I didn’t normally see in Los Angeles. I trusted him, so we agreed that I would tag along the next morning when he would be driving home for Mother’s Day weekend.…

My mom was born in the city of Saigon in a family of fifteen. She is the second youngest child in the family. After the fall of Saigon, my mother’s family was actually sponsored by her third oldest sister to move to America as my aunt had been living there as a lawyer. Her family was way more prepared than my father’s family as my mother’s family was able to get to America by plane. Like my father, my mom started her journey in America in Louisiana. They had lived in New Orleans for a couple of months. It wasn’t until the family had traveled west in which they moved to Houston due to the sponsorship. My mother was around seventeen when she started school in America. She knew no English, but that didn’t stop her from excelling all her classes. While she was in high school, she met my dad as he was renting a videotape from her sister’s store. They ended up dating and both going to the University of Houston. While they were in college they got married. Right before she was about to graduate college in which she only needed to finish one more class, she ended up having me because of the honeymoon. After that, she decided to not finish college and stayed home to take care of me and then eventually my sister. My mom said that “I was a present,” but in reality, I was the accident…

Erik Erickson developed eight stages of how a child develops from a child to an adult. Throughout each step we will see the struggles and accomplishments we went through. However I am not sure what really happened throughout the ages of a newborn to five years old, but I do remember my mother telling me I loved music because I would just laugh and kick my feet when a song began to play. At this age I had a lot of trust in my mother because she was the source to keeping me nourished. Also around the age of two to three I was supposed to be potty trained, my mother had a hard time to get me to go to the bathroom in the toilet instead of my diaper. I was around 4 years old when my mother decided to put my sister and me in cheerleading,…

I'll admit it. I literally forced myself to go to this exhibition, although I had heard from people that this was an experience like no other. What I saw for myself was the most graphic and scary, but in a weird way, the most beautiful display of human anatomy. What I experienced that afternoon totally blew my mind. It was not long after I arrived there and saw it all for myself, that I was glad I had made the effort to go.…

Growing up, I was never that girl that fantasized about becoming a princess and meeting that special prince that would sweep me off my feet and save me from all misery. Even sorcery books such as the Harry Potter series did not appeal to me. I did not believe in any of that quirky fantasy land stuff so the idea of being dragged to the Michigan Renaissance Festival with my family over Labor Day weekend did not appeal to me; I would have much rather been out having fun in the sun barbequing with friends just as any other American typically celebrates the holiday. Staring out the car window all I saw was cornfields and the occasional Ma and Pa family owned restaurant or ice cream parlor. Mt. Holly came into view a little further down the road, but the slopes were dry and scarce due to it being summer. Tucked behind all the forestation was a small fairground where police orderly directed cars into the lot. The parking lot, overwhelmingly large in size, branched in two directions. One led to a general area and the other took cars single file down a long and winding path. This brought butterflies to my stomach. License plates were country wide varying from fellow Michiganders to visiting guests from neighboring states such as Indiana and Ohio and some traveling from as far away as Florida or Kansas. Once we secured our designated spot and our legs were fully stretched after sitting stationary for the hour drive we merged with the herd of people and marched together through the forest to discover this new unknown world.…

My mother has had a huge impact on my life and it is because of her that I am the person I am today and today where I am. Most people say I am a lot like my mother, both physically and mentally. We both have the same mannerism, facial expressions, and thought processes. We love to learn and travel, eat exotic and luxuries food, spend time with family, and we both have an incredible urge for knowledge. From observing my mother's behavior and listening to her lectures, she has had a great influence on my life, choices, and personality.…

During the fall of my 11th year, I was adopted by my second family along with little Leo. They were horrible to us, out of the 6 I was the eldest. All of us crammed together, Them barely having enough for all of us. Well, that's a lie, They had enough, just didn't want to share. They, I could never bring myself to refer to Them as anything other than They, didn't care about us. All They cared about was the paycheck. I took on the role of the mother. I made sure that everyone got enough food to last, kept them safe from the wrath of Them. They fed us with enough for a family of 3, and most of the time myself, along with the next eldest, would go without most meals just so the younger ones could. We would all sleep together on yoga mats on the…

Being raised in a strict Baptist home had its moments. Add to that the age of my adoptive mother and it was unlike any of my friend’s parents and homes so I noticed that rather early. My mom was in her 60’s when she took me from my birth parents and we moved to Lakeland Florida. I never had a father. I was told my mom’s husband died years before. [ (Gray, 1979) ] All her children were grown except my brother, Donald, who was nine years older. Therefore, my mom knew time was close that would cause her to be alone again and something she couldn’t handle. Because she didn’t do it legally, she had to have family members and friends go to court and swear I was her natural child to obtain a Florida birth certificate. [ (Gray, 1979) ] This took along and delayed my first grade year. So, she taught me at home until I could start school. I knew all the basics a first grader should along with much more. I knew all times tables, spelling, writing, and reading most learned by fourth grade. I couldn’t leave a big leather chair every day until I knew my lesson.…

On that sketchy Halloween night, it all started with the school play my classmates and I put on. We all put on a pretty solid performance in the show. Well enough that we decided to celebrate afterwards that night. Around 15 of my classmates and closest friends all piled in our cars and took off. As we pulled into this small unspacious blacktopped driveway in downtown Oliver Springs, the first thing we noticed was how limited parking was. We somehow managed to pile about a dozen cars in this miniscule driveway and were even forced to park a few on the lawn.…

My parents were strict with us kids at home. I was adopted into my family with three older siblings. I felt I got the brunt of everything when it came to the rules of the house. All of us children had chores that had to be finished before we were allowed to play with our friends. If my parents found out I listened to anything other than the Christian radio station, my parents took my radio away. My parents dragged us to church three days a week. I felt as though I was supervised more than my other siblings were. My other siblings were allowed to stay out late and go places whenever they asked. I wanted to be able to have the same freedom my 17 year old brothers had, only at the age of 14. So, one night, my best friend and I decided to sneak out of the house. I would never forgot that night.…
