A Lot Like Christmas Song Analysis
Daryl Batt- It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, Unfortunately Is it just me or are the holidays in America becoming more and more commercialized? The original purposes for holidays are swept under the rug and it is all about what we can get. It was November 9th and I was driving home from school, flipping through radio stations when I heard the Christmas carols. I yelled, “NO!” and completely shut the radio off. It was not even Thanksgiving yet and they were playing Christmas music! Since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I was a little put off by this. Why are they playing these songs already? What about Thanksgiving? Heck, what about Hanukkah? Why aren’t there Thanksgiving carols? That is when I decided I was going to write …show more content…
So here’s to Jesus Christ who saved our lives. It’s something we all try to ignore… Christmas must be something more.” In my song, I briefly touch on that year with my family, but I focus more on people as a whole. I ended up using the melody and a few of the lyrics from It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas and rewrote what the song was about. The creative process of rewriting this song was actually a lot harder than I had expected. When writing lyrics to another song, you have to keep the number of syllables close or exactly to the original and also the emphasis on certain syllables similar to the original. Rhyming is also very important in Christmas carols, so what I could say and how I could phrase it got limited to the words that rhymed with each …show more content…
This song not only was an outlet for me, but it also taught me how to stay motivated when writing a song as it gets tough. I had major writer’s block some days and would have to figure out how to get around it. Performing it live for the class also helps me in the future because the more I am able to perform in front of people, the more confident and comfortable I get do so. This year I am spending the holidays with my parents in the Springs and we are going to give each other memories instead of gifts. I am really not Scrooge, I just want to spend the holidays with the people I love and that is all I

Another example that Michael A. Babcock pointed out is, “how you can’t call it “Christmas” in a public place anymore.” I hear so many “Merry X-Mas and Happy Holidays”, you hardly ever hear “Merry CHRIST-mas.” There is a gradual decrease in the amount of true spiritual celebrations we have in this country today. It is truly heartbreaking to see.…

A battle began in November 2005 over the issue of properly labeling the holiday season to ensure that no one had civil liberties trampled on. Issues that many previously took for granted, such as the naming of a tree or labeling greeting cards, as either Christmas or simply holiday, became the central focus of this debate. The battles escalated until seemingly at stake were the Christian traditions that arguably established this nation. The battle lines seemed foggy and often overlapped as the nightly news and local and national politicians hastened to answer the clarion call of duty. The turmoil dragged Americans of all stripes in; most seemed offended, others defensive, all vocal. A card stating “Happy Holidays” that at one time seemed to convey a Christmas message became an ambiguous if not outright anti-Christian statement. Consumers blacklisted retailers who refused to leave the “Christ” in Christmas. Some business owners, adhering more to the almighty dollar than to any religious belief, flip-flopped to avoid damaging the brisk holiday sales. Even the American Civil Liberties Union held the stance of…

The Where I’m from poem was a great piece of writing because it showed us where everyone was from and what it was like in their family it was kind of funny to see some traditions and everyone be grossed out or everyone just laugh at it but they knew what they meant by it and accepted it. This writing was also one of my best pieces of work this year and I was happy.…

All of a sudden we can longer say “ Merry Christmas” in schools. When I was growing up we had the right to enjoy Christmas as a child and say, “Merry Christmas”. Now you have to say “ Happy Holidays” instead. Please don’t get me wrong, I believe children should enjoy other cultures, but when I see different religious groups arguing that because of the word “Christ in Christmas” or because “ Under God” in are “ Pledge of Allegiance “ That these American values are no longer honored, “ I have a problem with that”. {snopes.com/inboxer/petition/pledge.asp,2016,…

I moved from another state my senior year and I was the new girl all over again. I faced lots of obstacles where I felt like I was the only one going through. There were 3 songs that helped me get through this year, my first song is by Tamela Mann called “In Your Corner”. This song brought me through tough times. There were times that I thought that I wasn’t going to make it this far and that no one really cared. This song basically is saying that Jesus is in my corner to see me through it all, and that he hears me every time I call and that he’ll be there to catch me when I fall. In addition to that song there was another song by Kirk Franklin called “I Smile”. This song gave me that courage to smile even through my ups and downs. The song simply says “I smile even though it hurts, see I smile”. Another song that got me through this year would be by Kelly Clarkson called “Make You Stronger” This song really helped me realize that whatever I was going through that I could use it to be my stepping stool and that I didn’t have to let it keep me…

The Christmas of today is not the Christmas of 40 or 50 years ago. It has gone from a simple reminder of the Birth of Christ, and the exchange of simple gifts, into a highly commercialized and mainly secular holiday.…

First off all I don’t like Christmas, I don’t like to buy presents, all the time you need to get, just so you can go out there and use your money for presents, that they don’t even need, and some of the fake smiles you get then you buy the wrong thing for them, and just knowing that they will return it, and buy something else. What a great time, or should we call it a waste of time, we use so much time at finding presents, and use so much money for nothing, and some people can’t take the time for it, so they can get some serious stress, but do we care about that, no, we just want our presents, and if we don’t get them it would be a sad Christmas.…

    Santa

Christians treat Christmas as a Christian holiday, and it certainly started out that way, but we can tell a lot about the real nature of holidays by how they are represented in pop culture. The most common, popular, and recognized symbol for Christmas today isn't an infant Jesus or even a manger scene , but Santa Claus. It's Santa who graces all the ads and decorations, not Jesus. Santa Claus is not, however, a religious figure or symbol. He does represent some Christian morals, such as the idea of giving. The problem with the idea or concept of Santa from a Christian perspective, is that the concept distracts from the real purpose and meaning of Christmas. Santa, in fact, is so adored in American culture, that “He” is idolized, and painted as capturing the Christmas Spirit.…

Sometimes I think about how I have so many different opportunities to watch movies and hang out with my friends, and be able to have some of the highest quality materials and the people I have helped cannot even afford food. Sometimes I wonder just how blessed am I, just how selfish can I be not to let my friends borrow my things and touch my things. I think of myself in those situations, what if that was me, I certaintly wouldn’t like them always saying no and I have nothing at all. I may not even have a pencil to write with because people say no. It is another story if whatever I have is it but depending on what it is I will give it up. This December i am striving not to be so mean and selfish. I also will strive to be more considerate of other people and what they have to say.…

    Christmas Time

Everyone knows that there’s no better feeling than the night before Christmas, as you gather around at Grandma’s house and exchange gifts with the family. The warm smell of a freshly baked batch of sugar cookies flowing through your nose, and the excitement inside as you stare at your gift trying to guess what’s inside. I can hear the sharp ripping of wrapping paper as all the children around me rush through the paper to find what they have received and the laughter of the adults around as the child forms a giant grin of their face after seeing what they’ve gotten. I can feel the heat coming from the fire place as the fire crackles and sparks. After everyone finishes opening their gifts and visiting with family, we all go our separate ways on our way home to get to bed. I can feel the excitement rushing through me as I hug everyone goodbye and hear the words “Merry Christmas” in my ear. On the drive home I observe the bright colorful Christmas lights draped over every house we pass, and the creative snowmen and snow angels made by small children. The sound of cheerful Christmas songs playing on the radio while we all sing along travels through my ears. When I get home I hurry up and put my pajamas on so I can help my mom frost and decorate the cookies before heading to bed. The taste of the leftover frosting melts on my tongue when I lick it off of my fingers. I can hear the sprinkle of the various colors of sprinkles hit the counter as I sprinkle them on the cookie. When finishing the cookies, the warm feeling inside grows rapidly and I take the next step towards Christmas morning, pouring the glass of milk and leaving a few cookies out on the counter on a plate for ‘Santa’. I take a leap into my bed and pull the covers up to my neck as the excitement is hard to bare. The next morning I wake up bright and early and jump out of bed running to every room waking up the family to open the gifts. I quickly run into the living room, and take a…

    Yuletide Season

Christmas is drawing closer day by day and I hope that during this Yuletide season you will share your happiness and blessings to all the wonderful people around us. I hope that you will never lose faith in God and never stop chasing your dreams. I hope that you still remember the true meaning of Christmas which is commemorating the birth of our dearest Lord Jesus Christ. Christmas is not about the number of Christmas gifts displayed below our Christmas Trees nor is it about saying the generic Merry Christmas to a random stranger. It’s about the little things we do to make our fellow brothers and sisters happy and I hope you still remember this even though I’m not there to constantly remind you. Above all, I am really looking forward to see you again! I want to spread the real message of Christmas with you. Truthfully, spending Christmas without you would make me feel empty inside…
