Community Service “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them” John F. Kennedy On Friday November 16, 2012 I helped my church, pack over 100 Thanksgiving baskets for people that cannot afford to buy food. At the church I helped pack boxes with two of my friends, skyler and Kevin. We helped pack foods such as: Cranberry Sauce, Heinz Gravy, Spaghetti Sauce, Kraft Noodles, two Green Giant green bean cans, Potatoes, Onions, Stove top Stuffing, Smothered potatoes. We had to pack the foods in that order. The older people nagged at us because we didn’t pack the way that they wanted us to. We took several boxes in the middle and had a person get a certain amount of one product and the baskets would keep filling them up until all the boxes were filled. Just filling the boxes makes me so thankful. I am happy for what I have and I learned that I shouldn’t take anything for grantit. Sometimes I think about how I have so many different opportunities to watch movies and hang out with my friends, and be able to have some of the highest quality materials and the people I have helped cannot even afford food. Sometimes I wonder just how blessed am I, just how selfish can I be not to let my friends borrow my things and touch my things. I think of myself in those situations, what if that was me, I certaintly wouldn’t like them always saying no and I have nothing at all. I may not even have a pencil to write with because people say no. It is another story if whatever I have is it but depending on what it is I will give it up. This December i am striving not to be so mean and selfish. I also will strive to be more considerate of other people and what they have to say. I also have numerous opportunities that those people don’t have. I am thankful for my family and friends, and I am also thankful for the opportunities that I have to play

Being a nominee, I realize that the National Honor Society is an honor to be in itself. Since The National Honor Society is dedicated to helping the needy, children, the elderly and non-profit organizations. I feel that this is the right society for me because since I was a child, I have been noted for my exceptional empathy. My parents have always instilled in me a sense of responsibility and care for others. I feel obligated to utilize my gifts in an organization as prestigious as the National Honor Society. Over the past years as a scholar, I believe that I have demonstrated all four principles: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.…

Should the United States require all adults to perform one year of community service by the age of 30? I personally think this is a topic that is not at all, relevant. I believe if someone wants to lend a helping hand, then they should lend a helping hand. If you don't prefer to do this kind of community service, the government shouldn't force you to do so. There would be a lot of change in how community service is done today if the government required at least one year to be served by the age of 30.…

As I’ve learned in previous chapters and during one of my essays, community justice is a type of reform. One of its focus’s is to try and prevent crime. It also embraces the nonpolice functions of adjudication, sanctioning, and correcting (Clear, Hamilton, Cadora, 2011). Traditional correctional functions include reforms for offenders such as parole and probation.…

Oprah Winfrey once stated, “Be thankful for what you have and you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have you will never, ever have enough.” This quote portrays how you should appreciate what you have and you can’t have everything you want. Not only can being thankful change your attitude, it can change the person’s reaction towards what you are thankful for. It proves the acceptance towards what you are grateful for. Being thankful is a way of showing that a human being is still alive in this world. It can prove that there are not just greedy animals in this world, but there is a lot more than that. While some may believe that being thankful is not necessary, in reality, being thankful is essential because there is immense pleasure, it causes a person to develop and become the full person and it provides excellent vibrations.…

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” This quote by Oliver Wendall Holmes can be applied to numerous situations in our lives. Throughout my whole life, I rarely ever did community service. Though I went to nursing homes and sang carols during Christmas, I really never considered it to be true volunteer work. I was usually too busy to have any spare time to volunteer and when I did have spare time, volunteer work was never the first thing on my mind. Volunteering last Wednesday, however, did stretch my mind. Because this was my first instance of true volunteer work, everything about it was a new experience. I chose to volunteer to work the table at the blood drive at the Recreational Center because I’ve donated blood before and feel that it is very helpful and necessary to the process of saving lives. Working “behind the scenes” of the blood drive was different though. By sitting there and helping out the donors and handing out snacks afterwards, I got to see the donor community in a different way. Not only that, but a lot of times, I found it to be my responsibility to assure donors that the process was quite easy and painless. Many people came in looking unsure about whether or not they would really donate and these were the people I spent the most time talking to. My “old dimensions” were the thoughts that blood drives just easily happened; people showed up, they donated and that was all that was to it. Volunteering at the blood drive helped me better understand that things like this wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t people to volunteer at them and help everything run smoothly. By my mind being stretched by this experience, I’ve learned that even only helping out for a few hours can go a long way. I feel so much differently about volunteer work now; instead of it being a burden that I’ve been “sentenced to”, it is actually an easy way to give back to the community. On the day of the blood drive, I collected…

Community Corrections is made up of many different types of agencies working together. There are deterrence programs, parole officers and re-entry personnel to help an inmate who is going to be able to use community corrections after release from prison or jail. These people and agencies help the inmate to transition back into the community and also help them to use the available information to help deter them from becoming another statistic of the criminal justice system. Community Corrections are intended for selected criminals convicted of nonviolent crimes. These are low-level drug offenders, probationers and parolees who have committed technical violations but no new crimes.…
