Workplace Observation Paper
I am currently employed at B&L pharmaceuticals, one of the largest manufactures of generic medications in the world. In this paper I will discuss how communication flows in my workplace, organizational diversity, and conflict management. With my current position as a Group Leader the flow of communication is very important.
Communication
Communication at B&L consists of emails, work procedures and policies, telephones, and bulletin board postings throughout the facility. A majority of the emails are sent both internally and externally, make the bulk of the communication that takes place here at B&L. Using outlook express, emails also allow for the scheduling of meetings and appointments. Telephones are used to communicate within the company by dialing extensions or for paging purposes. Bulletin board postings throughout the facility mainly consists of information regarding employee moral, benefits and payroll information, and email information that is provided for those employees that do not have access to the email system. These boards also carry information about employee events or benefit changes.
Organizational Diversity
There are many factors that create diversity in the workplace. Diversity can be a positive trait of a company or can cause workplace dilemma. At B&L all the different factors of diversity are present and all are embraced and accepted. I have observed that all employees have respect for each other and everyone is perceived as an equal. This allows the managing of the diversity present in our workplace to be unproblematic. The main factor that creates diversity at B&L is age. There are employees that range from the youngest at 22 years to the oldest of 65 years. I have not seen the age gap bring problems in to the workplace, instead only benefits. There are also many

The concept of Diversity and obtaining its 'true' understanding continues to shape and reshape organizational culture globally. Article written by R. Roosevelt Thomas on Redefining Diversity, broadens the general knowledge of diversity within the workplace and our everyday lives. In fact, in the early 1990s studies were done to determine the meaning of diversity. For example, in 1997 the National Naval Research Council defined diversity as the presence of a significant number of women, members of underrepresented racial groups, and persons with disabilities throughout the organization (National Research Council Staff. Building a Diverse Workforce: Scientists and Engineers in the Office of Naval Research. Washington, DC, USA: National Academies Press, 1997. p viii. ) Although a general relative definition, R. Roosevelt Thomas provided a more in depth understanding of diversity and indicates in his article that diversity is no longer about the crucial distinctions between groups, but is the elements that encompasses both the differences and similarities of employees (Understanding and Managing Diversity, pg ___.) thus, creating a diversity mixture within corporations. For me, it is surprising to adjust to the notion that diversity can in fact relate to the similarities and/or qualities of constituencies. This helps to eliminate the thought process that diversity is one dimensional.…

Companies are in business to make a profit and maintain market share. Obviously, healthcare institutions have the same goal. Hospitals, a part of the healthcare industry, like other companies, no longer just operate on a small scale. They are forced to perform globally. Patients, a hospital’s primary customers, are able to compare services of other hospitals, urgent care centers, and clinics across the globe. Hospitals to be successful have to use unique methods to get their goals aligned with those of their employees, seeing that they are the driving force of the organization. There has to be a culture that supports employees’ growth and also one which does not encourage disruptive behavior from their employees. If the reverse occurs and senior management does not support growth or ignores disruptive behavior then they are positioning themselves for failure.…

Diversity has many faces that range from gender, culture, ethnicity, race, economic status, physical abilities, and many more, and this can be a problem that can affect many people who are employed or looking for employment in society because they are being judged or discriminated against for their differences. Thank you for comments and kind words on my DQ 2 post. Your comments “Some identify certain behaviors as a special education red flag when indeed it is a behavior of a specific culture. It does raise issues regarding racial profiling too” reminded me of couple events that I experienced. One from my youth and one recently during my practicum observation study. I am a son, a former migrant worker (when he was a child) and grew up in a farming community where bilingual education was the norm in the classroom. Having paraprofessionals in my elementary classroom to work what would be classified today as ESL students was common. Perhaps because farming was a big economic resource to the community when I was a child,…
