Introduction

In every industry or career path, there will always be people that are either overpaid or underpaid. Today I will be talking to you about why athletes are overpaid. I will first talk about if athletes really are overpaid, then I will talk about the top five most paid professional athletes, lastly I will explain if athletes really do deserve being paid that much for what they do.

Transition: Now for my first main point, are athletes really overpaid.

Main point #1

when we ask the question, "are professional athletes overpaid?” it requires us to focus on the industry of professional sports as a whole. The minimum salary of major league athletes ranges from $100,000-$300,000 per year. In the NBA, the average salary is in the ballpark of $5,000,000 a year according to overpaidathletes.net. In my opinion it is a lot just for playing a sport. Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of one's work. In today's society, one should be paid according to the job’s economic importance and their value to society. Even our president Barack Obama only makes 400,000 dollars a year compared to tiger woods who makes 110 million dollars a year.

Transition: Next are the top 5 most paid athletes today

Main Point #2

Number five is Phil Mickelson earning an estimated 40 million according to Craig Masterson from the bleacher report.com. Number 4 is Lebron James from the Miami heat earning 41 million dollars a year. Number 3 is David Beckham who gets paid an 44 million dollars a year and much more through endorsements such as adidas and gillete. Number 2 is Kobe Bryant who gets paid 47 million dollars a year and number one is Tiger Woods who gets 110 million dollars a year.
