My Interest in Music
My interest in music was well established at the age of 11 when I started to learn Harp. It all started one day during the music lesson in school, that I was impressed by this magnificent instrument and its reverberating, angelical sound. So I moved to first learn of the basic techniques and consequently deepen my study into the history and theory of Music, and afterwards joining a Harp Ensemble wanting to gain more experience playing the instrument. Since then, I got more opportunities to perform in front of an audience and motivating myself to continue to learn the techniques use to play harp. Among my most meaningful performances, I think the ‘Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation Little Heroes Sharing The Love Concert’ has been the most worthy one because this concert in particular had the objective of raising funds to provide medical help to poor people in Africa, that cannot afford medications. In this occasion I felt the matter was not just about playing in concert but through the power of music I got to instrumentally help a cause. Besides that, at the age of 14, I began to learn the piano, and since strengthen my techniques at stroking the cords, the fluency of movement in my fingers and the expression I conveyed in the piece. The biggest challenge that I had to overcome was the fact that I was often compared to other students that were younger than me and more skilled than I was because of having learned the instrument at a younger age. Even so, I did not let this factor take me down or my passion for music because everyone has a different way to interpret a melody. I must say that practicing consistently everyday has been my winning card when I reached to further improve my technique. I did not let criticism get to my nerve but instead I empowered myself in front of my competitors and I think I have achieved a better perspective about music and how to use it. In three occasions, I was asked to compose three songs using the program Sibelius, which

Figured bass is a musical notation using numbers to indicate chords, intervals, and other aspects in relation to the bass note of the music and basso continuo is the harmony of the music itself. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve observed people playing music around me. My family is musically inclined, which I believe is the reason I’ve been drawn to it. In 2006, I began taking guitar lessons but I never had much interest in playing. Things changed in 2009, and I wished to be different. I wanted to be good at something so I began to teach myself guitar and have stuck with the guitar until now. In 2010, I began to play on my church’s worship team and I enjoyed it very much. I have now been a worship leader for the past four years and it’s something I love to do. I love it so much that for the past two years I have gone to Camp Electric to improve my skills. Camp Electric is a rock and roll music camp where musicians pick an instrument and they participate in workshops with that instrument. This camp is filled with people who love music and who love playing music. I have such a passion for playing that I have begun teaching guitar lessons and now I am expressing music with my patients in order to achieve a goal.…

“Lost your Head Blues” was written and performed by Bessie smith, known as the “Empress of the Blues.” She lived from 1894-1937. The songs Smith sang along with her performances allowed her the opportunity to become popular in the 1920’s. While the songs she sang were revolved around her life, and not that of the community, many folks said that the stories were relatable to them. “Lost Your Head Blues” in particular was a sad love song that became a popular hit in the 1920’s, specifically 1926. Due to how the man was treating her with such disrespect, Smith sings about leaving the man she loves. Her music was considered to be classical blues based on the African American blues genre. Long before Smith’s time, this type of music with its sad and negative tone was already being played. For instance, “Flow My Tears” was written around the 1600’s which was during the Renaissance period. This was considered popular during Shakespeare’s time. It was produced by John Downland, who was a well-known English composer in Europe. He lived from 1563-1626. It was derived from a poem perhaps previously written by Downland. Downland is well-known for his pieces which represent sadness. In that, it portrays one’s happiness coming to an end—similarly to that of “Lost Your Head Blues.”…

On a cold December afternoon, a shy 10 year old waited with her family in a quaint restaurant. She sat nervously wondering if she could play in front of all these people. What if she made a terrible mistake? What if she cried? What if she couldn’t perform? These are the questions that consumed her mind. With encouragement from her mother, the girl hesitantly approached the electric piano. Opening to the page of her first song, she placed her fingers and began her elementary Christmas song. She submerged herself in the music she created. When the song ended, the patrons responded in applause and looked on in wonder at this girl’s talent and ease. At that moment, the young girl realized she wanted to pursue music as a career. For me, that little girl, nothing has changed since.…

I wanted to be like all my other friends and play the clarinet, but instead I was chosen to play the flute. I did not understand at first why Mr. Peirce wanted me to play the flute, I thought it was complicated and would be difficult to function. We started by fingering and playing one note at a time repeatedly until each note was well played. Next, we started playing notes together to make sure we knew how to go from one to the other smoothly. Lastly, we learned scales, also known as playing the letters of the staff up then down. Soon after having these lessons of learning how to finger the notes and how to correctly blow in my mouth piece, I realized it was much easier then it looked. After a year, I was moved into the high school band. There were a small number of flutes, so we had to play very loud. We started by learning small songs. By playing a new song every day, I started to memorize the keys which made playing much easier. As the months passed Mr. Peirce placed a music piece in front of us known as “Bella’s Lullaby”. I was then ecstatic! Bella’s Lullaby was the piece played in one of my favorite movies, Twilight. It took us weeks to learn and another to perfect. After learning the piece I finally knew what it felt like to hear music speak. The piece was full of emotion including a lot of crescendo and decrescendo. Meanwhile, after finishing the song, Mr. Peirce thought that it should be played amongst an audience. We were to invite all our family and friends to what we called a concert. After playing the piece, along with other small pieces that we learned, we were given a round of applause. That night, Mr. Peirce awarded me with the “Most Improved…

A few weeks ago I attended a recital/concert in the UMHB auditorium performed by the Waco orchestra (I think that’s who it was). At first when I got there, I wasn’t paying attention because I was bored and knew I was only there to get my fine arts experience credit. After about two songs, I remembered that I was in Music Appreciation and some of the songs they were playing, I heard in class before. I began to tune into to certain instruments and listen to their unique sound and what significant part they played in the song. I also began to realize that I was catching on to some of the patterns in the melody, for example ABBABBA. If I had never been in the music appreciation class I wouldn’t have done any of those things, but it’s just ironic that when you take a class like this, you find yourself paying attention to certain things in music that you never would have found yourself doing prior to the fact. One thing that really interested me was that in one song, a woman who was playing the trumpet had her own solo part. For one, I honestly didn’t expect her to be playing a trumpet, as bad as that sounds. Secondly, I didn’t expect her to be as good as she was. I was in shock at some of the notes she was hitting, and I admit that I was pretty impressed. I played the trombone in middle school so of course I had to watch the trombone players while reminiscing that I used to be the one up there doing that, I was pretty good. After not playing for so long, I forgot the notes and the certain places you slide the horn to make a certain note. Sometimes I wish that I could still play because I believe that being able to play an instrument is a beautiful talent. I would definitely go to another musical now because it’s fun when you’re there to listen and admire, instead of just being there because you have to. When you’re actually involved with the concert, it makes being there a lot more fun and makes you appreciate the work and practice that was done to…

Singing in the choir, learning from the drummers and organ players I fell in love with the different grooves and sounds of different instruments. I joined percussion in junior high and with countless hours of practice and lots of tough love from Mr. Jones, my percussion instructor, I learned and practiced with about 20 instruments. The switch between instruments was almost like second nature earning me first chair in a class of about 40. Once in high school I began looking for a way to turn doing what I love into a career and my interest in music producing and engineering grew into a burning passion. Working with different artists and learning how to produce, mix and master vocals with various softwares, using different midi controllers, plugins etc has taught me many different ways to find sounds i like and turn them into art. Receiving recognition that thousands of human beings have taken the time out of their day to listen the art that you created is the best feelings in the world. Giving people something to relate to by painting a lyrical picture from a blank canvas is immortal. Henceforth after hours of online research I decided to try and take my skills and elevate them to a level where they are needed in society as a vital piece of the vastly growing music…

However, in middle school, I decided to join choir and band. My life suddenly became filled with concerts, honor bands, and other performances. As a kid, I had sung in a small student choir in my elementary school. I had not received a great deal of exposure to instrumental playing by this time, the more disciplined instrumental instruction began in junior high. However, one day while shopping around in Walmart of all places, I convince my parents to purchase a CD of classical music recordings, after which I absolutely fell in love with classical music. This began my determination for playing an instrument. In my junior high school years, I enjoyed playing with the Carver Cougar Band at school events and outside in the community, while taking on the role of being one of its principal band leaders, which allowed me to explore my creativity and leadership simultaneously. I really did not begin to comprehend the world I had descended into until I transitioned to high school.…
