I AM A TEACHER
The alarm loudly buzzed off at exactly 5:00 in the morning. Though my head ached because of lack of sleep from the previous night, my feet searches where my bedroom slippers are. Finding them, I quickly arrange the bedcover and folded my blanket. Eyes half-open, I slowly made my way to the kitchen and filled the kettle. While waiting for the water to boil, I prepared two cups with coffee, sugar and creamer: one for me, the other for my father who is already physically incapacitated because of the head trauma he suffered from a vehicular accident some three years ago. Coffee prepared, I went to my parents’ bedroom and called them up. Slowly and unsteadily, my mother helped my father to get up. We had coffee together while engaging in our usual morning conversation. Thirty minutes later, I am pulling out from the cabinet my sangria red uniform. Done with dressing up, I made my way out of my bedroom and bid goodbye. I went out of the house and started my journey to where I worked. On the way there, things played on my mind: is the allowance I gave to my brother who is enrolled in a state university as a freshman enough for his meals and other miscellaneous expenses, mother has to go to the doctor for a check up, father is not eating well, electric bill is coming, the fridge is almost empty but for the bottles of water and medicines, payday is nowhere near. All these played in my mind, unmindful of the traffic and the number of pupils, employees, teachers all in a hurry to reach where they are headed.
Alas, I reached the gates of my workplace. As I stepped in, I heard loud and sunny greetings. “Good Morning, Maam”, echoes through the corridor as I make my way! Whoah! I snapped into realization! It is Monday morning. And those warm greetings came from my pupils. Their greetings pulled me back to today and the tasks I have to face. Their greetings touched me deep into my heart. And their friendly and hopeful smiles, brings joy and hope in me. And I remember! There is a lot to be bothered than my bills and other necessities at home. The moment I put on that sangria red uniform I should have woken up and put off the mechanical me. The instant I dressed up with that sangria red uniform, I should be bothered with what will I teach, how will I make my pupils learn, how will I make a change in their lives. Because foremost of all I AM A TEACHER. It is my task, my duty and my moral obligation to teach them and make them learn, to prepare them academically for the many challenges that life may bring. Teaching entails a lot of sacrifices and a lot more worries than being head of the family. With one single mistake, a teacher can ruin ones life. Doctors who by mistake cut up the wrong artery end the life of his patient. Engineers and architects who made mistakes can cause the building or house to collapse. A pilot can cause a plane to crash because of his errors. Unlikely, a teacher who wrongly teaches a concept to a grade school pupil will make that child remember how he has been taught because a child gives so much respect to teachers. Their teachers are their role models.
And this I have in mind, for teachers like me, forget your dot-like problems, set aside your worries and face the bigger challenge for foremost of all, I AM A TEACHER.

Ordinarily, the sun’s light captured everything in sight like a mother hugging a child and giving it warmth. From the dark oak bed, I rose because of the unpleasant bites of mosquitoes. The Civil War is always on my mind. After a most successful battle yesterday when our soldiers all left home, relief and happiness came to mind, for there was a chance that we would win. Consequently, that would explain the surge of energy running through my body after waking up. Starting off with breakfast, I walked to my kitchen, the wood underneath my feet start to creak. The closer I walked to the kitchen, the warmer and cozier the atmosphere became. My servant, Julia, prepared breakfast for me today similar to many other days, I always wonder what will breakfast will be. Fresh eggs from my brown feathered hens were soft surrounded by creamy goat cheese, and well-cooked toast was on the plate this morning. Enjoying the meal is a morning ritual,…

Today is perhaps one of the most important days of my life. It is the day I take my placement exam that determines which major you will be put into at the higher learning institution. Shakily I finish getting dressed for the day, I am adorned in a pair of navy pants and a grey button up with the number 84 on the cuff. Each year the society gives a number to every child born. I was the 84th child of the year so that is the number I was assigned, many of my other classmates have number ranging from 20 to over 200. I slip out of my room and jog to the end of my hall barely catching the last lift to the 97th floor where the test is administered. Not everyone gets invited to secondary school, for 75% of the world primary is the end, they didn’t pass, and would be taught trade jobs with little opportunity for advancement. Due to this pressure of the test looms over me and the memory of leaving my mother and family take over my mind almost daily.…

I remember it all. I can still feel the warm summer wind gliding my sun-kissed cheeks. I didn’t usually have all of my windows down while I drove, especially not on the way to my lackluster burden, otherwise known as my job. Today was an exception, however, summer was quickly approaching its end, and I would be once again bound by the chains of high school. I decided to cherish every little bit that I had left. As I pulled in, I thought to myself, “just another ordinary day of work.” Oh…

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…

I furiously ripped a sheet of paper out of my notebook and glared at the blank lines I had to fill. My mom assigned a creative writing paper to my daily schoolwork load. Up until seventh grade all I had known was the public school system. In public school, I had acquired an unhealthy habit of getting away with the least amount of work while still maintaining an above average grade. I had the assumption that school would be even easier, having my mom as my teacher. To my surprise, my mom actually expected more effort from me than any of my other teachers in public school. My mom rudely awakened me to the fact that true success did not come without struggle.…

It was a week into my senior year in Ganesha High School. Walking into my third period AVID class, right after our 10 minute nutrition break, everybody, rowdy and noisy, talked about what they had done that weekend or what they had seen at break. As usual I walked towards my seat and as usual it was a task. My school bag was hanging on my side and I had my breakfast box that was filled with a milk carton, an apple, and a packaged bread in my hand; I walked and tried not to trip over the carelessly left bags on the isle. People stood up even after the bell had rung and the noise level was still high. I finally got to my seat; first row, first seat, right next to the teacher’s desk in which he had his computer. I put my bag down on the floor and put my breakfast box on top of my desk. The teacher, Mr. Mariles, came in and everybody took their seat, the noise level lowered distinctively. I turned over to face my friend who was sitting behind me. I whispered to her “Do you know what we’re doing in class today?” she whispered back “I think we are working on our personal statement.” I turned to face the front of the class, with a disgusted expression on my face. The teacher then started to explain what we were going to do that day. He had a smile in his face and was making hand movements all over the…

I still remember it was noon of a sunny Saturday and I was doing my homework at my room. My room was so quite except the regular ticking of the wall-clock. Suddenly, an insistent knocks on the door break the quietness. Usually, I would dismiss that: in most cases, it was just someone knocking at the wrong door. However, the sound didn’t go off after quite a while. In the bedroom beside mine, my parents were taking snap and they appeared to be falling deep sleep. They worked very hard at working hours and weekends are the only time they could rest themselves. So, I stood up and walked to the doorway reluctantly.…
