In many of Ovid’s stories and in Bisclavret, the transformation that resulted in the loss of communication due to a lack a voice resulted in a loss of power for the transformed. We see this in many tales, although the form of transformation and the result varies from case to case. In Acteon and Callisto’s case, their transformation into an animal led to their inability to disclose their identity. Acteon’s to his court and Callisto’s to her son and in both cases, would result in their deaths. In Daphne’s case, she was unable to communicate her lack of consent to Apollo who then proceeded to make her his symbol, by adopting her laurels as his head piece. She could no longer resist him or communicate her…

Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, is established in the play as the jester to the King of Fairies, Oberon. He first appears in Act 2, Scene 1 when he and another fairy discuss the disagreement between Oberon and Titania are having. The fairy gives us some indication of Puck's character as she describes how Puck "frights the maidens of the villagery" and "Misleading the night wanderers" (Act 2.1, line 35). When Titania refuses to give up the boy servant that Oberon wants, he comes up with a plan to steal the child, and enlists Puck's help to do so. Oberon is fully aware of Puck's desire to have a good time at the expense of others, but trusts him with the task of retrieving the flower to make Titania fall in love with "Lion, Bear, Wolf, or Bull." (Act 2.1, line 180) The idea here is to convince Titania to hand over the changeling boy while she is infatuated with a beast. Being attracted to mischief, Puck seems excited to be tasked to this adventure, and claims to return "Within forty minutes" (Act 2.1, line 176) so that they can…

Tartuffe has fooled nobody but Orgon – the man who has the power and wealth in this situation. The characters in this play all play a certain role in the plot. Elmire, Orgon's wife, presents a reasonable attitude towards life and the situation. She was the only one able to convince Orgon to see for himself that Tartuffe was a hypocrite. She wants nothing but to save her husband from Tartuffe's control. Damis, Orgon's son, is the unlucky soul to take the blame for his father's misjudgment of Tartuffe. In trying to help his father, he loses his trust and his ties to him. He wants to keep Tartuffe away from his family, but the only thing he succeeds in doing is losing his inheritance. Mariane is the lovely daughter, who is going to be forced to marry a man she does not love or even like. She is part of Orgon's plan to make Tartuffe a member of the household, whether she likes it or not. She just wants to marry the man she loves. Cleante is Orgon's brother-in law. He tries to get everyone to view the situation with calm and reason. He wants the best for Orgon and his family. Tartuffe is the imposter who weasels his way into Orgon's inheritance and then betrays him. He is only looking for the money and is a very greedy man. Orgon is the central character that comes under the influence of Tartuffe. His only want seems to be to make Tartuffe an ally to his house. He is blind to the real situation and seems to have no common sense and no trust in his family and what they are telling him. He is duped by Tartuffe, and is only saved by those he would not listen to before. He is a complex man who makes the story what it…

Orgon feels betrayed because he put enough trust into the friendship he had with Tartuffe to allow him to marry his daughter, but instead he wanted more. Tartuffe wanted to take Elmire away from Orgon. Instead of being satisfied with Dorine, Tartuffe was filled with greed. “Marry my daughter? Lust after my wife?” In this quote, Orgon is confused because he expected his daughter to be enough as any father would. Tartuffe’s betrayal is also unexpected because Orgon held Tartuffe in very high standard. Orgon was so naïve and thought so highly of him the he had given Tartuffe the deed to his house. In a concurring opinion, Orgon is very ignorant for trusting a man that he does not know. Although Tartuffe is said to be righteous and holy, he is still a man and he still can sin.…

The first and main trait that characterizes Puck is mischievous. Puck has done mischievous acts ranging from turning Nick Bottom's head into that of an ass to something as simple as scaring the maidens in the village. We know very early on into the play that Puck is a bit mischievous when his fellow fairy makes this statement "that shrewd and knavish sprite Call'd Robin Goodfellow"(Shakespeare-37). “Shrewd” means malicious while “knavish” meaning is mischievous. Another quote that expresses his mischievousness is “Follow my voice, we’ll try no manhood here”(Shakespeare-). In this quote Puck is trying to trick Demetrius and Lysander over to him by disguising his voice. He does this so he can fix what he messed up and get the love potion in the eyes of Lysander.…

The first set of characters impacted by the manipulation of love was Oberon and Titania. Throughout the story, their love was rocky. In the beginning of the play, the two were fighting heavily about a young boy in Titania's custody who Oberon apparently wanted for himself. The two fight for a while and eventually part on bad terms. This leaves Oberon feeling unsettled so he calls for Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, to find an herb that holds the power of love. This is where the manipulation begins. Oberon gives Puck instructions to place drops of the herb in Titanias eyelids and then "the next thing then she waking looks upon, be it on lion, bear, or wolf, or bull, on meddling monkey, or on busy ape, she shall pursue it with the soul of love."(Shakespeare, 2.1.179). Oberon believes that when Titania is madly in love with whomever or whatever, she will be more willing to give up the boy that he wants so badly. Titania falls in love with another character in the play, Bottom. The story goes on and towards the end of the play, Titania is released from the spell of the herb and her and Oberon renew their love. This relates to wc 972 the theme of the play in many ways. The way Oberon messed with Titania's feelings shows the manipulation of love for others' benefits. Also this shows how the love was rocky in the beginning but eventually smoothed itself out.…
