Titania In A Midsummer Night's Dream
Explore how Shakespeare explores love through the character of Titania in ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’.

Act 2, Scene 1

At the start of the dialogue between Titania and Oberon, Titania greets Oberon by calling him ‘jealous’. She then goes onto claim that he has committed adultery with the ‘Amazon’ (hippolyta). Oberon then goes onto defend himself saying that Titania has ‘love for Theseus’. Here Shakespeare is using these two characters to represent love in a satirical way. The characters are used to mock society’s ideals of things, like marriage. This adultery that is happening between Oberon and his Titania was very common for couples of that era. As both of these characters are part of a higher class of people, Shakespeare may have been using

In the play a Midsummer Night's Dream written by William Shakespeare, there are many lovers that are drawn to each other in various ways. One can fall in love at any age. The definition of love is a deep affection for someone or something. In the Shakespeare's play the three pairs of lovers encounter issues where Oberon instructs Puck to sprinkle "love juice" on an Athenian man's eyes. However, he did it to the wrong man, and the other lovers started turning on their loved ones and showing love and affection for another; in Titania's case it was an ass. While reclining with Titania, Bottom states the quote," reason and love keep little company nowadays". This quote is very significant to how love worked in the play and even in normal teenage life today. The quote is greatly signified by Garrett and Caroline, who both liked each other in high school but could not find reason of why.…

In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Helena says that love is blind, and this foreshadows the actions that Titania and Egeus make when the interests of loved ones are in mind. First, when they argue about the Indian boy, Titania tells Oberon, “Set your heart at rest/ The Fairyland buys not the child of me”(2.1.121b-122). Titania is blinded to the disasters caused by the fight between her and Oberon because of the Indian boy she will not give up and has begun to love. Lastly, while Theseus and Egeus talk about Hermia’s marriage, Egeus says, “As she is mine, I may dispose of her/ which shall be either to this gentleman or to her death”(1.1.42-44). This quote shows that Egeus is blinded by his pride and what he thinks is right. He cannot see…

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare is telling the readers that, love needs no reason to exist; it defies logic and ignores all circumstances. This compelling message is very thoroughly communicated with the connection of the fantasy world and reality. The connection occurs in a forest, where each character of significance is, at one point, present. Here, the characters experience unforeseen events, as a result of the debatable use of magic, from those in power. However, despite the extreme unusualness and complications, the characters challenge the circumstances, and persist in loving the one they feel closest to. In this play, this situation is best represented by three significant relationships. The first exists between a lover and her hater, the next involves a young and rebellious couple, and the last concerns an ill-fated mechanical and the queen of the fairies.…

The love of Hippolyta and Theseus is less playful than the four crossed lovers. But it is also less elastic, and lacks the endless sensory allusions that signal trouble. Titania and Oberon, who dwell in the sensory world, can embrace and bless the marriage state but cannot truly achieve it themselves. This triple wedding at the end of the play is not necessarily happy. Essentially, Shakespeare embraces the necessity of law without reveling in it. One cannot live their life in the sensory world without controlling their perception. This control is human reason, and judgement. The beauty of the world, and the capacity of our vision to perceive it, is even greater when we understand what we are seeing and why. A Midsummer Night's Dream is not…

Enchantment plays a major role in the play. However some characters are given the opportunity to reject love while others are not. Forced love is portrayed in the play between Theseus and Hippolyta, the queens of the Amazons. Since Theseus has won the battle and we see him and Hippolyta marry each other, but not because they love each other but they are forced to. “I wooed thee my sword, and won thy love doing thee injuries” (1.1.16-17)In this line Theseus says how he made her fall in love with him by injuring her. Throughout the play their love for one another grows. In Act 5 Scene 1 Hippolyta says “My Theseus, that these lovers speak of” (5.1.1) She is saying how she is willing to marry him. How their love at the beginning of the play was forced then slowly turned into true love, during the play forced love was also used by parents.…

“The course of true love never did run smooth,” comments Lysander, articulating one of A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s most important themes—that of the difficulty of love (I.i.134). Though most of the conflict in the play stems from the troubles of romance, and though the play involves a number of romantic elements, it is not truly a love story; it distances the audience from the emotions of the characters in order to poke fun at the torments and afflictions that those in love suffer. The tone of the play is so lighthearted that the audience never doubts that…

In the beginning of the play, Helena says love is blind when you love someone so much. The two characters, Titania and Lysander show one exactly how the flower can change and make them blind in love. When Titania was in bed with Bottom she says, “Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful” (3.1.127). This shows us that Titania doesn’t see Bottom’s faults. The magic flower blinds her into thinking he’s beautiful in every way, and she doesn’t see that he’s an ass. My second piece of evidence to show one that love is blind, is when Lysander wakes up and says to Helena “And run through fire i will for thy sweet sake. Transparent Helena” (2.2.110). This evidence shows us that the magic flower poisoned Lysander into loving Helena instead of Hermia. Lysander…

Many people are known to be tricksters just to get their way. Oberon and his wife, Titania do not have a healthy relationship which causes Oberon to behave badly. This is proven when Oberon suggest, "Having once this juice, I'll watch Titania, when she is asleep, and drop the liquor of it in her eyes. The next thing she, waking, looks upon, be it on lion, bear, or wolf, or bull, on a meddling monkey, or on a busy ape, she shall pursue it, with the soul of love”(II.II.180-186). Oberon plays a trick on his wife, and gets her to fall in love with the first creature she sees which turns out to be a donkey. Thus, this shows how tricky and mischievous Oberon is and how him acting evil creates havoc towards his relationship and as well as the play. Oberon also gets others to…

It appears that Hippolyta and Titania’s main purpose in the play is as a tool to reinforce male superiority and female subservience in order to add comedic strands specifically aimed at the original intended audience, in this case, the elizabethan royal court. Through an exploration of the themes of love, sexuality and marriage Shakespeare shows that the Women in the play are, to a certain extent, there to be the play toys of the powerful men around them; Whether a daughter is being threatened with death, unwilling marriage or a life as a nun or a Warrior queen is being forced into submission by a totalitarian husband, the opinions and feelings of a women are rarely taken into account, and, if acknowledged, are brushed to aside as seen in Act 5, Scene 1 when Hippolyta voices her opinions of Theseus’ choice of play.…
