The Bohemian Scandal

In Conan Doyle’s short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” (1888), Sherlock Holmes can tell that the stranger possess great wealth before he speaks a single word. Sherlock Holmes analyzes everything when it comes to people. He uses their appearance, how they carry themselves, and what kind of objects they have on them. The author uses descriptive words to describe the way the stranger looked. This essay will prove that Sherlock Holmes is so observant of everyone, that he can tell who you are before speaking to you. In the short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” Mr. Sherlock Holmes receives a letter of the most secretive importance. In this letter, it was stated that the person is not to be known and will be wearing a mask. When the stranger arrives this is how he is described. “A man entered who could hardly have been less than six feet six inches in height, with the chest and limbs of a Hercules. His dress was rich with a richness which would, in England, be looked upon as akin to bad taste. Heavy bands of astrakhan wereslashed across the sleeves and fronts of his double-breasted coat, while the deep blue cloak which was thrown over his shoulders was lined with flame-coloured silk and secured at the neck with a brooch which consisted of a single flaming beryl. Boots which extended halfway up his calves, and which were trimmed at the tops with rich brown fur, completed the impression of barbaric opulence which was suggested by his whole appearance. He carried a broad-brimmed hat in his hand, while he wore across the upper part of his face, extending down past the cheekbones, a black vizard mask, which he had apparently adjusted that very moment, for his hand was still raised to it as he entered. From the lower part of the face he appeared to be a man of strong character, with a thick, hanging lip, and a long, straight chin

In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Scandal in Bohemia,” the content of the photograph causes problem for the king. In addition, Holmes’s reaction to the photograph creates suspense, and Doyle’s tone achieves this suspense. I believe the content of the photograph causes a problem for the king because the king will be married to Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meningen, second daughter of the King of Scandinavia, and the photograph contains the picture of the king when he was still a prince and a woman named Irene Adler. “Threatens to send them the photograph.” Irene Adler threatens the king that she will send the photograph to Clotilde’s family that’s why the king is having a problem. Next, Holmes’s reaction to the photo creates suspense. “Oh, dear! That…

In this passage, Larson officially introduces the character of H. H. Holmes as he roams around a Chicago train station. Larson’s purpose in this passage is to characterize H. H. Holmes’s persona as well as his tendencies around women in order to foreshadow his behaviors later in the book. According to Larson, Holmes possessed a sense of confidence that- in addition to his good looks- naturally attracted many women. He had, “dark hair and striking blue eyes,” and with his confidence as well as his sense of fashion, Holmes often created the impression, “of wealth and achievement.” Larson then employs a metaphor, connecting great murderers to having, “blue eyes,”- alluding that since Holmes has “striking blue eyes,” he is possibly a great murderer; he also uses a metaphor to compare Holmes’s eyes to those of a “Mesmerist,” connotating that he possesses a powerful sense of control over people- particularly over women.…

City in most urban gothics tend to be a labyrinth of mystery, a source of corruption and evil. The role that the city plays in creating evil is not limited to the labyrinthic nature of the city which protects the crimes of antagonists and villains. The creation of evil and is association with the city is also influenced by the early Victorian perception of the city and the crimes that occurred in the city. Irene Adler the primary antagonist and villain, in the Arthur Conon Doyle’s “Scandal in Bohemia” (1891), outwits Sherlock Holmes – One of the greatest detectives and brilliant minds in literature to date. The nature in which if she operates, is helped by the nature of the city which encourages, promotes and even hide the criminality and violence.…

Disguises can come in many forms, some of which are so carefully constructed one may not even realize that it is a disguise or, they can also be obvious to the person to whom you wish to hide. Eric Wright’s “Twins” and Nelson Bond’s “Vital Factor” are short stories whose central theme of appearance versus reality is seen through the analysis of the plots and its’ characters. Subsequently, both the murderer and Wilkins are not whom they speak, having a single minded focus can both save the wife and deceive Crowder, and using much time to conceive a master plan goes corrupt for the husband and Crowder.…

The famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is known for his keen observation skills and logical thinking that has outsmarted criminal masterminds. His ability to conclude a theory from reason and logic is impressive; however, “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts" (Scandal, 3). For his cases, Holmes gathers up data and information in any way he can, one being the art of disguise. The use of disguises play a significant part in crime solving because they allow Holmes to conceal his identity so he can gather information and ultimately deceive society.…

    1. “He walked with confidence and dressed well, conjuring an impression of wealth and achievement.” (pg 35). This character, H. H. we can see that people believe that you cannot buy your way into the upper class, if you weren’t born a gentleman, you cannot become one. It is not based on wealth but on family background and reputation. In Great Expectations, the upper class is not depicted as a nice environment, it all seems unkept, dirty and poorly constructed. This is apparent from Pip’s lodging at Barnard's inn, He is staying in a wealthy area but his furniture is literally falling apart. This is symbolic as the upper classes are more interested in the appearance and not so much the inner and deeper quality, same as a proper gentleman. For example, Bentley Drummle is a very high up gentleman who is educated and is very wealthy, but he is a horrible person who tricks Pip and ends up marrying Estella. When Magwitch is speaking of his time with compeyson, he mentions brewers, from which Miss Havisham got her wealth. Magwitch says, “You cannot possibly be genteel and bake, you may be genteel as never was and brew”. This suggests that even though both bread and beer are made from the same ingredients, You cannot be a baker and be a gentleman, but you can be a brewer. This is linked with the idea that people of the upper classes, only care about appearances and not about what really…
