A Modest Proposal Ap Lang

It’s a sad plight of those in other countries hoping, wishing, trying to get into the land of opportunity - The United States. Many end up immigrating illegally, and bringing their young children with them. These children, too young to understand at the time, and now stuck with being illegal. Belonging neither in their country of origin, or in the U.S., the illegal immigrants are stuck between a rock and a hard place. It is for the good of the immigrants that I propose my television show, to be aired on Univision and Bravo, “ Who Wants to be Legal?”
In today’s world economy, millions of people are poverty stricken, starving, and desperate. Hoping for an opportunity to begin a new life, millions of foreigners become illegal immigrants. The process for a visa application can last for years, and runs the risk of being denied. The children of the illegals suffer, growing up in constant fear of deportation. Instead of allowing this vicious cycle to continue, I propose my game show. Five foreigners, from different countries, compete for a work visa. The game show will consist of 10 episodes, and will feature trivia on American history, and physical challenges. Challenges may vary from a canoe race across the delaware, to hot-dog eating contests. After each two episodes, the contestant with the lowest score is eliminated. The judges will be an ethnically diverse group of Americans.
With all of the outrageous reality Tv shows on air today, such as “Amish Mob”, “Toddlers in Tiaras”, and “Jersey Shore”, a reality Tv show that benefits society is a novel idea. Showing the potential immigrants ruthlessly fighting for a change at a legal life in the U.S. will build a positive image for immigrants. Showing the desperation of immigrants will also make American citizens more grateful. Living in a country with freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and equal economic opportunity is an enormous blessing. This blessing is often overlooked by those citizens who have grown up with such liberty all their lives.
The final benefit of “Who Wants to be Legal?” is entertainment. American society feeds off the reality television industry, with the Kim Kardashian and Snooki as two of the most well-known celebrities. Instead of watching immature party girls and dysfunctional families, why not watch hard-working immigrants battle it out? Marketing this reality show will also pour money into the economy, which is much needed. Instead of placing people who have made sex-tapes and been arrested on the red-carpet, lets place people of substance on that esteemed carpet. It’s a win-win. The United States solves it’s immigration issue, while keeping it’s citizens entertained.
In conclusion, forcing foreigners to wait years for a visa, with the possibility of being denied is cruel. “Who Wants to be Legal?” would solve the immigration issue, instill gratitude in Americans, and entertain the public.
