A Fresh Start

Walking in to the meeting the morning of Thursday May 8th 2014, I was not prepared for the unexpected. "Chris, I would like you to be a supervisor for me." AJ Clemens, my franchise owner, was promoting me from the one of the newbie's to one of the managers for the store. It felt like ages as I stood there in disbelief finally answering, YES!
Taking a step back and looking into my past one can see that I had gone to school for a couple of years to become a Paramedic. I thoroughly enjoyed the adrenaline rush and the joy of helping others, I soon realized that this is not what I was meant to do with my life. After volunteering as an EMT for some time, I decided that it wasn't the best fit for me and started looking elsewhere. I then decided that going to work as an EMT in the hospital would be a better place for me where I could grow and explore different career options. This is where I first had the opportunity to take a small leadership role and to train others. But I never felt that I belonged there. I had spent my life so far just wandering from place to place, without a true reason to commit to something.
Leaving the hospital, my life altered after making the decision for a career change and going to work for the local Chick-Fil-A. I had only taken the job in the first place so that I would have more time to ponder what I wanted to do. Here I found not just a job but a family. As I continued working here I came to the life changing realization that this is where I belong, and that I wanted have my own store someday. As I worked towards making myself a better candidate, I wanted to become a team leader. As a team leader, I could assist the supervisor with leading the shift and have a direct role in training the new employees. Little did I know that the meeting with AJ would help start my dream. All I knew is that one day I would operate my own Chick-Fil-A.

I am here due to my desire to nurture and care for others. It took me nearly forty years to figure it out. I had always been one to put others before myself, the mom that opened her doors to neighborhood children and give them love and hot meals, even when I had little for myself. I didn’t choose to be a nurse, nursing chose me.…

I was very reserved when I first started high school, but after attending a leadership training conference in 2011, my personality, my confidence, and my overall life outlook changed for the better. Ever since, I have returned to that conference each summer as a counselor in order to help others find their voices as well. At around the same time, I began working at the Sweet Spot Bake Shoppe, helping customers, preparing products for sale, taking specialty orders, and assisting in regular tasks. After about three years at the bakery, I headed up to Connecticut for college as an Honors student, undecided in terms of a major. It entailed me taking many classes across multiple departments, getting involved in several clubs, and attending diverse lectures, but after freshman year, I realized my true interests lie in business, specifically management information systems.…

I was helping sick people feel better and doing something worthwhile that came along with the means to help support my family comfortably. There was always a desire in me to opt for a profession in which I could contribute to the society and help the people in need. What better way to do this than to be a paramedic who tirelessly works to aid people in distress. On joining this profession, one must learn to apply theoretical knowledge that to clinical and field situations. One must also learn many procedures and constantly update those skills. No day is a routine day. Every day, the shifts are different, the locations changed and clinical scenarios unique. The work pertains to attending calls such as trauma, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, substance overdose and many other situations and every call teaches some lesson. Apart from providing clinical help, paramedics have to act as efficient organisers and counsellors. Paramedics are often relied upon to control and direct emergency situations, this responsibility and challenging tasks is what draws me to become a practicing paramedic.…

In addition, my employment experience has provided me with great respect for social and ethical views that differ from my own. This position has given me the opportunity to decide if a career in medicine is truly where I would like to be. Working at the hospital has been a truly challenging experience through dealing with the magnitude of death, illness, and recovery. This experience has made me realize that a career in medicine is where I need to be. I have experienced a multitude of emotions and in the end I have realized that the reward of knowing that a life was saved or that through the death of a patient, we have made groundbreaking discoveries in medicine is far greater than the emotional tensity associated with the experience.…

The day may have been rough, but I stuck it out. That realization sparked something within me. I gained faith not only in my skill at the moment, but in my ability to improve. I no longer feared mistakes (which I made plenty of) because I knew within was an opportunity to become stronger. With this came a new confidence in myself. I pushed myself to interact and engage with customers. I asked my managers questions instead of holding back for fear of seeming stupid. I grew to love the chaos of a busy Saturday morning and learned the value of stepping up and taking charge. Before long, these changes made their way into the rest of my life. My fear of asking teachers for help diminished. I felt more at ease when presenting to the class and no longer avoided leading group assignments. What I deemed a mistake at eight o’clock that first morning allowed me to grow and become more like the self-assured people I always envied. I think back to that time many years ago when I swore that customer service was something I would never even consider, and I am so thankful I changed my…

There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

PASSION: Why am I here? As a child I was always attracted to the smaller, weakened animal I found in my yard, i.e. dying birds, kittens, bugs, etc. The animals we owned were never neutered which resulted in a numerous amount of puppies and kittens. I was intrigued by the cycle of life. Originally I wanted to become a veterinarian. The financial strain on my family made it apparent that it would not be possible. As fate would have it, there was a two year waiting list for nursing school, but I was readily accepted into a two year respiratory program. At the end of the respiratory program, I stayed for one more year to specialize in NICU.…

My whole life I have been a leader, the rule maker, the boss, a take charge and a "get stuff done" type of person. These qualities I attribute to being the oldest sibling, raised by a strong mother, and a stepfather determined to raise another man’s child as best he could. I thrive in situations where I can have control and can help guide a team or myself to the best possible outcome. I apply these characteristics to nearly every aspect of my life, sometimes to a fault. After dropping out of college eight years previously, to follow my dreams of being a makeup artist, I woke up one day and decided my life need a change. Not completing school had always weighed on me over the years like an unfinished task needing to be done. So, why now, what changed? My outlook on life shifted after meeting a special little boy named Jackson.…

As a child, I went through a variety of spontaneous dreams and ambitions when it came to who I wanted to be when I grew up. My impulsive, yet frequent change of mind was based on my sole passion to help people, though I never had a true calling until I became a lifeguard. When I was younger, my Poppy died from a drowning accident. He had Parkinson's Disease and had an at home nurse with him at all times. But this never stopped him from doing what he loved to do. One day he wanted to go for a swim in the family pool in the backyard and the nurse decided she had better things to do than do her job. While she was gone, my Poppy slipped losing his balance and began drowning. When the nurse returned back several minutes later there wasn’t much she could do other than start CPR and wait for the paramedics to arrive. In becoming a lifeguard, I knew that I would never want this to happen to anyone else because the pain of losing someone over an accident that could have easily been prevented is unexplainable.…

When I was a young child, I witnessed my sister receiving stitches on her head. We were jumping on my bed when she fell and hit her head on the headboard. I was inspired by the medical professionals who treated her. Although this was a traumatic experience, it helped shape my aspiration to help others. Serving and improving the lives of others is a fundamental duty that I believe should be a part of everyone’s personal mission. Working in healthcare is the path that I discovered as an ideal way to accomplish this goal of service. In particular, I intend to eventually become an anesthesiologist where I will assist patients during medical procedures.…

When I first entered college at Delaware Tech, I was a nursing student. Deep down inside I really did not want to be a nurse; my mom who is a nurse wanted me to follow in her footsteps and be like her. Of course I wanted to make her happy so I entered nursing and school and failed miserably. After that I stopped going to school, so my parents decided to send me to Job Corps. There, I got my CNA license, and worked in VA as a CNA for a few years; I didn’t like that too much either! After this I took a long break from school and just focused on working, I continued to work as a nursing assistant until I decided I had enough of doing something that I did not enjoy doing.…
