Characterization of Buddy in Capote’s “A Christmas Memory” Truman Capote wrote “A Christmas Memory”; the story is based on Capote as a young boy. In the story “A Christmas Memory” Capote refers to himself as Buddy. In the story Buddy lives with many relatives; he is closest to his elderly cousin. Capote characterizes Buddy as caring and maturing through his speech, excitable through his actions, and young; weak; and poor through his appearance. A way Capote characterizes Buddy is through his speech. Buddy’s speech shows that he is a caring person. An example of this would be when he comforts his cousin after she is scolded for giving Buddy a bottle of whiskey as a gift. He tells her not to cry. Young Buddy’s speech can be distinguished from the older Buddy’s speech, due to the very limited vocabulary young Buddy uses in comparison to the older buddy’s. This shows the maturing of Buddy’s speech.
Another characterization Capote makes is Buddy being excitable through his actions. An example of this would be when Buddy and his cousin were finished making fruitcakes they began to sing, giggle, and dance. Another example is on Christmas Eve when Buddy and his elderly cousin barely sleep. Another way it is understood that Buddy is excitable through his actions is that on Christmas morning he tap dances in front of the doors of the adults to wake them. This is also understood when he and his elderly cousin run out side to fly their gift of kites to each other. s A final way Capote characterizes Buddy is through his appearance. Capote describes him as being a seven year-old boy. It is understood that Buddy is weak. One reason being he is merely seven; the other being when lugging the pine tree home(with two people pulling) Buddy and his cousin took many breaks. Buddy’s clothes are said to be hand-me-downs from other family members. Because of his clothes being hand-me-downs it is safe to assume his family is of the lower

This passage is in the beginning of the book and describes what the tattoos on Dick’s body looks like with detail. The kind (and amount) of tattoos he has leads you to believe that he is sort of a rebel and that he will be the antagonist. The sentence is very long and includes many semicolons and hyphens. Capote helps you gain a fuller understanding of the personality, experiences, and history of Dick.…

In the book In Cold Blood, Truman Capote uses a very advanced and detailed writing style to describe his main characters, Dick and Perry, but he also uses this style of writing to paint a picture of the secondary characters in which provides a collage of background and helps accentuate the main characters and the plot in general. One of the secondary characters that really stuck out to me would be Mr. Stoecklein. Truman Capote’s use of dialect and character description helps provide a picture of honesty and also a close relationship with Herb Clutter and more than likely the whole Clutter family.…

He is open to the idea that there is something wrong with him, and cannot forget his crimes. Even Dick remarks on the possibility that something was not right about “Little Perry”, which shows the audience that anyone who knew Perry could see there was probably a mental disorder (108). Then in the second passage, Capote describes Perry’s disastrous home life, and the fact that his mother had “strangled to death on her own vomit”, his sister “jumped out of a window”, and his older brother had “driven his wife to suicide and killed himself the next” (110-111). By including the horrifically colorful ways that Perry’s family perished, Capote incites a feeling of pity from the audience. Like the image of a Dick mercilessly running over a dog, the image of Perry’s family killing themselves appeals emotionally to the audience, and makes them feel sympathetic towards Capote. It is also revealed that Perry lied about being in jail for murdering King and he only told Dick that he had because “he’d wanted Dick’s friendship” (111). Due to the fabrication of events, Dick thought of Perry as a dangerous criminal and enlisted him in the death of the Clutters. While Perry simply tries to make himself liked, Dick takes advantage of this and coerces him into murder. Capote shares this detail to show that while Perry had innocent intentions with Dick, Dick only used Perry for his seemingly heartless murderous tendencies. By…

The character descriptions by Capote are very strong. Almost the entire first half of the book is dedicated to describing the Clutter family and the two killers. By describing in such depth, Capote allows the reader to form some sort of feeling towards the character. For instance, Herb Clutter was described as a good friend, boss, husband, and father. Capote writes, “He was, however, the community’s most widely known citizen, prominent both there and in Garden City and his name was everywhere respectfully recognized among Midwestern agriculturists, as it was in certain Washington offices” (6). He not only does this with Mr. Clutter, but he describes every family member in great detail. Nancy Clutter was widely known throughout Holcomb, and was basically the All-American child. As for Mrs. Clutter, her description was rather important. The fact that she was not mentally…

Well, Buddy was still smiling when a guy who wasn’t even in charge of him scolded him. One of the things he says in the movie is “I just like smiling, smiling’s my favorite!” When watching the movie, people may remember the part when Buddy goes to pick up Michael from school, they run into some snowball throwing bullies. Buddy doesn’t just run away, but helps Michael chase away the bullies. They hide behind a snow mount, and then Buddy pelts all of the bullies with snowballs. Also, when Buddy was at the doctor’s office he was asking a little girl what she wanted for Christmas, and made sure that he would tell…

From the very beginning of the book, Buddy has demonstrated proper morals. Buddy talks to Harold, another boy in his Boy Scout group, despite the fact that the other young boys call him a “dork” (Perotta 4). Buddy is friendly and accepting of Harold, unlike all of the other children (Perotta 20). Later in the story, Buddy is driving out late with his older friends. The group of kids were out very late, past Buddy’s curfew. When asked if he wants to stay out later, Buddy chooses instead to go home. His friends aren’t happy with him, and his reputation was probably damaged, but Buddy knew that going home was the right thing to do. At the end of the book, Buddy is in college. At this point in Buddy’s life, he has not had to deal with the loss of a friend or a family member. Mr. Norman, Buddy’s neighbor, passed away, and his wife, Mrs. Norman, asked Buddy to be a pallbearer in the funeral. At the service, Buddy handles the funeral better than some of the grown men (Perotta 220). In the end, Buddy shows outstanding morals and maturity in almost all…

The story ‘A Christmas Carol’ was written by Charles Dickens in 1843. Dickens was a very popular writer at the time of ‘A Christmas Carol’ is one of his most famous stories today. The main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, is presented as being a very cruel, selfish and harsh man. However, he changes throughout the novella due to significant events. I think the main message Dickens portrayed within the novella was to be loving and generous around Christmas time particularly to those less fortunate. Many people believe this novella has many influences on the way we celebrate Christmas today and some call Dickens ‘the creator of Christmas.’…
