Zak Ebra Jim Speech
While watching the video featuring Zak Ebrahim, he explained what it was like growing up as the son of a terrorist. Ebrahim, elaborated on his day to day activities from shooting guns with his father to being bullied at school. While continuing with the speech, Ebrahim explains how he began to understand that not all people should be hated strictly because of their race or religion. You would think that the audience of the speech would have a hard time listening to Ebrahim, do to his father claiming American lives during acts of terrorism, and the personal bias that may be present itself in the audience. Through the use of effective listening a person may be more open minded to the opinions of others, by switching from set ways of thinking, to relating to the other person’s side of reason. More people listen to respond rather than to understand, identifying the words and context rather than empathizing with them, is the main cause of miscommunication. Since children we have been raised with ideals and opinions that shape our views or outlook`s on society, which can lead to being closed minded. Personally I am a very open minded individual, especially if I have prior knowledge of a subject that interest me. My internal noise of bias or lack of empathy would only encourage me to engage in effective listening in order to confirm my bias of the topic, or to dispel it, and invoke empathy over the issue. Not only is it important to understand why you feel the way you do about a certain subject, but it is equally important to be able to see it from many different points of views in order to confirm or change you own personal opinion, resulting in an informed decision rather than a personal
