Yes Virginia Analysis
Editor for The Sun newspaper, the unknown columnist, in his or her editorial, Yes Virginia, argues the importance and the reality of Santa Claus. The writers purpose is to prove to a eight year old girl that Santa Claus is real. The author adapts a jubilant and protective tone in order to argue to both children and adults that Santa is real.

The first paragraph establishes the idea that Santa Claus is real though others may say that he isn't. Their doubts are because their minds are too rigid and hardened. Through trivializing the other children's claim that Santa isn't real the her, "...little friends are wrong." The word little is often associated in this sense that children are not mature and their opinions small and powerless. Going on to then blame the parents that the reason the children believe in the wrong thing is because, "They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age." The language and audience it is talking about makes it clear that the parents and adults are in the intended audience.

    5. What is the Santa Claus theology? When liberalism started to come around in the twentieth century, theologians of this background started to see God in different aspects and this is how Christian apologetics came about, due to the fact that it cannot cope with the fact of evil. What is the condition of our “continuing in his kindness”? You will be cut off (Rom 11:22). Those who decline to respond to God’s goodness by repentance, and faith, and trust, and submission to his will, cannot wonder or complain if sooner or later he…

Tobolowsky’s article echoes thoughts and feelings about Santa, fears about life, and general doubts that are common to almost every child at some point in his or her life. Stephen describes childhood events and his own propensity toward fear and doubt in a frank and humorous manner that reminds me of Ralphie’s narration in A Christmas Story. Underneath the humor, however, there exists the real torment of doubt and fear that Stephen experiences, fear of the dark, fear of strange noises at night, fear of monsters living in his bedroom. While these fears simply frustrate his well-intentioned parents, they drive Stephen to create remedies of his own to allay his fears. However,…

“Our Christmas tree was never even an inch under eight feet, and it took the whole family hours to decorate it. Each year one of us was honored by being allowed to place the angel at the top of the tree, while Father help us up in his strong arms.” (Pelzer 22). This passage is a simile because this is how we are in Christmas, our tree would be long and it takes us a whole hour to decorate it. We are allowed to place the star on top of the tree, and that is what’s amazing about it. This brought my attention and interested me because it showed how good the mother was to her children and hoe kind she treated them, because the name of the chapter called Good Times. It also shows that the kid remember how good she was and then how she turned…

They say honesty is the best policy. But when it comes to Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, are we being dishonest with our children or just telling those stories. In the essays, “Santa Claus Isn’t Coming to Town” written by Allison and “Truth and the Santa Claus Moment,” written by Corey Harbaugh, the writers discuss the values of honesty and the moments we choose to believe in.…

All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…

At the beginning of this section, Stuever talks mainly about the artificial side of Christmas, about how everything can be “better”, which is talked about repeatedly on page 306. “They suggest the lakeside lights… villages and quain sounding burgs in Minnesota and Vermont.(306)” “... people waiting in line to see one Santa tell me about Santas who are better (more beloved)... People point me to “better” people, too, by which they mean people having nobler, more storybook Noels…(306)” All around him there is unhappiness or dissatisfaction with what people currently have. He can find nothing else except people seeking for something “better” to fill their shallow hearts, and when that isn't enough, they move on again. Then, Stuever drops one tiny little bomb meant to touch our hearts on what Christmas is really about: the children.…

Dillard uses an obvious statement at the beginning of the piece to ingrain the idea that Santa is a comparison to God, to the reader. “Like everyone in his right mind, I feared Santa Claus, thinking he was God.” This sets the thought process for the rest of the excerpt and clearly states what the author wants you think. She uses hidden statements as well to acknowledge that Santa is God by describing his divine qualities and adapting them on to Santa. “…but had barely tested the possibility of shaping my own behavior, and then only from fear, and yet not from love.”…

A “Christmas Carol” is an engaging social commentary written in the form of a novella, which outlines the plight of the poor, with the intention of altering the views of the wealthy, in Victorian London society. Dickens himself was a victim of the Poor Laws which were a by-product of the industrial Revolution, and wrote this novella with the hope of making life more bearable for the poor. Dickens uses the appealing nature of his descriptive novella, in order to subtly promote a change of attitude from his reluctant wealthy contemporaries.…

Children are told white lies by their parents not to harm them but to protect their innocence. For instance, one of the all time favorite white lie is Santa Claus followed by the tooth fairy and Easter bunny. All of these characters help preserve their innocence and lets them just be kids. Santa Claus works in favor of the parents for the most part, children have to behave in order to receive a present if not they receive coal. When a child becomes aware that there is no Santa Clause it is time to tell them the truth. It is crucial that it is explained in a positive way so that the child does not feel betrayed. The belief of Santa Claus is most often the last frontier of their innocence, and to deny them that would be robbing them of their childhood. Another example, is when a child realizes or becomes aware of financial struggle in the family, it is the duty of the parent to reassure their child that everything is fine. Even though, it is a lie but it is being said to protect a child from worrying. A child does not need to worry whether the parent is going to have money to buy food or pay the rent.…

A young mother or a young father might tell a story to their children about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy. Mothers and Fathers tell and read these stories to their children all of the time just like their mothers and fathers and their mothers and fathers. These are stories, told each year giving a child hopes and dreams. Is it a lie? I do not think so, because when a child comes to an age and figures out there is only a story of a Santa Claus, a Saint Nick, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, it is time for them to understand these are stories carried by traditions year after year. Explain to the child, yes from traditions long ago, there was a Santa Claus, an Easter Bunny and a tooth fairy. Does a child feel hurt, and think his parents lied to him? No, as it is very important to explain the responsibilities of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny and how these traditions have been honored and celebrated for many years.…
