White Lies
In the short story Salvation by Langston Hughes, he is deceived by his aunt the rest of the community in regards to Jesus and his existence. While many parents would say that they always want their children to be honest, they often themselves lie unintentionally. There is a difference in lying to children and telling a white lie. When someone lies they are knowingly providing false information for the purpose of deception. On the other hand white lies are untruthful statements that are not meant to harm, instead they are positive. White lies serve as to avoid hurting the feelings of the listener and to avoid negative reactions from the listener to the speaker if the truth is told. Much of today’s parenting revolves around white lies. Parenting consists of telling white lies to help protect a child’s innocence, promote creativity and teach them important social skills. Children are told white lies by their parents not to harm them but to protect their innocence. For instance, one of the all time favorite white lie is Santa Claus followed by the tooth fairy and Easter bunny. All of these characters help preserve their innocence and lets them just be kids. Santa Claus works in favor of the parents for the most part, children have to behave in order to receive a present if not they receive coal. When a child becomes aware that there is no Santa Clause it is time to tell them the truth. It is crucial that it is explained in a positive way so that the child does not feel betrayed. The belief of Santa Claus is most often the last frontier of their innocence, and to deny them that would be robbing them of their childhood. Another example, is when a child realizes or becomes aware of financial struggle in the family, it is the duty of the parent to reassure their child that everything is fine. Even though, it is a lie but it is being said to protect a child from worrying. A child does not need to worry whether the parent is going to have money to buy food or pay the rent.

I believe in some causes it is morally permissible to lie, but in only if no one is in danger or if telling a lie could prevent harm to someone. At Christmas time we had an angel tree for the youth of our church, my aunt happened to pull my sons name he is 12 years old. My Aunt bought him a batman watch, hat, and gloves. My son feels he is to mature for these types of gifts, she asked him did he like it he told her yes to spare hurting her feelings. I wanted to tell him it’s not okay to lie but my aunt is very sensitive so I told him that I understood why he lied. I feel like in this circumstance it was okay to lie it was just not worth hurting her feelings. I told him he would have to wear his gifts to church every now and then and he agreed.…

The dictionary defines a lie as, “a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.” However, while the intent of a lie is to deceive, that deceit is not always intended to cause detriment to others. Lies can be told for justifiable reasons such as to protect the feelings of others, but more often lies are told for the wrong reasons. For example, lies are mostly told to avoid the consequences of one’s actions such as with criminal activities and academic misconduct. When comparing acceptable and unacceptable reasons to lie, the unacceptable reasons greatly outnumber the acceptable.…

Facades are basically changing your personality while ignoring the plain facts, as the title implies, is a false action done with the intent to deceive. Deflecting is not answering the question at all; it is being up-front about comfortable issues and not revealing the couple of very important issues that changes everything.…

First is “the white lie,” which is basically telling a harmless lie instead of the truth, if the truth is destructive. She writes, “Telling a friend he looks great when he looks like hell can be based in a decision that the friends needs a compliment more than a frank opinion” (165). Furthermore, she explains that it is the liar deciding when is best to say the lie, because it is an act of subtle arrogance for anyone to decide what is best for someone else. Like she tells about the incident of an American sergeant during the Vietnam conflict who knew one of his men was killed in action, but listed him as missing so that the man’s family would receive indefinite compensation instead of a small pittance the military gives widows and children (166).…

Fiction is prohibited (poetry and lit) to aid in protection from untruth at early age until they are able to evaluate the truth for themselves. There is also a suggestion of a transcendent God and no possible forms of corruption should be overlooked.
