Yaswinnette Case Study Summary
A concept that appeared in both interviews was responsibilities. Yaswantie worked to support her family, she volunteered at her church, and worked full time. Similarly, to her sister, Basmatie had to support her husband, while running her own business. Despite the responsibilities that these women have, they both decided to attend college. Additionally, both interviewees discussed money and how it affected their lives. The cost of tuition was a factor that caused both sisters to make adjustments to the way they lived. Yaswanite had to learn to save money and not buy unnecessary items. On the other hand, when Basmatie’s husband became sick, she had to stop attending college because she could no longer afford tuition for nursing school. Instead of attending nursing school, she decided to open her own cabin cleaning business to support herself and her husband. One difference between the two interviewees was why they decided to attend college. Yaswanite’s decision to attend college was the promised salary raise from her boss once she obtained her degree. The concept of academic performance was present in both interviews. Yaswantie was motivated to get good grades because she had to act as a role model for her children. She didn’t want to get bad grades after telling her children that she expected them to get good grades in school. In contrast, Basmatie always aimed for an A when she was taking college courses. Despite the numerous responsibilities these women had, they were still determined to get good grades in the college courses that they were taking. Younger college students can learn about motivation from these two women.
