Business Ethics Reflection People face ethical dilemmas nearly every day in their personal or professional lives. “You can be fairly certain that during the course of your career, you’ll run into myriad ethical problems such as a customer who asks for a special deal or terms in order to make the sale, or questions about the appropriate use of corporate resources, or discrimination of one sort or another” (Trevino, & Nelson, (2007), p. 111). Choosing how to deal with ethical or moral dilemmas can be very difficult at times. Sometimes it involves a family member or personal friend. Other times it may involve a co-worker or a manager. He was working for a used car dealership and eventually was promoted to a management position. When he became the manager, he was given credit cards to purchase gas for the cars on the lot that needed to be sold. My sister and her husband both used the credit cards for their personal vehicles daily, and when they took trips. Sometimes my sister would fill someone’s vehicle with gas when they helped her do things, such as helping them move into their new home. I knew that this was wrong and it bothered me, but I never reported it. If I had turned them in to the car company, many of my family members would have been upset with …show more content…

Also the company had a policy that family members could not work for another family member, but they could work for the same company at a different location. My son’s wife was also hired at this same location, as well as my sister. Many rules were broken by my sister’s husband, and they resulted in him making more money and getting honors such as salesman of the year. After the company found out about all the schemes my sister’s husband had been doing, he was fired. She told us "NO" she stated that we "got what we asked for." Her voice tone was very snappy, and she kept cutting us off before we could fully explain why we wanted a refund. In an attempt to not hold up the drive thru, we went in. She was very UNPROFESSIONAL. She literally screamed at us and stated at the top of her lungs "if you go to a restaurant and do not like your order you cannot just return it because you don’t like it!!" I nicely replied, "Yes you can, being a picky eater, I've done it several times." At this point she waves her hand in my husband's face and yelled "Whatever." At this time I was outraged, but I kept my composure because the stored contained many children. My husband finally asked her for her boss’s name. At this time she stormed to the register, got our money and she got a piece of receipt paper out. She wrote down these names "Teresa, Regina, Cole” she also wrote down the phone #. She slammed the money and the paper down on the counter, while giving us a deep sigh and rolling her eyes. My husband assured her that we would be calling back and she, for the second time waved her hands in the air and yelled “Whatever.” We have called several times…

Webster’s Dictionary defines ethics as “a set of moral principles: a theory or system of moral values.” (Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, 2011). Every person has ethics that he or she lives by, but sometimes in the business world many unethical business transactions occur. People do not realize that sometimes the statistics that he or she are fed have been falsified in order to get him or her to purchase a product or lure him or her in to participate in via false promises.…

Upon retirement from the USAF and a short term of employment at Sandia National Laboratories, I was hired to manage a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) company. I was not very familiar with HVAC systems, but as a home owner I knew enough about them that I was comfortable in that type of environment. The owner of the company seldom communicated with the HVAC technicians because he wanted them out of the shop and either on their way to the job site or at the job site no later than 8:00 a.m. The company had seven HVAC technicians, an accountant and me, the company manager. A few of…

There was a significant difference in power and authority; ownership of the jewelry store and all assets belong to Sean, and he had invested his entire savings into the organization. It seemed he was solely concerned with profit and I was concerned with diminishing the relations I had built at the workplace. As manager, I was also concerned with sales, and profit, but to be honest I was more concerned with whether my actions and behaviors were justifiable. I continued to ask myself if I was behaving in an ethical manner. Would I be the underlying reason for my employee’s financial bind once he was laid off because I knew he would soon be unemployed and I kept this information from him to satisfy my boss. Withholding this information from my employees went against my personal values, which include dignity, empathy, compassion, accountability, loyalty, and integrity (to name a few). I am an honest individual, and I cannot willingly withhold information that could ultimately terminate a friendship and cause severe damage to the success and happiness of my employee’s professional life as well as their personal lives.…

Ethical issues that were raised by the Hewlett-Packard (HP) are Board of Directors member’s usage of pretexting during an investigation of information leaks. Pretexting is a deceptive practice by which one individual pretends to be someone else in order to gain anonymous access to information or an individual. Hewlett-Packard was facing multiple problems during the year 2000-2006. One of these problems was that at least one board member was leaking confidential information to the press. This information was not only putting the company's reputation at risk, but it was also putting the company's financial stability at risk by creating lower trade values for their stock. HP Board of Directors hired a private investigator in order to determine who was leaking information to the press. The issue of the legality of the use of pretexting by HP was eventually ruled to be a non-issue, meaning that it was not illegal. However, this does not mean that the use of pretexting by HP was a good business decision. This activity did have negative impact for the many members of the board, e.g. many resigned and had their professional reputations tarnished.…
