1. Strategic Role

The organisation chosen for the purpose of this project is Pret a Manger a business organisation that has shops in the U.S, U.K, and Hong Kong. Pret specialises in healthy and fresh food. The organisation has a comprehensive mission statement. It takes the organisation’s inimitable and permanent reason for being, and it shows the way in which the organisation is about.

1.1 WWF’s Mission Statement

‘Pret creates hand made, natural food, avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the ‘prepare’ and ‘fast’ food on the market today.’ 1.1.1 Objectives

* ‘Conserving critical places and critical species that are particularly important for their habitat or for people. * Ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable * Promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.’

1.1.2 Goals

* ‘Raise public awareness on climate change. * Reduce deforestation in Madagascar, at least where WWF is working, by promoting and encouraging alternatives to slash and burn agriculture. * Create new protected areas (PAs) where WWF is working * Help local communities to sustainably manage the forest through transfers of natural resources management

    In 1868, laws against the burning of forest and forest settlement were enacted (Raik, 2007), however this made little difference when up against the needs of an ever growing human population. There was little more change made before March 2010 when Rosewood exportation was prohibited, although this was only made due to international pressures that had arisen from the administration legalising export the previous December (Barrett et al., 2010). Even with the restrictions, criminal exportation still occurs. From April 2009 to May 2010, nearly 164,000 rosewood logs have been exported from Madagascar, valued at more than $227.4 million (Barrett et al., 2010). However even with such a lucrative market for the wood, a malagasy labourer may only earn $0.49 for each log reaped (Barrett et al., 2010) thus not only does the logging cause a deficit in the forest conservation, but has also lead to a crumbling economy. If Madagascar were to focus less on exporting goods and more on a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) program, the potential revenue would range from $72 to $144 million in one year alone (Barrett et al., 2010).     Firstly, forests would restore quicker with the prolonged absence of fires. Therefore, landowners are encouraged to avoid fire as a land management tool to clear patches of forests for agricultural purposes (Uhl et al. 1988, Nepstad et al. 1991, Jipp et al. 1998). Secondly, certification schemes could be used to encourage responsible forest management and reassure consumers of agricultural goods that they are buying responsibly produced products. The Registry of Socioenvironmental Responsibility (Cadastro de Compromisso Socioambiental – CCS) launched in Brazil guarantees consumers are getting products from well managed sources. Thirdly, timber should be managed in a way that is sustainable. Measures suggested to reduce negative impact of logging in the forests are, pre-harvest cutting of lianas, mapping of skidder trails and directional felling (Holmes et al. 2002, Barreto et al. 1998). This should be good for companies involved in timber because there will be fewer fires and hence more timber to be harvested. Lastly, some regional government planning of forest reserves to reduce impacts of transportation projects such as roads and highways being built in agricultural frontiers has met with wide political support (Campos and Nepstad 2006).
