Some people can’t communicate properly. Some never will. The only people that understand them are the people that struggle with the same things they do. People with communication disorders must become part of a discourse community to be able to achieve their ultimate goal of being able to communicate with everyone. In order for these people to achieve their goal, they need others that are interested in helping them that understand their disorder. For someone interested in communication disorders, it is not only to important to recognize the four main discourse communities as speech, language, hearing, and processing, but also the differences between them and the smaller discourse communities within.…

When someone hears the phrase “Rhetoric & Writing,” one might think of speech, as well as the different forms of the written word, such as fiction, autobiography, poetry, etc., but persuasion is, from my point of view, the backdrop of Rhetoric and Writing (Harmon, 411). We, as authors, or even interdisciplinarians, must present our ideas to the world that seduces them to vacate their identity for a short period of time.…

According to French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, a habitus is referring to a person’s way of thinking, acting, and behaving. A habitus is a structure that helps a person comprehend and deal with society. It can be simply seen as a merger of society and the individual. (Wysocka, Paulina, 2013). Habitus is both a “structured structure”—the effect of the actions of, and our interactions with, others—and a “structuring structure”—it suggests and constrains our future actions (Bourdieu, 1992). In other words, habitus is both the “embodiment of our social location” (i.e., class, ethnicity, race, sexuality, gender, generation, and nationality) (Noble & Watkins, 2003) and “the structure of social relations that generate and give significance to individual likes (or taste) and dislikes with regard to practice and action” (Laberge, 1995). Critically, the habitus is embodied, that is, “located within the body and affects every aspect of human embodiment” (Shilling, 1993). Theorists believe that stereotypes, narratives, ideologies and discourses all attribute to the shaping on the individual habitus. In this essay I will discuss and argue how each concept works according to various theorists and how they work in shaping the individual habitus.…

The way a person communicates whether it is by vocal speech or various written forms depends heavily on how they developed their literacy which is unique per person. The article Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics by James Paul Gee goes through different theories he has on the correct and incorrect ways that language is used when communicating during different scenarios and why. The main cause of unique levels regarding literacy are the different Discourses a person may have.…

    3. Miss Pope’s permanent accoutrements were a white Saab 96, from which she would wave cheerily whilst driving around the market square, and a rather anti-social dog, a rare breed of Shetland collie called Sheena. Just as Shetland ponies look stunted, so do Shetland collies. Sheena consisted of long, thick, orangey fur on very short legs: imagine Lassie crossed with Dougal from The Magic Roundabout. We adored her because she looked arrested in permanent puppyhood, but she was completely indifferent to us. She would retreat to her kennel as the first child arrived for school and only re-emerge at 3.30. It was a marvel to me that such an affectionate woman could live with such an aloof dog, and yet they were inseparable, an item. I’m convinced that “Miss Pope and Sheena” were painted almost as often in that school as the Madonna and Child were in Renaissance Europe.…
