Word Study on "Light"

"Light" John 12:35 The English language is a funny thing. Words sound like other words and some words have numerous meanings, while some have only one. In the gospel of John, the word light comes up more than enough times to bring it to one's attention. Not only does the word show up a lot in the gospel of John, but it displays different meanings at different times. In chapter one verse four (1:4) it shows the meaning of light as the spirit and life of people. "In him was life, and the life was the light of all people." In this verse the word light takes on the soul being of a human and life itself, but in chapter one verse five, (1:5) the word light means the opposite of dark. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." This verse is speaking of God's creation of day and night. In other parts of the gospel of John he speaks of the light as God himself. In chapter one verses seven and nine, and chapter three verse nineteen, you can see how the word light is used to describe God. "He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him." "The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world." "And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil." In chapter three verse nineteen, it takes more of a deeper meaning than just saying that light is God, but that light stands for good, and darkness stands for evil. In John 12:35, the word light takes on more than one meaning, a physical meaning and a literal meaning. It says "Jesus said to them, "The light will be among you only a little while. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overcome you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where he is going.'" At the begining he says "light will be among you only a little while," the word light is referring to life. In the next sentence it takes

“Not only is John 's gospel written for evangelism, it seems to be written particularly for Jewish evangelism. From the beginning, the book of John is geared to Jewish thinking. John 1:1 sounds very much like the beginning of Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Scriptures Taken with the Genesis account that Elohim (God) created the heavens and the earth, the gospel of John reinforces the idea of Messiah as the Creator Himself. Genesis 1:26 records Elohim as saying, "Let Us make man in Our image.…" The Hebrew Elohim is a plural noun. It embodies a sense of composite unity which, seen in the context of the gospel accounts, relates to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit working…

The most prominent theme of the novel highlights war. Doerr’s work of fiction uses physical symbols to showcase the effects of war on people, of resistance to oppression, and the effort of citizens trying to maintain normality, creating a whole better understanding for readers about the outcomes of war. Historians, philosophers, and writers alike can attest to the human struggle to follow a certain moral code; history shows a constant rift between what humans claim they should do and what they actually do. If this rift did not exist, many a crisis and war could be averted, but humanity would not be its beautifully flawed self. In the novel All the Light We Cannot See, Doerr is raved over for “masterfully and knowledgeably recreating the deprived civilian conditions of war-torn France and the strictly controlled lives of the military occupiers” (Hooper 23). However, the use of literary devices in the novel reflects a message deeper than that of just another war-time story. Doerr utilizes the war setting as a means of further exploring the nature of humanity in a distinct context. He does not define the characters by war; he defines the characters and gives them a war to respond…

John 8:12 says, When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." If you believe in God, and follow what His plans are for you, He will only give you things to help you and make you prosperous, never things to harm you. John 14:6 says “ I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to my Father, except through me.” Basically, if you want to have eternal life there is no other way to do so unless you have faith in God, and believe His Word. If a man does not believe in God, and doesn’t follow in His ways, he makes up his own rules, his own ideas of how life should be lived and sets up his own failures. The main reason we were created was to fellowship with God, and worship Him. When man doesn’t have a relationship with God, he feels an emptiness and is dissatisfied. He can not be truly content with his life unless he has the Holy Spirit working in him. To be saved by God, you have to accept that God is who He says He is and accept Him as your savior, then you have to repent and confess your sins to God. God is very forgiving, and He says if you confess all your sins to Him he will forgive you. After you do all that, you are born again, and have started your relationship with God. In the book Praxis they say that “The new life God brings about is truly an amazing act of His graciousness and…

Light is apart from time, space, and matter, yet it fills the voids of our existence and sustains all life. Light has no mass, no distance, and is constant in time and presence. Christ is the "Light of the World". This idea had remained the same throughout the time period and was supported in the fields of science which left this idea to go unchanged. Many scientific reformers such as Isaac Newton, and Nicolaus Copernicus had said that God was the source of their knowledge and the reason for their…

" This word was eternal and powerful just as God was and is. John slowly builds on the reader's understanding of who and what this word is. Not leaving the readers in suspense long, the author then point blank states: "the word was God." From a Jewish background where Monotheist was pushed, perhaps this was a very puzzling statement. Throughout the second verse, John keeps dropping hints on the magnitude of this "word."…

John gives us three signs. The first sign is that the soul, neither finds pleasure in the things of God nor in the things of this world. The purpose of the dark night is to cleanse our soul from all attachment so that it may cling to God alone. This first sign shows the beginner that it is not due to sin that he is entering into a period of aridity. The second sign that St. John gives us is that the soul is so concerned with God that because of this period of aridity he thinks that he is either not serving God and is decreasing in spirituality. This sign shows that the soul is not backpedaling due to a failure on its own part, but it is actually an invitation from God to draw deeper into the spiritual life. The third step of the dark night of the senses is that the soul can no longer mediate in the imaginative sphere. In this step the beginner must realize that God no longer desires to communicate himself through the senses but through pure spirit. Only through spiritual contemplation can the soul now communicate with God. This sign also serves as proof that the soul is beginning to purge its desire for sensual…

See the difference?? In the world view truth is whatever you want it to be, but to us Christians Truth as it clearly states is God. Now that would confuse anyone by just looking at it, but Jesus wouldn’t have said this if it meant nothing. Our society is so wrapped up in the fact of “I am a free person I can do what I want” and people are too afraid to think what might actually be out there that is bigger then us. This is scary because we are no longer in control and we tend to love being in control.…

So after my renewal from the very section, I’m caught up in the teaching from Jesus that teaches how distinct His followers should be on a daily basis. Salt is found in almost anything. This comparison sticks out to me because it doesn't just say, “Go be in the stuff that is good” but it commands us to be in all of the world and be distinct enough that people know who we represent. The comparison to light is even more distinct to me because of the distinct nature of light and darkness, the absence of light. Darkness isn't something different in its own, but it is simply the absence of light. This shows the importance of the comparison to me because of the necessity of light throughout the world and what happens when light is…
